MooPig's Famous Last Words Department :: Harry Reid

Harry Reid: Bain Investor Told Me That Mitt Romney 'Didn't Pay Any Taxes For 10 Years': "Reid has jabbed at Romney before. Indeed, during the HuffPost interview, he seemed to revel in the headlines and fallout his attacks have caused.

"It's interesting, my guy from Vegas wrote this. He's a snarky guy, [Las Vegas Sun political reporter] Jon Ralston. He's a center guy. I like Jon just fine, but he's cynical, and I guess that's what serves him well. So he criticizes me for saying that Romney couldn't be elected dogcatcher," Reid recalled."

MooPig Site Review :: "The Freeh Report"

The War on Youth
Snagged by Pat Darnell | July 28, 2012 | Bryan TX
[Picture LINK]
Someday, somewhere in the far off future some one will say: "Wow, they played a game called 'football' back then?!" Can you imagine this convicted pedophile, as a coach, giving your child advice?
"You see, Plimpton, once you have been 'knocked out' it becomes easier to be knocked out."
Penn State, JPMorgan Chase, and the War on Youth - Truthdig: " Henry A. Giroux, Truthout, July 12, 2012"
The message is clear. Once again, crime pays for the rich and powerful. We can only understand what happened to the young victims at Penn State if we also acknowledge what recently was revealed about the criminal actions against children exhibited by GlaxoSmithKline. In this instance, Glaxo illegally marketed Paxil to children, gave kickbacks to doctors and made false claims about the drug even though one major clinical trial found “that teens who took the drug for depression were more likely to attempt suicide than those receiving placebo pills.” Penn State and Glaxo are symptomatic of a much larger shift in the culture and the relations of power that shape it.

Can somebody come out in support of the poor folks art Penn State? Who? Rick Santorum? YIKES!!!!
Santorum Defends Penn State, Paterno Jul 27, 2012 [HERE]
" ... Connect these dots and Penn State becomes only one shameful and corrupt marker in a much larger scandal that reveals an ongoing and aggressive war on youth. Everywhere we look, young people are under siege. Twenty percent of young people live in poverty and over 42 percent live in low-income homes. Young people now find themselves in debt, jobless, incarcerated or unemployed. Stories about young people being denied the right to vote, being abused in juvenile detention centers, taking on jobs that pay the minimum wage or worse living at home with their parents while unemployed and facing a bleak future rarely seem to arouse the concerns of the American public or its governing politicians. All the while, the ruling corporate and financial elite use their power to punish those marginalized by class, race and ethnicity - slashing social benefits, increasing tuition, refusing to abolish punitive bankruptcy laws, denigrating young people as lazy and refusing overall to invest in their future. The Penn State scandal has to be understood within a broader political, economic, and cultural landscape. Not only is it symptomatic of a growing culture of cruelty, hyper-masculinity, big money, big sports empires, corporate power, academic illiteracy, and the unchecked power of the privileged elite, but also as part of a larger war on youth, public values, and the democratic mission of the university and any other non-commodified public sphere. Moopig Site Review :: "Vimanas « Ancient Aliens"

Vimanas « Ancient Aliens: "Many Sanskrit epics, which were written in India more than two millennia ago, contain references to mythical flying machines called vimanas. Pointing to similarities between descriptions of vimanas and reports by people who claim to have seen UFOs, ancient alien theorists have suggested that astronauts from other planets visited India during ancient times."

Question: Why do television scenes concerning an Occult Gathering most always look something like a Presbyterian Sunday 11 AM Morning Service? Answer me that MooPig. [FAQ by Paul Beareh]

REPLY: Baruch at'ai adonai --and-- [HERE] Hey, thanks for the question, Mr Beareh, we were just talking about that very aspect of TV shows this morning in our bi-decade'l meeting of MooPig Presents. We have often thought that the meeting of Pagans at their Pagan Temple of Choice to exercise their powers stored in their various relics -- should be like the spinning of a Dreidel. There should be childlike glee and gay merriment, and Charlie Daniels on hand to bust a demon's chops with his saw horse... no?

Television invariably presents Ceremonial Pagan Gatherings as boring, stiff, and fake. It seems to some of us that Pagan Wiccan Rituals and such, more resemble a JCPenney White Sale, as all the congregated are wearing bed sheets and linens. The chanting is call and reply led by usually the head Honcho Witch-man who has an Alpha Witchy-woman named Zelda Glitch at his side. There is some tension there because the Witch-man has brought along a Nubile Princess Witchy-girlwho will be eventually burned, zapped or bled out. And it turns out, the Nubile's restless, randy spirit has attracted the Sun-fresh Handsome Devil Stud-muffin Manwich who of course will not let her die this way. He had searched the world over and pfffft she was gone... left him with six children.

