MooPig Architecture Nano-second Department :: "The Tallest Buidling ..."

[Picture LINK]

Is in Dubai...
Taller Tales Articles by Pat Darnell  |  July 28, 2015  |  Bryan TX

Take a nano-second out of your busy day and contemplate Tall Buildings around the world. What, and who do they house? We sure don't know who leases all that high floor space. What we do know is that tallest skyscrapers are almost always structures that define a place. That is they are what puts many places on the maps.

Sears Tower, a skyscraper in Chicago that was the tallest building in the world until the construction of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, put Chicago on the map for many years. Yes, that is Sears and Roebuck Company, but is now called Willis Tower, because "... London-based insurance broker Willis Group Holdings got a steal at $1 million per year [starting March 2009] for the naming rights as long as it leases at least 103,716 square feet in the building. Their lease is up in 2025. ( Melissa Harris, Chicago Tribune. March 4, 2015. LINK)..."

In the United States, "... Completed in 1973 as the Sears Tower, the 110-story building was the world's tallest for 23 years. It lost its designation of tallest in the U.S. after the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat ruled in 2013 that New York's One World Trade Center is taller.(ibid. Harris) ..."

Which brings us to the article we found about a very tall building to be built in China ... Changsha Tower ... building whose construction has been halted now for two years: "...The proposed Sky City tower was set to become the world's tallest building, but its construction was postponed just days after it started in 2013, amid safety fears and a lack of necessary government approval.(de zeen magazine, 20 July 2015. LINK) ..."

This modern hypodermic needle designed tower at 838 meters high, was to be built using modular components -- after pouring its foundation -- in only 90 days. YIKES! The large 2.6 hectare holes dug for its foundation have been filled in and are now fish farms and melon patches. Read more about it in this LINK 'ed title:

Planned skyscraper plot in China repurposed as fish farm: "At present the title of world's tallest building is held by the SOM-designed Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at a height of 828 metres. It is expected to be overtaken by the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, which is already under construction with a projected height of over 1,000 metres."

CONCLUSION
Land use has been the story of mankind. Bluntly, land grabs are the common denominator in humankind's history. How a hectare of land is "purposed" depends on the meeting of imaginations of humans who over come the imaginations of others who oppose with their own purposes. Once there is a meeting of minds, towers will be built. The mega-universal-corporation in the US that leases the majority of space in tall buildings usually gets to name that tall building.

MooPig Art History NanoSecond Department :: "Sigfried Giedion"

If you have ever had a question in your mind of how the environment of cities came to be, you might look into reading this nice book. You will just have to take our word for it. Sigfried Giedion was an Art Historian who lived at the turn of the century, 1900. His contemporaries invented Organic Architecture,  FLW and Alvar Aalto, and le Corbusier, and city scapes. This book on Modernism compares art, sculpture, and architecture as he explains his environment in a good way.

His 900 page book Space, Time, and Architecture -- The Growth of a New Tradition was recently [Sep 2008] investigated in the thesis shown in the attached reference LINK. The book was introduced in its first publication in 1941.

MooPig Architectural Nano-second :: "Japanese Glass House"

As Goes Japan, so Goes the World? ...
Mixed martial Articles by Pat Darnell  |  Nov 9, 2014  |  Bryan TX

We don't think so... Japan has a limited amount of real estate on which to build houses. So sprawling Ranch Houses are never going to be built in Japan urban space. At MooPig Arhcitecture Nano-second we notice that the living space of Karasawa's design is extended by the addition of out-door space on the roof. Other examples of this style also extend living space to roofs and to porches covered by cantilevered roofs.

[Picture LINK]
Rafael Reyes said this a month ago:
"Ok so obviously this house is un-livable for anyone but exhibitionists, but I still find the project really very interesting. It's the love child of Domino House, Farnsworth House and Villa Müller refined with that quirky elegance of Japanese architecture. [see below]

"Would be an amazing job to furnish and decorate it."

Yuusuke Karasawa's S House has an entirely transparent facade: "Designed by Tokyo-based architect Yuusuke Karasawa, S House is a two-storey-high building broken up into five split levels, creating a series of evenly sized rooms that are connected by staircases rather than corridors. "

MooPig Architectural Bombast Department :: "Froebel Blocks and FLW"

Frank Lloyd Wright wrought us Organic Design on a Grid
Mishmashes articles by Pat Darnell  |   Apr 4, 2014  |  Bryan TX

If we were to design a Kindergarten, this is how we would do it ... just copy what Froebel did over 170 years ago. Add this to your Home Schooling curricula, and don't be shy.

