MooPig FWD Email Department :: "Mosquitoes"

Dear Patdarnell,

The summer heat is here, and so are the mosquitoes.

Reminds me that we’re still in the thick of the Everglades, no matter how many buildings go up here in South Florida. My house used to be a swamp.

I’ve been lucky not to have many problems with mosquitoes, even when I travel. In parts of the world known for swarms of insects, they still don’t bite me much. There’s one called “The Assassin” in the Amazon rainforest. It makes the bugs in Florida look small.

Every culture I’ve visited has its own way of dealing with pests. The most common mosquito repellent here is a chemical called DEET. It’s known to scientists as “N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide” or “N,N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide.” All of the popular brands use it.

The U.S. Army developed it in the 1940s and it’s been on the market since the ’50s. The Environmental Protection Agency says DEET is OK for you to use. That it doesn’t cause any “unreasonable risk to human health.” But in my opinion, it’s just another man-made poison.

Scientists used to think DEET worked by confusing mosquitoes and interfering with their sense of smell. But recent research shows that DEET is a neurotoxin to insects and mammals. That means it attacks the central nervous system, like nerve gas does. If it does that to rats, I don’t want it on my skin.

I recommend natural bug repellents instead. Let me share what I’ve discovered during my travels...

Citronella
Citronella is a type of lemongrass, but it’s not the same one you cook with. In Bali, my friends Lelir and Westi showed me how they grow citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) in their huge herb garden. My own garden in Florida has just a fraction of what they have.
Mosquitoes don’t like the smell of it, so they stay away.

Citronella isn’t just for candles. Burning the candles can help if you’re lounging on your patio. But what if you’re out walking around? Then you need to take citronella oil with you. You can buy it at health stores and apply a dab right onto your skin instead of chemical bug spray.

There’s also a citronella geranium. It looks prettier than the grass, but the scent is not as strong.

Basil
Westi also showed me his crop of holy basil. They use it with citronella to repel mosquitoes and flies. Basil is toxic to mosquitoes, and especially to their larvae
Plant basil around your door, in between your flowers, and around your patio. Even better, go for a full herb garden – rosemary and bay leaves repel bugs too.

You can also put basil leaves in your cabinets and pantry to keep bugs out of the kitchen. It works at my house.

Andiroba oil
When I was in Brazil – a country with millions of mosquitoes – this is what the locals used. It comes from a tall tree that grows in the Amazon, but even the city dwellers use it. Clinical studies found it to be safe and effective.
Andiroba oil is also anti-inflammatory, so you can use it to treat existing bites and soothe the skin at the same time.

I liked it so much that I added it to my natural sunscreen, called Solis. Click here to find out more.

And if you do get bitten, remember this trick for getting rid of the itch: Rub the inside of a banana peel on the bite. It worked very well when a mosquito found me in Uganda.

To Your Good Health,

Here's how we Spin the Delhi Commonwealth Games Story

MooPig Contention and Cookies of Parody, by Pat Darnell

The whole 9\11-terrorist-like planned attack on infrastructure is the work attributed to this implicated, half-insect, ... half-human creature who orchestrated the entire catastrophe. What should have been the Delhi Commonwealth Games is now a tragedy.
"I'm trying to remain eternally optimistic. But at some point we will reach the point of no return and that is when we will have to decide."

The sense of impending crisis was exacerbated when a section of the ceiling in the weightlifting arena fell down amid growing fears over rising flood waters near the athletes' village, which had already been condemned by team officials as "filthy" and "unfit for human occupation".

With the Games at risk of descending into farce, thousands of athletes from the major competing nations remained in the dark about whether or not they would be boarding a plane to compete.

When asked 'Why he did it?' Mahmoud Admadinejad said "I could sure use a shave." That is when most every top notch athlete and his delegates got up and walked out of the room...

The beleaguered Delhi chief minister, Sheila Dikshit, played down the problems and accused the media of damaging India's image. "Something may be dripping, some tile may collapse, doesn't mean the entire Games are bad," she told reporters. [LINK]

It is now known that the accident on Tuesday, in which 27 were injured when a bridge connecting the athletes' carpark to the main Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium collapsed, was caused when a metal pin worked loose detaching the main structure from its suspension cables.

Five workers remained in a critical condition, several with serious spinal injuries. Most of the injured were contracted labourers from poor rural areas. Campaigners say dozens of workers have been killed and hundreds injured in a succession of accidents at Games venues.
Insect-Man, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, might have said Friday 'the UN should investigate the "true reason" for the "bridge collapse" attacks' as he defended a speech which implicated the US government in the atrocity.

"I did not pass a judgement, I simply made proposals for a humane solution to the problems that have risen as a result of Rugby players who eat their dead," Ahmadinejad told a press conference. [LINK]

Iran's Ahmadinejad compares West to a 'mosquito'
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad , a day after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that the West is 'not going to wait forever' for Iran to accept a UN-backed nuclear deal. By Kristen Chick

A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has compared Iran's enemies to a "mosquito" as his regime continues to stall in negotiations with the West over Iran's nuclear program.

Mr. Ahmadinejad made the comment Sunday, a day after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Iran that "we're not going to wait forever" for Iran to accept the UN-backed nuclear deal, reports the Associated Press.

"While enemies have used all their capacities ... the Iranian nation is standing powerfully and they are like a mosquito," a government Web site quoted Ahmadinejad early Sunday as saying. ... "Given the negative record of Western powers, the Iranian government ... looks at the talks with no trust. But realities dictate to them to interact with the Iranian nation."

[ ... ]
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - perhaps the world's best-known Holocaust denier - might actually be Jewish, according to a bombshell report published on Saturday.

Ahmadinejad's family apparently changed its name from Sabourjian, a Jewish name meaning "cloth weaver," when it converted to Islam after his birth, the London's Daily Telegraph says.

The nuke-pursuing Iranian was photographed in March holding up his identity card, revealing a scrawled note suggesting the shocking name change.(SOURCE)

[ ... ] While Ahmadinejad takes a tough line with the international community, he also faces new challenges at home. The British daily The Guardian reports that Iranian students are planning a massive protest Wednesday against the president's regime on the 30th anniversary of the takeover of the US embassy in Iran by students.

The demonstration is a continuation of the protests that swept through Iran after a disputed election in June, in which Ahmadinejad claimed victory over accusations of massive fraud. The Guardian reports that universities have become hubs of underground dissent since June. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi appeared to support the planned protest, reports the newspaper, and said that the significance of planning it on the anniversary of student takeover of the US embassy is to remind Iran that "it is the people who are the leaders."

Hey Barry, and while you're circle jerking with your executive vanities, don't forget North Korea too. Katrina their leader's collective asses, as well. I'll pay for it.