Pagan rites of passage are already frowned upon in most modern cultures. If occult members are going to recruit young folk into their numbers, MooPig might suggest making services more like a Quidditch Match at Dalhousie's University Stadium... with plenty of blood sport.

Jobs Bills are not Jobs Bills After all ...
Snag by Pat Darnell | July 22, 2012 | Bryan TX

Mark A. Brown I looked into this. I got tired of righties telling me that the Republican House has put out 30 jobs bills that are stalled in the Senate because of Harry Reid. I finally got a rightie to give me the list (it's on Congressman Ryan's website) and I looked up each and every one. These are not jobs bills. In fact, many of them are job killers. I posted my findings elsewhere but it is a very long post. I'd post it here but I am not sure of the limitations of these comment fields. Any suggestions on how I could post it here or where I could put it that I can link to (I don't have a website)?

Mark A. Brown Part One

OK. I checked them all out. Only a handful of them might be considered jobs bills. Almost every single one of them is designed to roll back loads of environmental protections and pet peeves the Republicans have had for years. It's a full fledged attack on the EPA and everything they stand for. Basically, they are givaways to industry in exchange for potential widespread environmental disaster. Jobs are a tertiary consideration. if at all.

H.RES.72 - Review of Federal Regulations

Directing certain standing committees to inventory and review existing, pending, and proposed regulations and orders from agencies of the Federal Government, particularly with respect to their effect on jobs and economic growth.

While this is probably not a bad idea, it is not a jobs bill. Changing regulations that it turns up might be considered jobs bills but most llikely the report will get done and moulder on a shelf somewhere.

H.R. 872 - Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act of 2011

Had a good laugh over that one. This is a bill to prohibit the EPA from requiring a permit to dump pesticides in the waterways. Jobs bill? Really? LOL!

H.R. 910 - Energy Tax Prevention Act

Prohibits the EPA from regulating, taking action regarding, or even considering the emission of greenhouse gases to address climate change.

H.J. RES 37 - Constitutional Amendment - Requires marriage in the United States to consist only of a legal union of a man and a woman.

Jobs bill? Really?

H.J.RES.37 - Disapproval of FCC's Net Neutrality Regulations

LOL! A bill to express Congress' disapproval of something, a jobs bill? So, if passed, this will create jobs? Are these righties nuts or what?

H.R. 2018 - Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act

Essentially prohibits the EPA from revising the water pollution standards for a state if the state doesn't agree with the EPA that it would be necessary.

H.R. 1315 - Consumer Financial Protection Safety and soundness Improvement Act of 2011

Ammends Dodd-Frank Bill regarding rules for running the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A 2/3 majority vote can set aside any new rule, require a commission to head the bureau instead of a single director (no more than 2 members of that commission to be of the same party), time limits for petitions to stay regulations, etc.

Scabbed on to the end of this bill is the termination of the FHS Refinance Program that helps people in trouble with their mortgages.

Jobs bill? I don't think so.

H.R. 2587 - Protecting Jobs From Government Interference Act

Bars the NLRB from ordering an employer to close, relocate, or transfer employment under any circumstances.

This stems from the labor union lawsuit that was filed against Boeing charging that they violated Federal law by retaliating against the union for striking (a Federal crime). The NLRB is supposed to uphold Federal law so they asked for a stay on the move until the issue was decided. It became a mote point when the union reached an agreement with Boeing (THROUGH COLLECTIVE BARGAINING) and withdrew their lawsuit. This Bill will effectively prevent the NLRB from upholding Federal law.

Jobs bill? The outcome would have been either jobs in Washington or jobs in South Carolina, not no jobs. With this bill companies could violate Federal law with impunity and continue driving wages in the country to the bottom.

H.R. 2401 - Transparency in Regulatory Analysis of Impacts on the Nation Act

This is essentially an attempt to stall and/or gut the coming changes in EPA air pollution standards. The net effect being to allow industry to continue to pollute at will.

Industry claims it will be too expensive to comply. This is what they say for every new rule but so far has been historically proven that most of these claims turn out to be a false claims. The losses in public health due to the pollution outweigh the costs to comply to the regulations. In fact, a study conducted by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst http://www.ceres.org/resources/reports/new-jobs-cleaner-air shows that there will be a net increase of 1,457,885 direct and indirect jobs in the pollution controls and new generation capacity complying with the new EPA standards. The new jobs and health benefits from the new EPA standards provide $4 to $8 dollars benefit for every dollar invested in compliance.