[Picture LINK]

Froebel ® Blocks - educational toys from the original Kindergarten: "When Friedrich Froebel established the first system for educating young children, he created a series of playthings to provide children with focused educational experiences. Up until that time, toys were intended for amusement and education was provided through books and instruction. Froebel's Kindergarten used play as its engine and his Spielgabe (or "play gifts") were the fuel. During his lifetime he codified the series of Froebel Gifts up through Gift 7 (parquetry tablets). "

'via Blog this'

Here is an edited transcript of the above youTube...

0:04 Friedrich Froebel invented kindergarten his "garden of children" over 170 years
0:09ago
0:09his spiel ... or play gifts were the original
0:13educational toys and the first child development tools
0:16Froebel developed his ideas about preschool education over a period of 20
0:20years
0:21from 1830 until his death in 1852
0:24he drew his inspiration from the great educator
0:27Pestalozzi and other philosophers such as Rousseau
0:30... main contribution was to synthesize ideas from education
0:35science and philosophy with his own observations of child development
0:41the materials he created were influenced by his studies in architecture
0:44and by his important work in the field of crystallography mathematics was more
0:49than an intellectual pursuit of Froebel
0:51it was the language of the universe he created toys for children that would
0:55allow them to experience the order
0:56and beauty of the physical world
0:59starting with gifts 1 through 6 children experience three-dimensional solids
1:04all forms of the physical world with gifts 7 to 9
1:08children experience two-dimensional shapes ... side to solids
1:11lines the edges of solids and points
1:15the cycle abstraction is completed with gift 10, the framework --
1:18-- this framework is a representation of solids made from
1:22points and lines
1:24while this may seem too abstract for young children the Froebel gifts help
1:28children to perceive the geometric building blocks of the world
1:31at a time when they're not able to understand them intellectually
1:35Froebel created three distinct ways to play with the Gifts
1:38he named these forms of Life, forms of Knowledge,
1:42and forms a Beauty, in forms Life, children are asked to create something from their
1:46world using
1:47... the gift pieces this could be a bed, or a house ...
1:51adults guide children through forms of knowledge activities in which the child
1:55explores
1:56mathematical and scientific properties with the Gifts,
1:59this could involve cutting the size of a cube, discussing the properties of a
2:03specific triangle or discovering the sound a piece makes when
2:07it is dropped on the floor, most types of math equations can also be reasoned out
2:11using the Gifts
2:13forms of beauty are abstract designs made with the Gifts using just two rules
2:18-- always use every piece and -- modify but never destroy
2:21design,  it is important not to dictate designs
2:25but allow the child to create if a child wants to make something new
2:29he must find a way to modify an existing design stages
2:32to arrive at the new concept ... by playing with Froebel gifts
2:37a child builds his foundation of symbolic learning by internalizing these
2:41experiences
2:42this is a natural process for every child Froebel
2:46only sought to refine it why leave such an important activity to chance he
2:50thought, when a prepared environment will better nurture a child growing brain
2:54in Froebel's garden of children, adults help children to explore the world in a
2:59concrete way
3:00many years before they will understand an abstract discussion of art
3:04nature or geometry ... the gifts were just one part of his total system
3:09which also included songs in movement games, gardening
3:12and the craft activities he called occupations ...
3:15these various activities reinforced ideas for the five senses
3:20visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetics, ... Froebel realized that in infant's brain is
3:25still forming
3:26he concentrated his efforts on children from birth to age 7
3:30in Froebel's time this was considered foolish, but he intuitively understood the
3:34mechanisms of the infant brain
3:36over 150 years before science could confirm it; ... next he understood that a
3:42child's desire for play was nature's way to help stimulate the brain to grow
3:46the true nature a child is that he is sincerely trying to make sense of the
3:50universe by exploring it
3:52... it only seems natural that the parent would give the child experiences
3:56designed for this purpose
3:57play is the engine that powers education Froebel use many materials in his schools
4:03but he only wrote about the first seven gifts ...
4:05his followers expanded the list to include materials he used in his
4:09kindergarten
4:10but never described in his writings because of this the number of gifts as
4:14has ranged from 10 to 20 different items
4:17almost immediately after his death in 1852
4:20his followers spread to other countries and began to teach about the
4:24kindergarten
4:25England played an early role in establishing english-language
4:28kindergartens
4:29the book by Johan and Bertha Ranga a practical guide to be English
4:33kindergarten
4:34was the first guide to the Froebel gifts in English published in
4:381863 in the United States the Milton Bradley company published Edward B b's
