MooPig Brain Industries :: "Stroke and Heart Attacks"

Death Rates Correlate to Football Games
Retrieved by Pat Darnell  |  Feb 10, 2014  |  Bryan TX

In previous posts in MooPig Wisdom, we have come to find that playing contact sports like American Football, World Soccer, and World Rugby can cause long term brain disease. " ... Head injury study of 35 former NFL and CFL players finds that 34 of them showed signs of brain disease before their deaths:
  • Dozens of athletes had donated their brains to be studied by Boston University School of Medicine
  • Thirty-three of 50 subjects showing signs of CTE had played in the NFL
  • New interest in brain injury effects after murder suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs player Javon Belcher (4 December 2012. HERE) ..."
What about us fans?
Don't we get overly excited, or overly morose when our teams win and lose? I found some studies of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular activity measured during football seasons. Surprisingly, heart attack and stroke numbers went up nearly 25% in cities where teams lost major games. But the researchers warn that "these results show an association but do not prove causality."

How The Super Bowl Can Kill You: "Heart Attacks And The Super Bowl In the eight-day period after the Patriots unexpectedly lost the 2008 Super Bowl to the New York Giants, deaths attributed to heart attacks went up 24% in Massachusetts. Conversely, when the Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals the following year, deaths from heart attacks decreased by 46% in Pittsburgh.
1) Is this coincidence? Maybe.
2) But the researchers only did these studies because death rates in LA famously went up in the two weeks after the Los Angeles Rams lost Super Bowl XIV to the Steelers. And you thought the players were the only ones who might get hurt. (MATT MCCARTHY on REGRESSINGMEDSPIN. 1/31/14. HERE) ..."

" ... Not surprisingly, Super Bowl Sunday tends to be the slowest day of the month in the Emergency Room. In fact, this has also been demonstrated across the globe. Decreased visits to the ER have been observed during UEFA Champions League games and during the Rugby World Cup (ibid. MCCARTHY) ..."

" ... We can expect roughly eight percent of fans leaving the Super Bowl to be legally intoxicated. (It might be even higher for people watching at a Super Bowl party.) An interesting proposal that hasn't gained any traction: Experts have suggested that beer sponsors should subsidize public transportation after the Super Bowl. (ibid. MCCARTHY) ..."

CONCLUSIONS
" ... Viewing a stressful soccer match more than doubles the risk of an acute cardiovascular event. In view of this excess risk, particularly in men with known coronary heart disease, preventive measures are urgently needed. -- Copyright 2008 Massachusetts Medical Society (Wilbert-Lampen U, Leistner D, Greven S, Pohl T, Sper S, Völker C, Güthlin D, Plasse A, Knez A, Küchenhoff H, Steinbeck G. 2008 Jan 31. " ... World Cup soccer games and, specially, Brazil's matches have an impact on the incidence of myocardial infarction, but not on in-hospital mortality. (Borges DG, Monteiro RA, Schmidt A, Pazin-Filho A. 2013 Jun. HERE). .."

"...Therapies targeting this pathway can potentially prevent acute mental stressors from initiating plaque rupture. Limited evidence suggests that appropriately timed administration of beta-blockers, statins and aspirin might reduce the incidence of triggered myocardial infarctions. Stress management and transcendental meditation warrant further study.(Schwartz BG, French WJ, Mayeda GS, Burstein S, Economides C, Bhandari AK, Cannom DS, Kloner RA. 2012 Jul. HERE ) ..."

MooPig Brain Industries :: "Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, C.T.E."

C.T.E. Symptoms, Tests, Diagnosis, Treatments
Mashed articles by Pat Darnell  |  Feb 4, 2014  |  Bryan TX

[Picture LINK] "New research suggests that even small hits to the head may lead to brain deterioration over time. So what can be done?" By Luna Shyr. Photographs by Ann C. McKee, Boston University/Bedford Veterans Hospital

Symptoms Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Conditions 744866: "At the present time, the only way to clearly diagnose CTE is for a doctor to examine the brain after a person has died. This is how researchers are learning more about CTE."