This looks like a jobs and people killer bill to me.

Mark A. Brown Part Two

H.R. 2681 - Cement Sector Regulatory Relief Act

This bill extends the time to comply with new EPA pollution regulations for the cement industry. Although cement plants are one of the heaviest air pollutors and the biggest source of mercury pollution, cement is essential for construction however. In the current economic atmosphere I can agree that giving them a little more time to spread out the costs of compliance is not something I would object too as long as the compliance is done.

H.R 2250 - EPA Regulatory Relief Act

Sorry but this is not a jobs bill. All this bill does is rescind the regulations governing commercial boilers and incinerators. It would allow your local neighborhood trash burners to freely burn, plastic, tires, solvents, oil sludge, or whatever with no oversight or restrictions.

H.R. 2273 - Coal Residuals Reuse and Management Act

This removes restrictions on coal ash dumps. This is some pretty toxic stuff. This bill would allow this stuff to freely blow in the wind, seep into the water supplies, and occasionally flood a community when one of their neglected dikes breaks on a pond.

Jobs bill? I don't think so.

H.R. 3094 - Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act

Yet another bald-faced attack on unions. The NLRB is set up to protect worker's rights and has recently passed rulings (finally) which sought to curtail the employer's heavy handed tactics to delay and obstruct the formation of a union. This bill is to rescind those efforts and bring us once again back to the emplyer intimidation and obstruction of the past and allow them to drag out the union election process for months to years while wearing down the potential union members.

Not a jobs bill but an anti-union bill

H.R. 3010 - Regulatory Accountability Act

An unneeded overhaul of the 65 year old Administrative Procedure Act which injects Congress into a more active role in rules and regulations formation. This allows Congress to inject it's foot-dragging incompetence into the process of creating regulations potentially extending implementation of ANY legislation additional months to years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data ( http://www.bls.gov/news.release/mslo.t02.htm ) shows that only 0.3% of layoffs in 2010 were caused by government regulations anyway. The righties want you to believe it causes 90% of the layoffs though. They want to remove all regulations and stall new regulations to increase profits at the expense of everyone's health and livelihood. As if Congress didn't have enough to do already, let's get them deeply involved in the minutia of implementing the bills they pass too.

Not a jobs bill.

H.R 527 - Regulatory Flexibility Improvements Act

LOL! This one ammends the previous Regulatory Accountability Act to include economic impact statements to each new regulation. Yeah that ought to speed things up. With this bill and the previous bill that ought to bring Congress down to passing 4 or 5 bills a year and spending the rest of the time debating over the regulations to implement them.

H.R. 10 - REINS Act

More involvement of Congress in rule-making. This is meant to ceed more executive power to Congress. Any regulation that has a $100 million dollar or more economic impact must be approved by both chambers of Congress. Currently they can already quash a regulation by a joint resolution of disapproval. Now we could further bog down Congress with literally hundreds or thounds of new things to debate and vote on.

I think these last thre bills taken together would be definate job killers. Congress would be so bogged down they would have little time left to work on legislation to keep the country running let alone helping produce jobs.

H.R. 1633 - Farm Dust Regulation Prevention Act

This one's really hilarious. It prevents the EPA from making any regulations controlling dust created by farming operations. This dispite the fact that the EPA has no plans to make any such regulations. How much taxpayer money did the House spend pushing THAT one through.

Not a job bill and a complete waste of taxpayer dollars and Congress' time.

H.R 1837 - Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Water Reliability Act

The continued California fight over rights to water. This bill attempts to redefine anadromous fish flows and repeal the hard-fought San Joaquin River Restoration Settlement Act (which provided a balanced distribution of water for farmers and fish). What it boils down to is who gets more right to water, farming and industry or nature and fish.

Maybe important for California but not for the rest of the country. I suppose if we kill off all the fish they could produce more farm jobs to exploit migrant workers with.

H.R. 2087 - Land in Accomack County, Virginia

Finally, a jobs bill! A bill to remove land use restrictions on a 32 acre parcel adjacent to a NASA airstrip in Accomack County, Virginia. This wouuld allow the county to build a technology and research facility.