4:43book the paradise of childhood:
4:44in 1869 this book listed twenty gifts
4:48actually happen be should have been called occupations
4:51the difference being that a gift can be returned to its original form
4:55while an occupation craft activities such as painting or folding paper
4:59cannot be undone it was good business to have more gifts
5:03so milton-bradley encourage many variations on the gifts
5:06even placed alphabet letters on the blocks which is completely against
5:10...Froebel's plan
5:12next came Maria ...'s  kindergarten guide
5:15she outlined 13 gifts in volume 1
5:18and 11 occupations in volume 2 the extra numbers came from the various persons a
5:23gift a connected slats, Straight sticks, curves sticks
5:27in 1882 Herman Dahmer's German language book "the kindergarten" was
5:31published in English
5:33the main contribution by Dahmer, was the inclusion up the
5:36curvilinear Gift, he called five-b ... he correctly understood that
5:40Froebel had not intended to give series to be closed but to function along
5:44certain parameters
5:47Elizabeth harrison's book the kindergarten building gifts
5:50promoted the curvilinear series developed by Bell woodson
5:53and used in the Chicago kindergarten college the simplicity of the gifts in
5:57confusion about them led to their misuse
6:00as busy work ... or simply as manipulatives ... many kindergarten teachers
6:05use the gifts by rote,
6:06dictating their use to the 4 to 5-year-olds in their care ...
6:09it was the ignorance and rigid adherence to incorrect techniques
6:13that ultimately contributed to the abandonment of the Froebel kindergarten
6:17today ... for Froebel, is mostly known for his affect on modern art and architecture to
6:21the works of  Frank Lloyd Wright R Buckminster Fuller ...
6:23the educators of the early 20th century saw Froebels' work as part of the
6:28German Romantic movement
6:29or worse as some mystical quasi-religious ...  because of their
6:33unfortunate lack of vision and understanding
6:35the true power of Froebel's work was lost.
6:39the most amazing thing about Froebel's gifts is that they are not absolutely
6:43necessary to follow his method the idea behind the gifts is focused play
6:48this could be done with materials acquired from a nature walk
6:51or with everyday household objects there is nothing mystical about the gifts
6:56as so many educators misunderstood it is about a trained adult guiding a child to
7:01form connections in their mind regarding the nature of the physical world
7:05the adult gently helps the child to experience
7:08and understand these fundamental ideas ... in this way
7:12the child can put their new ideas into a context ...
7:15this is Froebel's goal  ... the understanding by the child at the logic and
7:19interconnectedness of the universe
7:21all future information can be put into the right context or framework ... his
7:26method allows children to form an outline for future knowledge
7:29before they are asked to fill it with otherwise meaningless facts
7:33children are not empty containers waiting for information to be poured in ...
7:37it is more important in this age of the Internet to know how information fits
7:41together
7:42than to memorize the facts themselves. The foundation of Froebels' philosophy is
7:47that humans are creative beings
7:49unlike animals, whose lives have not changed much in millions of years
7:53we humans are constantly altering our world ...  our superiority over other species
7:58is due to the fact that abstract ideas can exist in our minds
8:02it allows us to become creative beings we can conceptualize the vast universe
8:07or the tiniest sub-atomic particles it is both a profound truth in a simple
8:12fact of our biology
8:13the new millennium requires children to live in an ever-changing technology
8:17filled world
8:18parents and educators now realize that early childhood is the most important
8:23time in a person's education
8:24many believe that for Froebel's kindergarten is still the most advanced
8:28system for
8:29early childhood development ever created ... To recap
8:32Froebel created his kindergarten gifts between 1830
8:36and 1852 ... the gifts were part of a system
8:39including songs, games, and occupations ...  Froebel
8:43only name gifts 1 through 7 his followers created several numbering
8:47schemes for other gifts
8:48gifts 1 through 6 or solids 7 a surface
8:52eight is line, nine is point, and 10 is a framework for solids
8:57the gifts are not mystical but rather simple tools to stimulate symbolic
9:01learning
9:02... PLAY is the heart of the Froebel system  ... children construct their understanding
9:07of the world through direct experiences
9:09humans are creative beings who can visualize
9:13new ways of living Froebel wanted children to see the
9:16interconnectedness of all creation ...  We need for Froebel's method now
9:21for our technological world

MooPig Architectural Bombast Department :: "Abandoned Hotels"

Buckle of Last Resort Blight
reviewed site by Pat Darnell  |  Mar 5, 2014  \  Bryan TX

[Picture LINK]

I don't remember ever seeing pictures like this. I would love to visit these places, and have a camera with me. Some of the post modern precast concrete forms are absolutely beautiful in their dilapidated states. This is not "urban blight" and it's not "rural blight" ... it's something else. Many of these ruins are located on prime sites for tourism. So is it called "tourist trap blight?"