Symptoms include:
  • Depression, including feeling suicidal
  • Paranoia
  • Aggression
  • Apathy
  • Irritability
  • Agitation
  • Impulsiveness
  • Poor concentration
  • Memory problems
  • Confusion
  • Poor judgment
  • Tremor
  • Muscle twitching
The symptoms may develop many years after the head injuries.
'via Blog this'

"...A new term was born: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) describes a gradual degeneration in brain function due to repeated head injuries that causes both concussions with symptoms and concussions that are asymptomatic (do not cause symptoms). Once the initial symptoms of concussion have faded, months and years later, new symptoms occur. CTE symptoms start slowly and creep up on the patient. Initially, there may be concentration and memory problems with episodes of disorientation and confusion, dizziness, and headache. It is as if the concussion symptoms were starting to return even without a new head injury. Emotions get labile and the patient can become aggressive and psychotic. As CTE progresses, behavior becomes even more erratic, with aggression and symptoms similar to those of Parkinson's disease. Finally, thought processes decrease even further, leading to a dementia with more Parkinson's symptoms including speech and walking abnormalities. The symptoms are progressive and cannot be stopped.(Medical Author: Benjamin Wedro, MD, FACEP, FAAEM. Medical Editor: Melissa Conrad Stöppler, MD. LINK)..."

TESTS
"...The debate over the scientific validity of such brain exams was highlighted recently when Tony Dorsett, a Hall of Fame running back for the Dallas Cowboys, and several other prominent former players said they were found to have C.T.E. after taking the experimental test developed by U.C.L.A. Dorsett, 59, told CNN that “they came to find out I have C.T.E.” and that his memory lapses, short temper and moodiness were “all because of C.T.E.” ( KEN BELSON. Published: December 25, 2013. LINK) ..."

"...The quality of the TauMark Scan is crucial because there are a number of rival groups currently developing technology to diagnose CTE in the living. These new assays involve analysis of cerebral blood flow, augmentation of brain architecture, and analysis of chemicals that are secreted by damaged neurons. There are literally billions of dollars at stake and you will see undoubtedly see more tests come to market in the coming years. When they do, you should ask the same question: Is this new test actually a good test for CTE?(MATT MCCARTHY on REGRESSING MED SPIN. 11/14/13. LINK)..."

DIAGNOSIS
"...Most researchers believe that C.T.E., or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, the degenerative brain disease found in dozens of former N.F.L. players, can be diagnosed only posthumously by analyzing brain tissue. ..."

" ...The diagnosis of CTE is tough to make clinically. No bleeding and or other major abnormalities are visible on CT scan and CTE appears to act like other diseases that attack brain function. It can be confirmed by autopsy and dissection of the brain but that doesn't particularly help the patient. An abnormal protein called tau builds up in the brain and causes abnormal nerve fibers and cell tangles. These abnormalities look different than those in an Alzheimer's brain in which loss of brain tissue is routinely seen.(KEN BELSON. Published: December 25, 2013. LINK) ..."

TREATMENTS
"...There is only supportive treatment, and the consequences of the brain injury include early death. It would seem that prevention is the best and only option at the present time, but that may be difficult when society approves of the violence on the football field and in the boxing ring. Young athletes see themselves as invincible and indestructible. The pursuit of short-term athletic glory overshadows the specter of long-term disability, especially when the symptoms may be delayed by decades. People may have righteous indignation about the situation, but for now it stops on Saturday when they cheer for their alma mater's colors and on Sunday when they cheer for their favorite NFL team.(ibid. Ken Belson.)..."

CONCLUSION
Having taken part in two of the sports on the list, American Football and Rugby, I remember having my bell rung many times in practice and in games. It got to be a game in itself to see how fast I could recover in order to get back in the game. I played lineman, Guard, in the pit where head and shoulder strikes are the name of the game.

I plan to donate my brain to the institution that could slice it up and study it after I am gone. I think it will help many in their struggles with mid-life dementia.