Mark A. Brown Part Three

H.R. 9 - Small Business Tax cut Act

Oh come on, it might look good on the surface, a 20% deduction of a small businesses income. Then you get to the part where they describe a small business as a business that employs less than 500 people. Get real. That includes Oprah Winfrey, George Soros, and Donald Trump for crying out loud. They need to include a criteria for income levels first.

H.R. 1904 - SE Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act

This is a land swap. The Federal government gets 5,344 acres of land owned by Resolution Copper and Resolution Copper gets 2,422 acres to mine for copper.

This would create mining jobs so I would have to say it's a jobs bill. How many is unknown and the trade-offs to the environment and the indians is questionable and also unknown.

H.R. 4402 - National Strategic and Critical minerals Production Act

Deems that a domestic mine that will provide strategic and critical minerals to be called an "infrastructure project."

How anyone can consider this a jobs bill is beyond me

H.R 3012 - Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act

This bill would eliminate the per-country numerical limitations for employment-based visas and increase the numerical cap for family-based immigrants

Republican Senator Grassley has had a hold on this bill up until he struck a deal with Senator Chuck Schummer a little over a week ago. It is expected that another Senator will now put a hold on it. There is apparently a line of Senators waiting to put a hold on the bill. Don't expect it to go anywhere soon

H.R. 1230 - Restarting American Offshore Leasing act now

The reason this is being held up is because it is nothing more than giving the bum's rush to start up drilling in particular lease holdings in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. These are areas with deep water issues that exacerbated the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The rules regarding safety of operations in those areas have not been fully addressed yet. Key is the as yet unestablished methods for dealing with another similar spill. The righties don't care. Drill, baby drill!

You could say this is a jobs bill as it will put drill riggers to work

H.R. 1229 - Putting the Gulf of Mexico Back to Work Act

More bum's rush to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. Much like the previous bill. Puts a limit of 30 for approval of permits to drill.

This could also be termed a jobs bill in that it employs drill riggers

H.R. 1231 - Reversing President Obama's Offshore Moratorium Act

Yet another bill for the same thing as the previous 2. I suppose that you would have to call this and the previous two bills really only one bill. It would be a jobs bill though, but not times 3.

H.R. 2021 - Jobs and Energy Permitting Act

Gives Shell oil a free pass to pollute the air at will in the offshore drilling areas around Alaska. Apparently, freedom to pollute the air creates jobs. Just different jobs than those who manufacture and install the pollution abatement equipment. So this is a bill to create dirty jobs instead of clean jobs.

H.R. 1938 - North American-Made Energy Security Act

Essentially a bill to expedite the Keystone pipeline project. This is not really a jobs bill as building the pipeline creates jobs (albeit only a few thousand to build it then only a few hundred remaining to run it after the builders have gone) not speeding up the building.

H.R. 3408 - Protecting Next Generation Energy Security (PIONEERS) Act

A bill to remove many pesky regulations restricting oil shale development, open up drilling in ANWR, open up offshore drilling in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico, and force the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. In otherwords, a standard collection of the GOP's energy wish lists. Damn the torpedos. Drill baby drill! We've got to sell that stuff to other countries and enrich the oil companies.

H.R. 2842 - Hydropower Development and Rural Jobs Act

A bill to exempt small hydropower installations from review under the National Environmental Policy Act. This would be for hydropower projects in ditches & canals. I have mixed feelings on this. This seems like a land use planning problem in that without any review nobody would be looking at the big picture for the impact of a large number of units, some even questionably built, on a given area. The consequences of uncontrolled proliferation could be detremental to the area but nobody would know it until the problems started cropping up. I much prefer oversight and planning.

H.R. 2578 - Conservation and Economic Growth Act

A collection of 14 bills regarding roll-back of many environmental protections on numerous wilderness areas and protected lands. Examples being allowingn timber harvesting in the protected Tongrass Wilderness, increasing grazing on protected public lands, opening protected beach areas to dune buggies, among many. There is also a portion that turns over a 100 mile strip of all borders to complete control of the Department of Homeland Security, who has stated they don't need that control. This is not a jobs bill it is just an excuse to roll back restrictions on protected lands.

H.R. 4480 - Domestic Energy and Jobs Act

Another collection of bills designed to gut the Clean Air Act, emasculate the EPA, open public lands to oil drilling (when they already are sitting on73 million acres, 45 million of which is inactive), inhibit the use of the Stratigic Petroleum Reserve, and many other roll-backs of all kinds of environmental protections. Basically a giveaway to the oil industry. As we all know, gas prices are determined by the world market so even brining in loads of oil from public lands will have little effect on gas prices.