The photo's at the referenced site show not just abandoned ruins of hotels, they also show what has happened since being abandoned. Walls became bases for graffiti, ceiling tiles falling away showing stresses of gravity as hangars give way and duct work falls through the ceilings. Rubble on the ground is juxtaposed to fancy wood work in lobbies, and at check-in counters. Nothing is as sad as an abandoned stairway, as some are spiraling to the mezzanine, and others rusting as they descend to a plush beach. All that is missing is people stumbling around the place looking for a buffet, or a towel.

Go on look at these slides, it is a trip you might consider, if you are a junkie for desolation and dilapidation, eh?

No Vacancies: 10 Abandoned Hotels and Resorts (PHOTOS) - weather.com: "Water damage and rust have marred Kupari's once-majestic hotels, now overgrown with vegetation. One of the massive hotels, the Grand Hotel, was built in 1920, according to the Zupa Duborvocka Tourist Board. It housed 139 beds and featured an indoor swimming pool, and luxurious rooms with stunning ocean views. Photographer Ben Fredericson captured the images of the ruins of the hotel, now covered in graffiti and crumbling in disrepair, in the slideshow above."

However, this disparity has not stopped the ideas from becoming part of the mainstream design dialogue."

Between what and how is something today called architecture. Who ever goes craziest with their computer aided drafting and design software's is the winner. Questions arise like "Will this building withstand a 747 crashing into it?" and "What is it's ability to withstand seismic amplitudes of 9.0?"

Also, "Does it come in pink?" The new architecture is actually just old architecture that has come to pass due to unraveling complex proportion structures not made of brick.

Like everything else -- this too shall pass.

Mi Casa es su Casa... no?

"We boldly go where powder coated rebar reinforced Portland cement will take us.

Or do we?"

by Pat Darnell, Isak Kirinyaga, and Tomik A Sappo

Post Modern id of Domicile, ego of Docents, and superego of Obsolescence... You have just arrived in a home that is couture Francois, but outside it is Houston. You wait in a sitting room where you have been directed by a servant -- a wet-back in a starched white shift. It is starting to bug you, so you attempt to read the Architectural Digest from the coffee table, that has this very house on its cover.

Have you ever Read an Article in Architectural Digest?
Architectural Digest Articles illuminated with extraordinary photography might go something like this:

...Seems unlikely that we heirs of Post Modernism would have any idea why "Post," since when we don't recall any "Modernism."

It turns out there are many architectural schools living up to their names. Ever hear of Ambient Domicile, or Earth Home; Post Nasalize, or how about Fire Box or Tippy Canoe? New to that one? Some say it would require not having read any architectural theory starting around 1960 to miss such architectural movements. However, when we decided to "Explode the Box," we began to question just how large can that organism grow? The answer comes to us through Toy Story: "To Infinity and Beyond..." says Buzz Lightyear.

But when we say Post Modernism -- it sounds like we are saying "To Infinity and Behind."

I am thinking those who slid down the Modernism mountainside got to the valley eventually where all is stasis. It suddenly became necessary to declare that we are now Post Modern-organ-isms. As if this were a case against the inhuman-ism of Modernism, just wait till you see architectural id and docent ego re-define Watershed Walkabout Spaces; and just how that sweeps superego of Modernism under the carpets.
  • Id: Functioning on uncontentious level
  • Ego: Providing functional needs, while not upsetting superego
  • Superego: Contentious behaviors
Thus id is firmly planted in domicile. Architecture is more Modern today than it was when it was Modern. Look for instance at ancient abode, walk ways, and monuments. Eh? What do you see? Leftovers? Yesterday's quiche is the main dish? We all thought we would be ordering ala carte in this French brothel... no?

Form follows Function: is one of Modernists' edicts. Top that one with a Less is More, and "Success is mostly about showing up." Thus Superego is safe and with us in spirit.

It must be ego that is unsteady.

