Is Texas Gov Perry a Mover-Shaker? :: "Texans say NO!"

Texas poll: Obama 47, Perry 45 « Hot Air: "Only 33% of voters in the state think he should make a bid for the White House compared to 59% opposed to him running. More surprising than that? Perry actually trails Barack Obama 47-45 in a hypothetical match up in the state.

Perry’s trailing Obama certainly has nothing to do with the President being popular. Only 42% of voters in the state like the job he’s doing to 55% who rate him poorly. Texas is a Republican state to begin with him and Obama has a lot more Democrats (14%) who disapprove of him than GOP voters who approve (6%) and beyond that he’s on negative ground with independents at 46/47.

Perry, however, is almost as unpopular. Only 43% of voters approve of him with 52% giving him bad marks. Most striking in Perry’s numbers is a horrible 33/62 standing with independents. He also has 21% of Republicans disapproving of him while only 12% of Democrats cross over to give him good marks. Perry may prove to be a strong Presidential candidate but his numbers in Texas are nothing to write home about."

Political Parties :: MooPig's Report from the Center

EXCERPT  |  " ... Former Congressman Vin Weber joins us here at the Aspen Ideas Festival, along with Democratic consultant Anna Greenberg in Washington, D.C., to talk about just who is the political base of the political parties as we go into 2012. (NPR. June 29, 2011. LINK) ... "
... REPUBLICANS ...
CONAN: And Michele Bachmann says she wants a constitutional amendment to define marriage as one man and one woman, yeah. Vin, is the Tea Party the base of the Republican Party?

WEBER: It's a big part of the base. I mean, the base of the Republican Party has traditionally, I would say, been small-business people who are primarily economically motivated and anti-tax folks, and that part of the base has grown substantially into what we now call the Tea Party.

People are motivated by fiscal issues growing out of the spending of the last couple years, really motivated by the TARP bill, which was a Bush administration initiative, and then by the stimulus package in the Obama administration.

I like to point out to people in about a six-month period of time, between fall of 2008 and March of 2009, the Congress spent almost $2 trillion or a trillion and a half dollars, and that's kind of scared people and gave rise to the Tea Party.

But there still is also a substantial social conservative base, which has been growing in the party basically since the 1970s, when Evangelical conservatives in the South, particularly, as well as some conservative Catholics and others in the North, switched their allegiance from the Democratic to the Republican Party.

... DEMOCRATS ...
CONAN: And Anna, we talked about the LGBT community as part of the Democratic base. You think of the rest, a big part of the rest of it as labor.

GREENBERG: Labor for sure, but I think that the Democratic base is more diverse than the Republican base and in some ways as many challenges as the Republican base faces around Tea Party versus more moderate folks and what that means for their ability to either get elected nationally or deal with an agenda in Congress, I think Democrats have some of the same issues. So in addition to LGBT and labor, you have African-Americans, Latino voters, younger people, though they look a little shaky relative to where they were in 2006 and 2008, but also very well-educated voters, people with post-graduate education, very Democratic, especially women, so very well-educated women and also single women.

So Democratic base is actually really, really diverse. I want to make one point on the Tea Party, just to follow up on Vin's point. There's no doubt that a lot of sentiment that the Tea Party reflects or represents reflects a lot of what the Republican base is about, but it isn't just an organic, bottom-up, small-business reaction to big spending.

It's actually initially organized around cap-and-trade vote and funded by the Koch brothers, and it's not as organic as I think the press makes it out to be or they would represent themselves to be. (LINK)

MooPig's Budget Speak :: "House Approves Paul Ryan’s 2012 Spending Bill Cutting $6 Trillion"

[PHOTO :: Paul Ryan, Who Supported Auto Bailout And TARP, Says Government Shouldn’t Pick Winners; [LINK])

GOVERNMENT
HOUSE APPROVES PAUL RYAN’S 2012 SPENDING BILL CUTTING $6 TRILLION
Posted on April 15, 2011

In April 2011 The US Congress voted in a "blueprint" that basically promises to take out the garbage. We all have moments in our days when we like to go through the pile of mail on our dining table, tear up the junk mail and file the important stuff... eh?

Is this what the Ryan Bill promises? Unfortunately, articles about it are not very detailed. What garbage are we proposing to take to the curb?

