Death Rates Correlate to Football Games

In previous posts in MooPig Wisdom, we have come to find that playing contact sports like American Football, World Soccer, and World Rugby can cause long term brain disease. " ... Head injury study of 35 former NFL and CFL players finds that 34 of them showed signs of brain disease before their deaths:

• Dozens of athletes had donated their brains to be studied by Boston University School of Medicine
• Thirty-three of 50 subjects showing signs of CTE had played in the NFL
• New interest in brain injury effects after murder suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs player Javon Belcher (4 December 2012. HERE) ..."

What about us fans?
Don't we get overly excited, or overly morose when our teams win and lose? I found some studies of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular activity measured during football seasons. Surprisingly, heart attack and stroke numbers went up nearly 25% in cities where teams lost major games. But the researchers warn that "these results show an association but do not prove causality."

How The Super Bowl Can Kill You: "Heart Attacks And The Super Bowl In the eight-day period after the Patriots unexpectedly lost the 2008 Super Bowl to the New York Giants, deaths attributed to heart attacks went up 24% in Massachusetts. Conversely, when the Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals the following year, deaths from heart attacks decreased by 46% in Pittsburgh.
1) Is this coincidence? Maybe.

Symptoms Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Conditions 744866: "At the present time, the only way to clearly diagnose CTE is for a doctor to examine the brain after a person has died. This is how researchers are learning more about CTE."

Symptoms include:

• Depression, including feeling suicidal
• Paranoia
• Aggression
• Apathy
• Irritability
• Agitation
• Impulsiveness
• Poor concentration
• Memory problems
• Confusion
• Poor judgment
• Tremor
• Muscle twitching

The symptoms may develop many years after the head injuries.

"...A new term was born: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) describes a gradual degeneration in brain function due to repeated head injuries that causes both concussions with symptoms and concussions that are asymptomatic (do not cause symptoms). Once the initial symptoms of concussion have faded, months and years later, new symptoms occur. CTE symptoms start slowly and creep up on the patient. Initially, there may be concentration and memory problems with episodes of disorientation and confusion, dizziness, and headache. It is as if the concussion symptoms were starting to return even without a new head injury. Emotions get labile and the patient can become aggressive and psychotic. As CTE progresses, behavior becomes even more erratic, with aggression and symptoms similar to those of Parkinson's disease. Finally, thought processes decrease even further, leading to a dementia with more Parkinson's symptoms including speech and walking abnormalities. TESTS

DIAGNOSIS

TREATMENTS
"...There is only supportive treatment, and the consequences of the brain injury include early death. It would seem that prevention is the best and only option at the present time, but that may be difficult when society approves of the violence on the football field and in the boxing ring. Young athletes see themselves as invincible and indestructible. The pursuit of short-term athletic glory overshadows the specter of long-term disability, especially when the symptoms may be delayed by decades. People may have righteous indignation about the situation, but for now it stops on Saturday when they cheer for their alma mater's colors and on Sunday when they cheer for their favorite NFL team.(ibid. CONCLUSION
Having taken part in two of the sports on the list, American Football and Rugby, I remember having my bell rung many times in practice and in games. It got to be a game in itself to see how fast I could recover in order to get back in the game. I played lineman, Guard, in the pit where head and shoulder strikes are the name of the game.

I plan to donate my brain to the institution that could slice it up and study it after I am gone. I think it will help many in their struggles with mid-life dementia.

The last number four MooPig rooted for was probably John McCain when he was climbing up through the Republican ranks for presidential nominee. He ended up number two. That's how we see BAYLOR football team today.

They are proving that they are no one's doormat anymore. Remember the old Southwest Conference? University of Texas used to win all the time. Baylor was a fly-over football team, made up of pre-med students, who might or might not have a propensity to withstand concussions of football play. You know, a concussion might limit one's ability to concentrate on his studies.

Rice and Baylor were both known for their academics, and relative small sized student populations. MooPig Sports Trough Department has been secretly rooting for Baylor since the advent of RG III into the annals of football history. What, you say, calling out Baylor only when they are winning? We are after all one of those lazy bloggers... eh?

Pain, my Pain; Veterans' Day 2007

Besides Rodeo Bull Riders... I seriously doubt there are too many who measure pain on similar scale as I do. Any one who was in Texas or Louisiana southern football programs can attest to no pain no gain mantra of the 60's and 70's.

Coaches of my era are Korean War Vets. According to them, every injury is only a scratch and a reason to move you to the bench if you say otherwise. "Spit on it, and rub some dirt on it," was their advice most the time. I am talking about an era just before steroids started finding ways into high school locker rooms. In response to daily injury experienced in football and contact sports, steroids are considered a panacea by players. Go figure.

No pills, no injections, just tape: In 1969 we only had a loyal fellow student, guy named David Cole as our humble trainer. Everyday before practice he dutifully taped our ankles, elbows and fore arms, using so much tape the coaches finally put a stop to it. -- David went on to become assistant manager of the Downtown Foley's. One attaboy Dave!

Korean War Veterans are survivors, and in my summation are last of their kind. As soldiers and as citizens never complaining, talking little about what happened over there, but carrying large sticks -- and never saying never. They are the strong silent type -- Horace Wauson, Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Thurman, Sanford Carr, Coach Smiech and about thirty others who were my coaches from peewee to college; these are the names of Korean War survivors who taught me and my kin how to throw a rolling side body block, and how to deal with one and live to tell about it.

Pain, my pain: arthritic joints, neck bones like burled roots, swollen fingers, and numb toes. I suppose I am in half the pain my coaches were in -- and twice the amount of pain as you. pd