Architecture is depicted in almost every sense as place located in time and space where humans walk about under protective water shed and weather-proofed climate controlled environment... unless one were to include our International Space Station in architectural discussions. ISS is environment controlled protective building for humans to float-about. But, generally Architecture is a place of walking unburdened by weather, climate and man eating animals.

Review: We present a tag line that enables heirs of Modernism to break away from their inherited metamorphosed sediments of constructed obsolescence. We boldly go where powder coated rebar reinforced Portland cement will take us.

Turn of the Century progress --
  1. Since 9\11 all building is obsolete.
  2. Humans do not fare very well in zero gravity for long periods of time, without cataclysmic bone failure due mostly to "no walking about."

And so, it’s the end of the West University Festival of New Homes until next year. I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the three houses that really spoke to me. With each house I toured – I came away thinking “This is the ONE!” – how fickle I am. You see, I visited a open house this weekend and let me tell you – boy, was it beautiful. I’m thinking the open house I toured this weekend was the ONE!!! Does anyone know the name of a good psychiatrist in Houston? Specializing in new-house-itis? I’ve been struggling with this disease for a long time now and my husband is insisting that I get cured, quick. OMA
The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) is a leading international partnership practicing contemporary architecture, urbanism, and cultural analysis.

The office is led by partners – Rem Koolhaas, Ole Scheeren, Ellen van Loon, Reinier de Graaf, Shohei Shigematsu and Managing Partner, Victor van der Chijs – and employs a staff of almost 300 of more than 35 nationalities. Architects, researchers, designers, model makers, industrial designers and graphic designers of multinational origin work in close collaboration. Expert consultants are intimately involved from the beginning of the design process.

Since 2003 OMA has completed numerous projects including the Zeche Zollverein Historical Museum and master plan in Essen (2006), the Seoul National University Museum of Art (2005), the much acclaimed Casa da Musica in Porto (2005), the Prada Epicenter in Los Angeles (2004), the Seattle Public Library (2004), the Leeum Samsung Museum of Art (2004), the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin (2003) and the IIT Campus Centre in Chicago (2003).

The work of Rem Koolhaas and OMA has won several international awards including the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2000, the Praemium Imperiale (Japan) in 2003, the RIBA Gold Medal (UK) in 2004 and the Mies van der Rohe – European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture (2005).

To accommodate a diversity of projects throughout the world, OMA maintains offices in Europe (OMA*AMO Rotterdam), North America (OMA*AMO Architecture PC New York), Asia (OMA Beijing) and soon in the Middle East (OMA Dubai).

Okay, all right, that covers the "who done it..." Peking is a Boom Town, with major resource of People; people who need work.

Therefore, in total anti-boom-ist-ism is the USA. Americans are now swept back into their agrarian roots -- going GREEN, and all that jolly rot, good show, shovel manure and turn it into free fuels....

Meanwhile, after centuries of oppressive government telling Chinese to stay agrarian, like Amish do, China is quickly pissing away its agrarianism's to build improbable industrial structures.

I get it. I really do get it. Do you hear that huge BUT coming?

But, in Boom time is no room time. Projects that have been put aside during slow times, suddenly come alive.

Why? Because some primeval motivated people want to leave a gravity defying legacy. It so happens I grew up in Houston which is a sort of Peking on the Gulf. The Hoosier's who promoted Houston from the 1960's on have long gone from Houston, and probably too just started leaving the planet. In case you ever blow through Downtown Houston on the elevated freeways at 79 miles per hour, look at the mess that is the "skyline." Sort of a testimony to the molars in your mouth, with cavities.

Not lucky for Houstonians that they depart leaving behind a legacy of "We built it because We can."

The only real architectural legacy that makes any sense in Houston is found on the East side along the Ship Channel. There you will find the absolute most brutally accurate examples of Boom Town Architecture. Similar to the photo above that documents the outlying area of Peking, a rather dank hodge-podge of indigenous [housing?] in the Brutalist style?

This Peking thing is ten degrees off plumb, and its weight is some huge number that I am not going to try to calculate right now.

It is a design job that I might compare to the Chicago Tribune Tower. And I might look at the book by Douglas Hofstader front cover to see the Escher-ist drawing of Godel, Escher and Bach for his book of the same name. I am not going to go Ruskin on you right now... followup is warranted.

Now I get it.

[Oh, you are thinking Leaning Tower of Pisa?] Forget about it. All those Byzantine structures are falling, bulging, sinking, and reacting to seismic pressures in the only way known to us dusty farmers, they are falling.