For instance:
House Approves Paul Ryan’s ...(Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI))... 2012 Spending Bill Cutting $6 Trillion | Breaking news and opinion on The Blaze: "Under the House Republican plan, deficits requiring the federal government to borrow more than 40 cents for every dollar it spends would be cut by the end of the decade to 8 cents of borrowing for every dollar spent."
... proposing to fundamentally overhaul Medicare and combat out-of-control budget deficits with sharp spending cuts on social safety net programs like food stamps and Medicaid. (April 15, 2011. Jonathon M. Seidl. [LINK])
If it were your household budget would you borrow forty cents for every dollar you spend? Carrying around debt is a depressing thing. Would you buy a back-up generator for your house for four hundred dollars, and put forty percent of that on a credit card? What about credit card fees, interest, and late charges?

Following in time, order and\or place ... does this mean today we should save forty cents of every dollar we earn ... ?

You, see, the government is daft. It spends more than it has available ... and pays all those debt service charges as well... into a mounting, stinking pile of seething debt. Take out the garbage?
The nonbinding plan (Ryan's Bill) lays out a fiscal vision cutting $6.2 trillion over the coming decade from the budget submitted by President Barack Obama. It passed 235-193 with every Democrat voting “no.” (ibid.)
President Obama reportedly said: “It’s one that says that America can no longer do some of the big things that made us great, that made us the envy of the world,” ... .

This is the 'garbage" that Ryan's Bill will take out: " ... It calls for tax reform that would lower the top income tax rates for corporations and individuals by cleaning out a tax code cluttered with tax breaks and preferences ..."

That's right; clean out the "tax breaks and preferences" -- but is that an answer me and you understand? Apparently it is important to Congress People. They depend on those entities "top income earners, and corporations" to get elected.

Like my Daddy always says: "The first rule of politics is to 'get elected.'" That takes money. So to help corporations is to foist up the stipends for Ryan and others?

So, that bit of knowledge does little to help us with our household budgets. Unless, of course, corporations pass on their savings to the consumers -- you and me. That would be nice, but unlikely.
“The Republican plan is not bold. It‘s just the same old tired formula we’ve seen before of providing big tax breaks to the very wealthy and powerful special interests at the expense of the rest of America,” said top Budget panel Democrat Chris Van Hollen of Maryland. “Except this time it’s dressed up with a lot of sweet-smelling talk of reform.”
Ryan's blueprint presents an " ... ending [to] Medicare’s guarantee as we know it – has launched a major-league Washington imbroglio..." says the article.
Imbroglio: Definition of IMBROGLIO ... a confused mass ... an intricate or complicated situation (as in a drama or novel) ... an acutely painful or embarrassing misunderstanding ... a violently confused or bitterly complicated altercation : embroilment. ([LINK])
So, have we cleared our dining room table of unwanted junk mail, and taken out the garbage?

As one reads deeper in the article one finds real issues are about how this budget summary by Paul Ryan and others skirts around "government pay outs" like Social Security, and Medicare.

We think the President is on deck in the bottom of the ninth, and he thinks he is going to hit the game winning homerun; when in fact he should just go for a sure-thing single. He would depend then on subsequent batters to bat him around the bases. Eh?

NEXT WEEK: MooPig ventures out to the nearest Medicare Office to see what we dig up about that.

MooPig's Flood Gauge Fusion :: "What do YOU see?"

[Artwork by Desiree Darnell]
If you see anything you might try the Online Rorschach Test:
Rorschach Test Theory
[LINK]  |  Retrieved by Pat Darnell  |  June 23, 2011  |  Bryan TX
The most widely used method in the United States is based on the work of John E. Exner. In the Exner system, responses are scored with reference to their level of vagueness or synthesis of multiple images in the blot, the location of the response, which of a variety of determinants is used to produce the response (i.e., what makes the inkblot look like what it is said to resemble), the form quality of the response (to what extent a response is faithful to how the actual inkblot looks), the contents of the response (what the respondent actually sees in the blot), the degree of mental organizing activity that is involved in producing the response, and any illogical, incongruous, or incoherent aspects of responses.

Using the scores for these categories, the examiner then performs a series of mathematical calculations producing a structural summary of the test data. The results of the structural summary are interpreted using existing empirical research data on personality characteristics that have been demonstrated to be associated with different kinds of responses. Both the calculations of scores and the interpretation are often done electronically.

We, on the other hand, dispense with all that technical and pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumo, and simply give you some random answers. Many people claim that these are every bit as good as the "real" Rorschach answers determined by some highly paid, fancy-pants clinician or psychologist with an actual degree.

