On this Day in....

On this Day March 15, 1973:

by Charlie Crane, Thorofare, NJ
Pink Floyd, Spectrum, March 15, 1973
Pink Floyd had been touring for over a year doing the Dark Side of the Moon line-up of songs — although they hadn’t released the album yet. Everywhere they played, it seemed a bootleg of the concert was released. The album would be released on March, 24th 1973 — but at that time it was still somewhat of an unknown for many. The program called the concert “Eclipse - a Piece for Assorted Lunatics,” as it had been called for about a year of live shows. But it was song-for-song and word-for-word Dark Side of the Moon.

PF came out without much fanfare and proceeded to perform the entire album uninterrupted by breaks for applause. It was awesome. They just played it straight through. Back then they hadn’t developed the elaborate special effects such as remote-control planes, flying brass beds, mirror balls, laser-beams, larger-than-life projections and red eyed floating pigs. The effects were limited to carbon dioxide “smoke” illuminated by mostly pink and green floodlights. There was a large gong that they used for their encore numbers, but it broke loose from its mountings when struck and the roadies had to do a quick repair. It was worth the wait, as they played “Set the Controls for the Center of the Sun” and set fire to the kerosene-soaked rim of the gong. The flickering flames dwindling down as the long epoch song slowly ended seemed to weave a magic spell and draw everyone into the gong — as if it had become the sun.

Before the show, almost everyone made paper airplanes out of their program and sailed them around the Spectrum waiting for the concert to begin. I kept mine as a souvenir and still have it — a testament to this piece of music history. http://xponentialmusic.org/blogs/885mmmm/2007/09/06/pink-floyd-spectrum-march-15-1973-dark-side-of-the-moon/

I wanna Write a Rock Opera, too !!

The highest new entry, at No. 5, was Monkey's "Journey to the West" (XL Recordings), the album of the contemporary opera written by Damon Albarn and designed by Jamie Hewlett, both of Gorillaz. The show had its premiere season in Manchester last year and made its London debut at the Royal Opera House last month. The show uses nearly 40 Chinese performers including acrobats, martial artists and singers, with an orchestra combining Western and Chinese instruments.

Piece of the Pink Floyd Pig Perhaps; Found in La Quinta, by Randall Roberts April 29, 2008 2:44 PM

There are very few breaking news stories in the music biz, and Pink Floyd's escaped flying pig ranks pretty high up there. Sources tell us that there are now two reports of pig -recovery operations currently underway in nearby La Quinta, California. [read on HERE]

Pat Darnell and Friends wrote,

Pink Floyd — isn’t that the barber of Mayberry… who later had a stroke? When was it he played in a band again? And I swear no one talked about drugs in or around Mayberry and Aunt Bea. Ron Howard grew up to be a really good movie maker… and bald, but I sure don’t remember Dave, Roger or Syd. (Roger Rabbit and Syd from ToyStory?)

I feel so uninformed, dang it, but with a little help from you, my friends, I might get The Final Cut off The Wall, pending you divulge a Saucer Full of Secrets. A Momentary Lapse of Reason left my Atom Heart Mother temporarily Obscured by the clouds, so we both followed the Piper to the gates of Dawn. Wish You Were Here on the Dark Side of the Moon !! En Fuego, Sans… muy en fuego!!!

"Imagine this pig exploding high up in the atmosphere, and floating down onto the village of La Quinta. Somebody should write a boring rock opera about it.

LA Weekly will be offering round-the-clock reportage on what is perhaps the most tragic event in Coachella history. We dedicate this post to the pig. It was a great run, and you almost made it.

American Idiot Becomes a Film Nov 10, 2005
[SOURCE]

You write a rock opera; it becomes a smash hit album. Isn't it logical to make it into a movie?

Singer/guitarist Billy Joe Armstrong revealed that he's taking on some of the writing and production roles for an upcoming American Idiot (2004, Reprise) (read Aversion's review) film. The movie, which will revolve around the rock-opera presented on the Berkley pop-punk band's latest album, will, quite unsurprisingly, take its cues from The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia. Whether that means Elton John will make an appearance as a flamboyant Pinball Wizard or not has yet to be decided.

Green Day won’t appear in the movie, however. Fans will have to make due with the 14-minute version of the “Jesus of Suburbia” video (read full story), which stars the punks in about 15 percent of a movie.