H. Con. Res. 112 - Budget for Fiscal Year 2013

Paul Ryan's laughable and horribly destructive Federal Budget proposal. Enough has already been said about this. This is a straight out attack on Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare. This is a job, people, and economy killing bill.

H.Con. Res. 34 - Budget for Fiscal Year 2012

Ryan's previous laughable job, people, and economy killing bill.

H.R. 2560 - Cut, Cap, and Balance

Harry Reid said it best, "One of the worst pices of legislation ever placed on the floor of the United States Senate." This was a joke with absolutely no chance of passing, let alone being signed into law.

Ron Paul Delegate Revolt Underway | Addicting Info: "If the lawsuit is successful, then the Republican Party Convention in Tampa, FL becomes a wild west free for all. And if that happens, all bets are off. The real winner in such a scenario is Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who carefully packed delegate selections with his people. The 2012 convention would rival the chaos of the 1920 convention, where initially, all eyes were on Leonard Wood as the nominee. The nomination went instead to Warren G. Harding, who had placed a distant 5th place finish in the primaries with less than 7% of the “pledged” delegates."

MooPig Brag Segment :: My Son

By Pat Darnell | July 21, 2012 | Bryan TX

One thing you will never much hear me doing is bragging on our kids... though they crave it I am certain. However, Pat2 was a Good Sport about it, and went along with me on this photo shoot, at the Flood Gauge marker, and it was a good day. This was in October 2008.

Pat2 is a natural musician, he can pick up instruments easily. I noticed this bit of talent early so I wanted to somehow document the potential growth of that talent, like any Dad would try. If I stood Pat2 up next to this sign marker today, well you can imagine the contrast in size... I still can't believe it myself.

Maybe we will do another photo shoot just to make it official. I call this picture "Flood Gauge Fusion."

MooPig "Inflated Resume's Department" :: Sheldon Adelson

Why GOP Mega-Donor Sheldon Adelson Is Mad, Bad and a Danger to the Republic | Rick Perlstein | Politics News | Rolling Stone: "Adelson's anti-union mania (I would argue) is the most important thing to know about him. For it reveals just how crazy, and how unscrupulous, the man is."

'via Blog this'

Did this one slip past you? Sheldon Adelson is the third richest American... and he adores Newt Gingrich. One, for Newt's big throated support of a one state Israel, no sharing with Palestine...

Secondly, he wants to keep his billions safe in low tax foreign countries ... He will support anyone running against Obama in the upcoming election however and has dropped a cool $60 million give or take in Robmoney's lap.

Ninety percent of Adelson's empire is financed by his foreign holdings... that means foreign money is going into the coffers to buy the Presidency, and that is not allowed.

I wonder what Jim Hightower might say about this modus mogul madness...?

MooPig's Ancient Aliens Annals :: Wisdom

Seraphim - The Archangel Pravuil: "Within the world of nonreligious or Christian influenced occult, the archangel Pravuil is often associated with the gaining of knowledge and wisdom, and sometimes with the maturing of the adult mind. He is also occasionally called the gatekeeper or guardian of wisdom, and that all who seek out the knowledge of the world and time, must pass into Pravuil's presence. Some pagan rites have sort of fashioned the angel as a spiritual librarian of sorts, claiming that if a person seeks knowledge or truth on any subject, that one should pray to him, and ask that he roll away all obstacles and reveal the knowledge that one seeks. "

'via Blog this'

In a very rare Bible translation that is off the beaten path, you might catch the word wisdom being referred to by name as Pravuil. With regard to the Christian inspired occult and New Age alien loving folks, the sky seems to be the limit with regard to who the archangel Pravuil is as far as they are concerned. In fact if you possess a decent creative writing skill set, then they're likely to let you add to Pravuil's growing list of angelic like qualities, or even entail which space aliens he hangs with in that land of greater human consciousness. That concludes this article, we hope that all you learned something new.

The "key' is to not worship Angels and there kin, but rather seek their assistance to help clarify the unknowable areas of your brain storms. Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.

Another important message from MooPig Wisdom; you're welcome.

EXCERPT  |  " ... The equivalent of six jumbo jets of people dying each day who enter a hospital has created a set of problems that the healthcare delivery system seems unable to solve. "HYPOTHESIS | " ... Our hypothesis is that health-care delivery system has evolved improperly and has built within itself constructs that lead to medical error and hospital infections. ... The next three causes — poisoning, firearms and falls — account for 90,000 deaths, combined. (HERE) ... "

'The Walking Dead' season 2 finale: Meet Michonne! - National TV | Examiner.com: "There is quite a bit that happened during the season finale for "The Walking Dead" Sunday night, but perhaps one of the biggest shockers was the introduction of a new character."