MooPig Sports Trough :: "Go BAYLOR BEARS"

9 Missouri  9-1   1012
10 Texas A/M  8-2   909"

The last number four MooPig rooted for was probably John McCain when he was climbing up through the Republican ranks for presidential nominee. He ended up number two. That's how we see BAYLOR football team today.

They are proving that they are no one's doormat anymore. Remember the old Southwest Conference? University of Texas used to win all the time. Baylor was a fly-over football team, made up of pre-med students, who might or might not have a propensity to withstand concussions of football play. You know, a concussion might limit one's ability to concentrate on his studies.

Rice and Baylor were both known for their academics, and relative small sized student populations. MooPig Sports Trough Department has been secretly rooting for Baylor since the advent of RG III into the annals of football history. What, you say, calling out Baylor only when they are winning? We are after all one of those lazy bloggers... eh?

I get sports and superstition, but what is it with baseball and restaurants?

REPRINT: originally as shown-- Two articles, and a bottom note:

The Curse of the "Billy Goat" Sianis

Steve Gatto (2004). Da Curse of the Billy Goat: The Chicago Cubs, Pennant Races, and Curses. Lansing: Protar House. ISBN 0-9720910-4-1.

The Curse of the Billy Goat is a curse on the Chicago Cubs that was started in 1945. As the story goes, Billy Sianis, a Greek immigrant (from Paleopyrgos, Greece[1]), who owned a nearby tavern (the now-famous Billy Goat Tavern), had two $7.20 box seat tickets to Game 4 of the 1945 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers, and decided to bring along his pet goat, Murphy (or Sinovia according to some references), which Sianis had restored to health when the goat had fallen off a truck and subsequently limped into his tavern.

The goat wore a blanket with a sign pinned to it which read "We got Detroit's goat." Sianis and the goat were allowed into Wrigley Field and even paraded about on the playing field before the game before ushers intervened and led them off the field.

After a heated argument, both Sianis and the goat were permitted to stay in the stadium occupying the box seat for which he had tickets. At this point, Andy Frain (head of Wrigley Field's hired security company at the time), waved the goat's box-seat ticket in the air and proclaimed, "If he eats the ticket that would solve everything."

However, the goat did not. Before the game was over, Sianis and the goat were ejected from the stadium at the command of Cubs owner Philip Knight Wrigley due to the animal's objectionable odor.

Sianis was outraged at the ejection and allegedly placed a curse upon the Cubs that they would never win another pennant or play in a World Series at Wrigley Field again because the Cubs organization had insulted his goat, and subsequently left the U.S. to vacation in his home in Greece.

The Cubs lost Game 4 and eventually the 1945 World Series, prompting Sianis to write to Wrigley from Greece, saying, "Who stinks now?" Following a third-place finish in the National League in 1946, the Cubs would finish in the league's second division for the next 20 consecutive years.

This streak finally ended in 1967, the year after Leo Durocher became the club's manager. Since that time, the supposedly cursed Cubs have not won a National League pennant or played in a World Series – the longest pennant drought in Major League history. Sianis died in 1970.

This sporting life: The ball gets it
Mar 4th 2004

From The Economist print edition
Lifting the curse on the Chicago Cubs

SPORT and superstition have always gone hand-in-hand, but probably nowhere more than in Chicago. In 1945 the Chicago Cubs baseball team banned William Sianis, owner of the local Billy Goat Tavern, from bringing his beloved goat into the Cubs' home stadium, Wrigley Field. Mr Sianis swore that the Cubs would never again win the National League championship, and the “curse of the goat” has haunted them ever since.
Last October, it looked as if the curse would at last be broken. The Cubs had a seemingly unassailable lead in the play-offs for the National League title against the Florida Marlins. But then a home fan, Steve Bartman, unwittingly deflected a vital catch out of the hand of a Cubs outfielder, Moises Alou. The Marlins rallied, winning not only the game but the league and, eventually, the World Series.

Had the curse struck again? While Mr Bartman hid from furious fans, Grant DePorter, a local restaurateur, paid $113,000 for the infamous “foul ball”, vowing to destroy it and with it, he hoped, the Cubs' bad luck.

