MooPig Tech Coroner :: "Google TV Is Dead"

No, it's not Totally Dead...
Retrieved by Pat Darnell | Jan 12, 2014 | Bryan TX

[Picture LINK] In a post-Google TV era, Hisense takes a first stab at defining Android on TV

Before the turn of the century, some folks predicted that Television as it is would be totally gone by 2045. We may be on schedule for that. Television is still a huge conglomerate with the most subscribers of any media system. It is to me, an enigma, that is, a puzzle that keeps changing its outcome.

When Google started Google TV, it was ahead of its time. That is kind of typical of Google and its offerings. After three years Google TV is just really getting started:
" ... Google TV leverages many of Google’s existing products. Google TV’s operating system, a customized version of Android, provides the underlying foundation, allowing developers to create applications that extend the system’s functionality. Google’s Chrome browser provides a gateway to the Internet, allowing consumers to browse web sites and watch television, in tandem.
" ... Consumers can access HBO, CNBC, and content from other providers through the Chrome browser. Android and Apple smartphones and tablet computers may be used as remote controls for Google TV. Google TV products ship with wireless remote controls with a full QWERTY keypad. An update in November 2011, allowed access to Google Play and enabled search to find content from live TV, Netflix, YouTube, HBO GO, Amazon, and more. ... A future Google TV 4 update will have casting support from supported apps, the same as the Chromecast. (y ikki peed ya. LINK)..."
Google TV Is Dead, Long Live Google-Powered TV | Will Greenwald | PCMag.com: "These days, Google TV is all but forgotten, and surprisingly that signals not that Android is leaving home entertainment, but that it's finally starting to show up. HDTV manufacturers are turning to Android for their connected HDTV interfaces. I saw four different companies at CES 2014 with their own spins on Android to power their home entertainment devices. (Will Greenwald. January 10, 2014. LINK) ..."

"But Google TV was plagued with a long list of problems, one of them being the strict requirements Google put in place for its hardware partners. For example, the first generation of Google TV needed to include a full traditional QWERTY keyboard, leading to unwieldy and confusing remote controls. (Janko Roettgers. JAN. 15, 2014. LINK)."

'via Blog this'
But the customization nature of Android is a boon for HDTV manufacturers looking to move into the budget and midrange HDTV market as the more prominent names set their sights on big, expensive, advanced screens. As companies looking to get a foothold in the North American market explore ways to make their less expensive screens more feature-rich, we could finally see Android become a big force in home entertainment. It just won't be Google designing or tweaking it.
CONCLUSION
Google TV did not make much of a splash when it was introduced, but now it is on track as a suitable base for many companies who want to expand on the television experience. If you own an iPhone or an Android, you are already compatible with Google TV. You might want to look into the possibilities of linking up to streaming TV and other services.

MooPig Solutions Department :: "2008 Copenhagen Consensus"

Review of World's Best Solutions 2008
Retrieved by Pat Darnell | Dec 30, 2012 | Bryan TX

The Top Ten Solutions to the World's Biggest Problems - Reason.com: "Copenhagen, May 30, 2008 Ronald Bailey — " ... Where in the world can we do the most good? Supplying the micronutrients vitamin A and zinc to 80 percent of the 140 million children who lack them in developing countries is ranked as the highest priority by the expert panel at the Copenhagen Consensus 2008 Conference. The cost is $60 million per year, yielding benefits in health and cognitive development of over $1 billion."

'via Blog this'

The tasks of solving problems requires developing economies of developing countries to play leap frog. For instance, " ... proposals to reduce outdoor air pollution in developing country cities by installing technologies to cut the emissions of particulates from diesel vehicles. Other ... solutions included a tobacco tax, improved stoves to reduce indoor air pollution, and extending microfinance. ... "

The leap frog tactic would allow developing economies to start with 'state-of-the-art' technologies at the beginning of their development, thus leap frog over the existing problematic carbon spewing technologies. China could start building low emission automobiles from the start, and bypass wasteful years of making carbon cannon cars.

Those are lofty installations. In most installations of new technology, the cost is recovered over twenty to ninety years in returns on investing in the welfare of developing countries. In other words, each solution is evaluated on its initial cost, usually in billions, and its return on investment.
" ... In fact, the climate change analysis presented to the panel found that spending $800 billion until 2100 would yield just $685 billion in climate change benefits. (Ronald Bailey | May 30, 2008. HERE) ... "
Whereas, " ... [e]ight leading economists, including five Nobelists, were asked to prioritize 30 different proposed solutions to ten of the world's biggest problems... " this included problems with balanced distribution of the world's remaining resources. (ibid.)

Each solution, or opportunity, posted in the chart above could be historically a reason for war. Epidemics, migrations, trade deficits, regional catastrophe, and starvation all have caused war in our first 12,000 years of recorded history. What makes this era different? [Chart Source LINK]

Also, we still have a thousand year history of boom/bust cycles in economy. It is still going on. Japan has been in a bust cycle now for twenty-five years, although they say it is just a recession. Our USA has ceased being a developing economy, and now is in a twenty year period of "stagflation;" a term used in economics to describe a situation where an inflation rate is high, the economic growth rate slows down, and unemployment remains steadily high. (wiki)

Hopefully the developing economies can 'leap frog' over and past those hurdles we 'developed' economies now wallow in.

Brain Industries :: Labeled, Desensitized, and Redirected -- SINGULARITY -- PART Five

Why Singularity? From the © 2010 Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Inc.
Quotes retrieved by Pat Darnell, Emphasis by MooPig
  • The Singularity is the technological creation of smarter-than-human intelligence.
There are several technologies that are often mentioned as heading in this direction. The most commonly mentioned is probably Artificial Intelligence, but there are others: direct brain-computer interfaces, biological augmentation of the brain, genetic engineering, ultra-high-resolution scans of the brain followed by computer emulation.
  • " The story of intelligent life on Earth is made up of beginnings. (SOURCE) "

Brave NEW Words: EXCERPTS
" There are people who would answer that intelligence is meaningful in itself; that "It is better to be Socrates unsatisfied than a fool satisfied; better to be a man unsatisfied than a pig satisfied." ... "
" ...The beginnings of human intelligence, or the invention of writing, probably went unappreciated by the individuals who were present at the time. But such developments do not always take their creators unaware. Francis Bacon, one of the critical figures in the invention of the scientific method, made astounding claims about the power and universality of his new mode of reasoning and its ability to improve the human condition – claims which, from the perspective of a 21st-century human, turned out to be exactly right. Not all good deeds are unintentional. It does occasionally happen that humanity's victories are won not by accident but by people making the right choices for the right reasons. (ibid. emphasized words by MooPig.)"
" ... The Singularity Institute exists to carry out the mission of the Singularity-aware – to accelerate the arrival of the Singularity in order to hasten its human benefits; to close the window of vulnerability that exists while humanity cannot increase its intelligence along with its technology; and to protect the integrity of the Singularity by ensuring that those projects which finally implement the Singularity are carried out in full awareness of the implications and without distraction from the responsibilities involved. (ibid.) ... "

" ... That's our dream. Whether it actually happens depends on whether enough people take the Singularity seriously enough to do something about it – whether humanity can scrape up the tiny fraction of its resources needed to face the future deliberately and firmly. (ibid.) ... "