'via Blog this'

If you watch Television you notice that the shows that are one hour long are actually 44:13 minutes long. Commercials take over a quarter of the time to push the products. But even then TV directors push their own envelopes and present you with their version of the "cliff hanger" ending that will make you watch their show again and again.

As season 3 opens we will be entertained, or let down, as the characters become more developed. Depending a bit on the writing, and a bit on happy accidents, the shows directors might offer new information.

"Jenner told Rick that everyone is infected..." Wow, that makes me want to find out what that means!

MooPig Movie Reviews: "Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians"

'Holy Rollers' movie will mess with your head - National Christian Pop Culture | Examiner.com:
Filmed over two years, “Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians” follows the “Church Team,” a group of pastors and church-planters who mastered the “art” of card counting. By learning how to decipher how many cards have been played and which ones vs. how many are left in the deck, the Church Team basically leveled the playing field and beat the casinos at their own game.
"Holy Rollers” follows the highs and lows of one of the largest blackjack teams in the country: winning streaks, devastating losses, questioning their integrity and even the possibility of a team member stealing from the group. Through it all, I struggled with it. Was it okay for them to gamble? Was it okay if they won? Was it okay if they lost? Was it okay when they dressed up in disguise? Was it okay when they got kicked out for being card-counters? In the end, I’m still not sure. However, what I appreciate about this documentary, is that group of guys didn’t live by the black and white rules. They lived in the gray so that they would have to rely on hearing from God on whether or not what they were doing was the right thing.

Did Spiders Create The Universe?:
"Imagine a multidimensional spider's web in the early morning covered with dew drops. And every dew drop contains the reflection of all the other dew drops. And, in each reflected dew drop, the reflections of all the other dew drops in that reflection. And so ad infinitum. That is the Buddhist conception of the universe in an image." --Alan Watts ... "

“ Far away in the heavenly abode of the great god Indra, there is a wonderful net which has been hung by some cunning artificer in such a manner that it stretches out infinitely in all directions. In accordance with the extravagant tastes of deities, the artificer has hung a single glittering jewel in each "eye" of the net, and since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number. There hang the jewels, glittering like stars in the first magnitude, a wonderful sight to behold. If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number. Not only that, but each of the jewels reflected in this one jewel is also reflecting all the other jewels, so that there is an infinite reflecting process occurring. ... "

Costa Concordia Ship Wreck near Italy Shore :: UPDATE

Retrieved by Pat Darnell | July 11, 2012 | Bryan TX
[Picture LINK]

Concordia disaster focuses attention on how cruise industry operates - CNN.com: "Ross Klein, a Newfoundland professor, has written four books on the cruise industry and maintains a database online. At the congressional hearings in March, he told the Senate committee there were more than a dozen incidents of passenger ships sinking and 99 ships running aground between 1973 and 2011. Klein also testified that 79 ships experienced fires between 1990 and 2011. Even so, given the rapid expansion of the industry, the number of fatalities has been low. And cruising remains popular. The industry is now worth $25 billion a year. Most of its customers are Americans, with 13 million U.S. bookings in 2011. The industry also is tapping into new markets, especially in Asia."

'via Blog this'

The cruise industry makes it safe to ride the waves of the world... but pay very little tax to its benefactors: the US, the Coast Guard, and " ... they don't pay taxes that will help with these 20 federal agencies that are watching over them in various ways and whose services they use, or might use," ... how is that a good thing?

The recent capsizing and sinking of the Costa Concordia raises a thousand questions but it is all rhetoric. Most cruising standards proposed by the International Maritime Organization are "voluntary."

Cruise ship companies move their flags to the cheapest countries providing "Cheap registration fees, low or no taxes and freedom to employ cheap labor are the motivating factors behind a ship owner's decision to 'flag out.'"

The sinking of the Costa Concordia seems to be a tiny blip on the map for the cruise industry. I won't get on one of those Titanic's any time soon.

With 13 million U.S. bookings in 2011, hardly anyone notices the sinking ships out there.