During its final days the condemned ball was guarded by a team of 13 security men. It was given a massage and a final meal of steak, lobster and a beer. An Oscar-winning special effects expert, Michael Lantieri, was drafted in as executioner to make the sure that ball went out with a bang.

And on the night of February 26th, when a final reprieve failed to arrive from the governor, an explosive charge reduced the ball to a useless pile of string. Its demise was shown live on national television.

I'll let ~Pribek.net fill you in with the downlow on Harry Caray from St Louis... but remember Harry did it for love...
"Since you called me out, I'll tell you what I heard.

"Harry was a Bud man long before he was a Cub fan. The story goes that Harry had some type of tryst with the old man's old lady. The old man, in this case be Augie Busch. Guess that would make Harry a Busch man, instead. (please insert any of the possible Harry and Busch punch lines of your choosing, Pat_______________________________!"

: Uhh, errr... How about "Harry the wriggly bush-man" ? >pd"Anyway, it is said that Harry had "thing" for the lady of the house. This became fairly public knowledge and shortly after it did, our intrepid, beloved, slovenly broadcaster was liquored up, leaving a downtown bar. He was struck (purposely?) by a car driven by an unidentified man."Now, whether Harry took this as a karmic warning or a genuine threat from the front office is unknown to me. Either way, Harry hit the road. He spent the next year in Oakland, which he hated. Then he ended up with the Cubs.Retrieved by Pribek From the Baseball Reference 14 Jan 2008: (http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/November_3) "1968 - St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Harry Caray is struck by a car while crossing a street in St. Louis, and he suffers two broken legs, a broken shoulder, and a broken nose."The mystery continues."Obviously, this is all stuff I heard on the street. I don't know that there is any documentation.

"Urban legend? Well, one can only guess but, I have this same story from a lot of people in the Lou. Knowing Harry's penchant for the barley and the ladies, it seems, at the very least, plausible.

"So, I always found it the pinnacle of irony to see the old geezer dancing around in a Blues Brother suit pimping his former employer's hooch." >>Pribek.net"Jack, I agree with you; that is plausible irony. T'nks again.""Hey MooPiggers, see Pribek.net 'Trouble ain't Over' album in the sidebar above and BUY IT!... NO, BUY 13, a baker's dozen!"

"Hear Ye Hear Ye Hear Ye
As of October 3, 2007: Let it be known to the spirit of Sam Sianis
and all powers that be …
I, Leon “Bill” Bartman, have sacrificed my goat life and thereby have reversed the curse and have blessed the Cubs with “The Holy Cow” and in the name of Harry, Santo, Woo, Mr. Cub, ”The Girls,” Sweet Lou, Hendry, WGN, Mr. Wrigley, Tribune Co, and The Billy Goats of the World, and the Best Fans in Baseball
I SAY
GO CUBS GO …. Go Cubs Go
Hey Chicago What Do You Say …
THE CUBS ARE GONNA WIN TODAY!"
Now for all us beloggers, how does this all percolate?

"Well, maybe not quite to Glenn Reynolds' normal traffic levels, but still ...
This is what it looks like when you're tooling along with 250-350 visitors a day, and then a perfect storm last Friday makes you Google's No. 1 search result for "Steve Bartman":

The Steve Bartman post that Google pointed to attracted well over 200 comments that day, and is up to 270 now. The final visitor tally for Friday was 12,017, nearly 10 times our previous daily high -- and the site was even down for an hour or so during peak time because of a server problem. Wild.
The traffic dropoff accompanies us completely dropping off Google's radar by the next morning. I dug 30 pages deep in the search results on Saturday and still couldn't find that post. I have no idea how that happened, and no idea why that post is now back on the second page of results.
Google works in mysterious -- and occasionally wonderful -- ways.

We all know it didn't go that way. The Cubs are still eatup with its share of bi-polar dumbasses. I guess this is where "restaurants" come in. >pd/eatup / revised Jan 14