What it means to think like a postmodernist :: Bill Gaines

Above: a 1963 photo of Bill Gaines entering the MAD offices. Poking their heads out of the door are (from top to bottom): Nick Meglin, John Putnam, Al Feldstein, Leonard Brenner, Nelson Tirado, and Jerry De Fuccio.

MooPig's Favorite Post-Modernist is Bill Gaines
by Pat Darnell | June 16, 2011 | Bryan TX

What it means to think like a postmodernist - National cognitive science | Examiner.com: "Godel’s incompleteness theorem)."

1952

Bill Gaines knew that the man who would edit MAD had to have a brilliant sense of humor as well as a groundbreaking visual sense. He had to be a man who could see through the phoniness of popular culture. And he had to be a man who could take a little 10-cent comic book and transform it into the premiere satirical force of the 20th century.

Unfortunately, that man was busy, so Gaines hired Harvey Kurtzman.

Also, in 1952...

The second issue of MAD goes on sale on December 9, 1952. On December 11, the first-ever letter complaining that MAD "just isn't as funny and original like it used to be" arrives.

1954

The storybook marriage of baseball legend Joe DiMaggio and tinseltown bombshell Marilyn Monroe soon goes sour due to MAD's corrosive influence. Joe becomes enraged as he watches Marilyn film a movie scene standing over a subway grating, her dress flying high in the breeze. Insiders assume DiMaggio is outraged because hundreds of drooling onlookers are ogling his wife's exposed thighs and buttocks. But what REALLY infuriates the Yankee Clipper is that his wife would debase herself in public by reading MAD.

July 1955

MAD Magazine is born (#24). Gaines and Kurtzman turn MAD into a bi-monthly, black-and-white magazine. More importantly, they get to raise the price from 10-cents to a quarter! Although it will be another year before he's named and adopted as MAD's official mascot, Alfred E. Neuman makes his first appearance on the border of MAD (#24) as the "What, Me Worry" Kid

Also, in 1955...

Not all the legal news is good for Bill Gaines and MAD. Without video games or rap music to pick on, Congress is forced to hold hearings on the dangers of comic books. This poses a direct threat to Gaines' varied line of titles: Tales from the Crypt, Crypt of Terror, The Terrible Crypt, The Terrorizingly Terrible Crypt Tales, and MAD. Gaines volunteers to testify before a Senate committee. It does not go well:

Also in 1955, MooPig's Founder, Pat Darnell, is Born in Ft Worth, TX ... June 4th .... during a tornadic thunderstorm.

One Tentacle alone does not a Squid make :: PART TWO

This is an unexpected continuation of that blog post from Sunday, February 22, 2009 :: "One Tentacle alone does not a Squid make"
by Pat Darnell  |  June 19, 2011  |  Bryan TX  |  [LINK]

A Quick Review:

EXCERPTS |  " ... Either by rational accident or by irrational accidents while someone is reading the phone book, I think maybe every sort of civilization has had its way with the American Continents, and all of those constituents have screwed up miserably.
" ...Truth is that we are afraid of sea monsters. If we find a giant squid, we want to cut off all but one of its tentacles. Because each group coming here is like a squid with one tentacle: it has been a weak argument for survival. What does that mean? the groups who are here are cut off from their homes, cultures, and siblings. Families follow traditions that they just plain fantasize is something they do in their old country's. Fact is that no second generation American has any idea what their parents' hell is all about. Mexican, Italian, Blacks, Polish, Ukrainian, Swedes, all have the same rates of cultural obsolescence and replicate fade, once the children hurry as far away, from their home towns, as possible.
" ... Someone has made discovery of a theory that Chinese landed on the west coast of North America 71 or so years before Columbus hit ground on the Eastern seaboard. A large "barge-like" Chinese ship built and perfected back then blew off course and "maybe landed on not specified, archaeologists are now trying to dig up Chinese ship-building wood they think is buried in sand dunes. (P.D.) ... "

It is now June 2011 and here is the UPDATE: It's All or Nothing according to "Feng Shui" !!!
Retrieved from email  |  Source Unknown

The Year 2011, is the year of Feng Shui and Luck, which I wish for you all.

The month of July this year has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. This combination arrives only once every 623 years. The Chinese call this phenomenon “The Sacs of money” .

If you pass on this message, Chinese tradition says you will receive money in 5 days. And according to Feng Shui, those who do not pass on this message will have financial problems for the rest of the year.

This year is a bit special. We will have 4 unusual dates:

1/1/11, 11/1/11, 1/11/11, 11/11/11

...and that is not all.