Tai Chi increases brain size, benefits cognition in randomized controlled trial of Chinese elderly:

It turns out what my Pappy has preached for decades is true:
"Epidemiologic studies have shown repeatedly that individuals who engage in more physical exercise or are more socially active have a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease," Dr. Mortimer said. "The current findings suggest that this may be a result of growth and preservation of critical regions of the brain affected by this illness." (ScienceDaily. [June 19, 2012]. LINK)
We now have brain industries to tell us how this all works. Keeping the brain volume up is dynamic for us older, and getting older, folks. The study in this article sought to find the result in using Tai Chi with weekly conversations for brain health in older Chinese folks. It was a success.

Feds: Georgia banker missing, so is $17 million - CNN.com:
EXCERPT  |  " ... Atlanta (CNN) -- A Georgia banker who went missing last month is being sought by federal authorities for allegedly embezzling millions of dollars from a south Georgia bank.

Aubrey "Lee" Price, 46, is charged with wire fraud, and is suspected of defrauding more than 100 investors of at least $17 million dollars over the course of two years, a criminal complaint from the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of New York, said.
'via Blog this'
In late 2010, Price was celebrated by his peers and written up in newspaper articles after a company he controlled bought a controlling portion of the troubled Montgomery Bank and Trust in Ailey, Georgia. He was supposed to invest the bank's capital. Instead, prosecutors say Price used a New York-based "clearing firm" -- a dummy company set up to hide money -- to coverup fraudulent wire transfers and investments.
Montgomery Bank and Trust in Ailey -- about 170 miles southeast of Atlanta -- had been in operation for nearly 90 years when it was closed Friday by the state of Georgia, with the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation named as receiver. The FDIC said Ameris Bank in Moultrie, Georgia, would take over operations of Montgomery's accounts and its two branches.

MooPig's Home School :: "The Alternatives"

Working Stiffs At Age 15 | Blogs | Industrial Maintenance and Plant Operations

'via Blog this'

Here's my deal about this education conundrum. The bottle neck is the workforce. Without a prepared and capable workforce there is no industry. And, 300 million Americans in the Service or Entertainment Industries is afoul of everything we as a nation stand for.
EXCERPT | " ... The issue here is the lack of knowledge and experience of a high school student. Students are not equipped to choose a career at age 15. Just 7 years earlier, they probably wanted to be a doctor, teacher, firefighter, mail man, and astronaut all at once, while becoming a rockstar in their free time. My interests have had many different ebbs and flows since my days in high school, and I’m sure yours have too. A broad exposure to subject areas and the challenges within them is incredibly important in both high school and college, so why pick a profession at 15? ... "
I suggest you get rid of Middle Schools as they are organized today, and make them all into farms. You put a 14 year old on a farm and he or she will get the most liberal arts schooling known to this earth. Then you implement apprenticeships in those schools so that by the time the student is in decision mode later in high school, he has some experience in industry. SCREW the system, it sucks so bad it resembles a Hoover.

Besides how is anyone going to afford all those Services and Entertainments that a leisure-tronic society so desperately holds on to? We need workers who are unafraid, and privy to what it takes to "work." Education is the key to an internal lock mechanism in each boy and girl. If not properly turned, that key can lock up a person for his entire life.

MooPig's Money Column :: "Tricky IRA Rules"

[Picture LINK] Stephen Root Milton of Office Space fame.... fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.

How to Protect Yourself From Tricky IRA Rules - SmartMoney.com: ""It's a wake-up call for anyone who has an IRA," says Martin Censor, a manager at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. "The government needs money. This is low-hanging fruit.""

'via Blog this'
EXCERPT | " ... Making an "excess contribution" -- meaning you contributed more than the annual limit to a traditional IRA or made a Roth contribution when your income was too high -- can cost you 6% of the amount that wasn't allowed in the account. This can add up fast in cases where an excess contribution went undetected for many years. Sometimes, excess contributions also result when a transfer of assets from one IRA to another doesn't get done in the time allowed.

Arthur Elkin, a 60-year-old retired federal-government worker in Delaware, didn't realize he and his wife had made excess contributions to their Roth IRAs for seven years until he started working with a new accountant. Their income had topped the $150,000 maximum then allowed for making contributions, but their previous accountant hadn't caught the problem.

The couple had to file seven years of amended returns, withdraw the contributions and pay thousands of dollars in penalties and interest. The worst part, Mr. Elkin says: realizing that, had he kept preparing his own tax returns, as he had in the past, the software probably would have caught the error.

Higgs boson announcement: Live updates | News | National Post:

4:11 a.m.: From release:

“It’s hard not to get excited by these results,” said CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci. “ We stated last year that in 2012 we would either find a new Higgs-like particle or exclude the existence of the Standard Model Higgs. With all the necessary caution, it looks to me that we are at a branching point: the observation of this new particle indicates the path for the future towards a more detailed understanding of what we’re seeing in the data.”
4:08 a.m.: CERN issues press release:

“‘The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found,’ said CMS experiment spokesperson Joe Incandela. ‘The implications are very significant and it is precisely for this reason that we must be extremely diligent in all of our studies and cross-checks.’”

Fabiola Gianotti: The woman at the leading edge of physics - CNN.com:  EXCERPT  |   "Housed in an underground facility straddling the border between France and Switzerland, CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) is the beating heart of modern physics research. A collaboration of 20 member states, it's also where the world wide web was invented in 1989.

After 18 years at CERN, Gianotti became spokesperson and coordinator of the lab's ATLAS experiment, which employs 3000 scientists. Her role -- a democratically elected position -- is to lead the experiment's strategic planning and present its findings to international media."

'via Blog this'

"Of course, mankind has made giant steps forward," she says. "However, what we know is really very, very little compared to what we still have to know."

The daughter of a geologist, Gianotti says she grew up with a love of nature and an immense curiosity about the world around her, fueled by "endless" walks in the mountains, when her father would stop to show "a flower or a plant or a little insect."
As a teenager, Gianotti became interested in philosophy, "a discipline that at least asks the fundamental questions," but took the unusual step of choosing to study physics at university.
"Physics also tried to address the fundamental questions, and often could give an answer," she says. "Perhaps not the final answer, perhaps just a little step forward. I liked it immediately," she says.
Although she moved from artistic fields into science, Gianotti, who also studied piano at Milan Conservatory, says "art and physics are much closer than you would think".

MooPig's Science Review :: Higgs Found?

Retrieved by Pat Darnell | July 4, 2012 | Bryan TX

[Picture LINK]

What Finding the Higgs Boson Means | GeekMom | Wired.com: "The Higgs boson was originally suggested in the 1960′s by British physicist Peter Higgs. Higgs postulated that a particle gains mass by passing through the Higgs field, a combination of an electromagnetic field and a solid. Before the Higgs portion of the “Standard Model,” it was assumed that W and Z bosons interacted with other elementary particles, however, the mass of those bosons was always so large that it unbalanced and broke the “Standard Model”.

Thus, it was postulated that there had to be at least one other particle added to the mass equation, the Higgs boson. Ever since the search as been on to find the elusive Higgs, leading to the construction of the LHC."

'via Blog this'
"we have observed a new boson with a mass of 125.3 ± 0.6 GeV at 4.9 sigma significance."
The LHC is the world’s largest particle accelerator. Built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), and situated along the border between France and Switzerland. LHC’s sole purpose is to be a platform in which to test particle physics theories. It is run by engineers and scientists from hundreds of universities and laboratories from over a hundred different countries.

One of the main objectives of the LHC, since its conception, is to find the Higgs boson. So how might the Higgs boson have been found? The Higgs boson is known to be unstable, decaying into certain particles based on its expected weight. The scientists designed their particle collision experiments in a way that will emit particles of a particular mass. If the particles within an expected range are more numerous then the collision alone can explain, then the rest of the observed particles are proof of the Higgs boson.

I’m eagerly awaiting the announcement tomorrow. If the scientists at the LHC found proof of the Higgs boson, it would be huge for the scientific community and the future of science as we know it.
Only experimental data using the high energies reached by the LHC can push knowledge forward, challenging those who seek confirmation of established knowledge, and those who dare to dream beyond the paradigm.

Twin Peaks is part of a booming niche in the beleaguered restaurant industry known as "breastaurants," or sports bars that feature scantily clad waitresses. These small chains operate in the tradition of Hooters, which pioneered the concept in the 1980s but has struggled in recent years to stay fresh.

Successful restaurants follow Hooters' formula - Business - US business - msnbc.com: "The nation's top three "breastaurant" chains behind Hooters each had sales growth of 30 percent or more last year, according to Technomic, a food industry research firm. They still represent less than 1 percent of the nation's top restaurants, but the upstart chains are benefitting as other mid-priced options like Applebee's and Bennigan's have experienced declines during the economic downturn."

'via Blog this'

In April, Hooters also beefed up its menu with items that include a Baja burger, buffalo chicken sliders and a spinach and shrimp salad. The idea is to offer dishes that draw new customers, says David Henninger, Hooters' chief marketing officer. Currently, more than three quarters of Hooters customers are male, with an average age of 45.