Take the last two digits of the year of your birth and the age you will have or have this year, add them, and the sum for everyone is 111 !

Ex: 63 + 48 = 111

This year is the Year of Money and Wealth. The month of October will have 5 Saturdays, 5 Sundays and 5 Mondays ! This combination arrives only once every 823 years ! These years are called the years of Gain.

The proverb says that if you pass on this message to 8 good friends you will discover money in the next 4 days ! And the rule of Feng Shui also says that if you do not you will receive nothing !

This is all very mysterious - but perhaps it is worth the try !!

Eat it Up; the Navy can't wait
I been to the depression chamber
'been lower than a grass root
I was ground up and dappled

‘Now hear this; ‘Now hear this'

‘Sweepers man your brooms
‘Clean sweep down fore and aft’

[Twheeee ieee wheet]

‘Clean sweep down before we eat!’
This is so good.....
This is so good that

This is so good that the
The Navy eats it.....
Aye aye, the Navy eats it up

I am tired from aches and pains
I been chippin’ paint all morn’
Hidin’ my chaw in my cheek
Twelve bells swells o’er the horn :

I spit my plug in the leak...
Yeah I spat t’bacco tar
To stop the leakin' thar'...
'til I return in a hour,
This is so bad that
This is so bad...

This is so bad that it’s good
So good, the Navy eats it...
Yeah, eat up Navy food...

We do--
The entire floatin’ Navy
At twelve noon, eats it up!

It keeps us all afloat

How we care for our boat
We steam to Tuscany and
We visit the China Sea
But what keeps us on our feet
Is three squares a day we eat

Eat up old boy
Eat up skulduggery
Scrape and grind; repeat ten times
Fix the hull 'n plug her ye’
but at high noon clean your plate
Eat up and clean your plate
The Navy cannot wait!

Trouble* is never over for fathers, and step-fathers. That does not ease your path to having children who have more children. The role fathers play is never a fixed asset, never a particular way, and certainly never finished. You, my band of fathers and brothers, are each a work in progress.

Now as your eyes glaze over, your neck stiffens, and your heart turns to stone, I want to make it clear: power up because it is only just starting. There is much work to do. There are many banquets to prepare, transactions to honor, and battles to be fought.

Where is the wealth in an ocean of emotional retribution? It is spread out -- that's where. And what offence of mine do I do that deserves punishment? Simple answer: It isn't punishment.

A wise person once said " ... Show me a contented man and I will show you a catastrophe in the making. ... "

A man is what a man does. If you agree with that then the best source of joy for us fathers of brothers is to count our blessings.

If you are a man with a special craft that you can teach, that is a blessing.

If you are a Grandfather for the third time, that is a blessing.
If you have kept a soft heart despite it all, that is a blessing.
If your Dad is still around, puttering and growling, be blessed.
If you recovered from illness or injury -- ditto.
If you have been in love -- say no more.

Anyone have a blessing in their lives? And while you think that one over I provided some shuffling Pribek music for you to get your toes tapping, and get your song bird on.

Projects that MooPig has not been asked to Help With :: "Chandra Mission"

"Scientists say at least 30 million black holes had formed before the universe was 1 billion years old..."
Retrieved by Pat Darnell   |  June 18, 2011   |  Bryan TX   |   [LINK]

Many of us are just getting around to understanding the mystifying work that has been accomplished by our Space Shuttle Program. Besides all the rendezvous's with International Space Station, Space Shuttles have launched "... NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, which was ... deployed by Space Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999, is the most sophisticated X-ray observatory built to date. (The Chandra Mission. April 21, 2009. [HERE]). ... "

In a seemingly never-ending quest by humans to discover what we, and all things, are made of, Chandra's fantastic systems pixel-ates for us the unseen high energy x-rays throughout our universe. Galaxies are studied to determine if the black hole in their centers came before or after the galaxies were formed.

We are surprised to find that "... The Chandra observatory was first proposed to NASA in 1976 and funding began in 1977 when NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center started the definition studies of the telescope."

Therefore MooPig, which was founded in the late 90's, was not included in the development of this project. That does not mean we cannot enjoy the results, eh?

There must be engineers around who have spent their whole work careers just on the Chandra Mission. We would like to interview one of those persons if possible.
" ... Teams of scientists, engineers, technicians and managers who work at numerous government centers, Universities and corporations have been building and assembling Chandra over the past twenty years. Many of these dedicated men and women have been involved in the project from its inception. (LINK) ..."
