Huff Post tempts us with a fetching title. What ever do they mean. Well, they're right. My Online Dictionary says: "...television programs, magazine, books, etc. that are regarded as emphasizing the sensuous or sensational aspects of a nonsexual subject and stimulating a compulsive interest in their audience. For Example: 'a thrilling throwback to the golden age of disaster movies—weather porn of the highest order' ... "
That opens up lots of avenues for gaffes and giggles. Read the referenced article ...
The 25 Best Types Of Porn, Ranked: "These days, a beautiful photo of a sandwich isn't just a beautiful photo of a sandwich, and a snazzy photo of a Mercedes isn't just a snazzy photo of a Mercedes. They're porn, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
It's not quite clear when we started using the word "porn" to describe all things visually appealing. But here we are, and if you can't beat them, join them with a massive ranking of porn types, I guess? Here they are in order of greatness."

CONCLUSION
We are ravenous "porn" driven media eaters. And there is no change in sight.

Are Taxpayers Paying for Wall Street Execs' Bloated Bonuses? | Connecting the Dots, What Matters Today | BillMoyers.com: "For the past 40 years, corporate America has spent untold millions convincing lawmakers and the wider public that government intervention in the private sector results in painful unintended consequences that harm us all. At the same time, corporate-backed think tanks and media outlets have advanced the narrative that public benefits create a culture of dependency, and by doing so ultimately do their recipients more harm than good."

Earlier this year, Bloomberg calculated that the top 10 US banks receive $83 billion a year in subsidies from the government, due to their cheap cost of funding and the preferential treatment creditors give them because they assume the government sees them as TBTF.
In November, a NYT analysis of a Johnson Associates survey found that the top eight US banks set aside $91.44 billion for bonuses in 2013. (Goldstein, Alexis. Dec 25, 2013. LINK) ..."

What starts out as a great idea for a business often turns up in the foreclosure books at the loaning institution. It is the norm more than the exception, as most businesses fail in their first year of tribulation as a fully leveraged enterprise. Marginal returns get swept away as the loans are called in.
However, there are businesses that are thought to be "Too Big To Fail, TBTF" ... and these are given preferential treatment by their creditors and by the government. Yes, they are bailed out, so that they won't fail.

MooPig Tech Coroner :: "The NSA's Hugely Expensive Utah Data Center is Unusable"
The Security Industry Blows it Again
mashed articles by Pat Darnell | Oct 9, 2013 | Bryan TX
[Picture LINK]
" ... When the National Security Agency broke ground in 2011 on a $1.2 billion data center in Utah, it launched the largest defense construction project in the nation. (Laurie Bennett. June 9, 2013. LINK) ... "
The National Security Agency’s new billion-dollar-plus data center in Bluffdale, Utah was supposed to go online in September, but the Wall Street Journal’s Siobhan Gorman reports that it has major electrical problems and that the facility known as “the country’s biggest spy center” is presently nearly unusable:
The NSA's Hugely Expensive Utah Data Center Has Major Electrical Problems And Basically Isn't Working - Forbes: "Chronic electrical surges at the massive new data-storage facility central to the National Security Agency’s spying operation have destroyed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of machinery and delayed the center’s opening for a year, according to project documents and current and former officials. There have been 10 meltdowns in the past 13 months that have prevented the NSA from using computers at its new Utah data-storage center, slated to be the spy agency’s largest, according to project documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal."
'via Blog this'
" ... The NSA described the center’s mission as supporting “the intelligence community’s efforts to further strengthen and protect the nation’s cyber security.”
Its aim, officials said then, was to help other government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, in protecting national security networks.
It appears that its purpose is also to plumb other computer networks, in the United States and abroad. The New York Times reports that the center is designed to “to store huge volumes of personal data indefinitely.” (Laurie Bennett. June 9, 2013. LINK) ... "

EXCERPT | " ... When I [Kashmir Hill] wrote about the Utah data center holding less information than was previously thought given the current limitations of technology in this space, some critics scoffed. They suggested that the NSA is far more advanced in its technology than companies like Google and Facebook with which I was drawing comparisons. This report from the WSJ about the flawed plans for the data center encourages some skepticism about NSA tech. And it definitely raises questions about the NSA budget. The center itself cost over a billion dollars to build, has a $1 million+ monthly electricity bill, and has cost up to $100,000 each time a “kill zone” happens. Those numbers are as disturbing as the privacy concerns raised by the Snowden leaks. (Kashmir Hill, Forbes Staff. Oct 7, 2013. LINK)..."

Gulf of Mexico; Oil Spill 2010 -- A Whale Tale
This gigantic ship is an oil skimmer called a Whale ... it FAILed in design -- it was too large to turn around.
Ambergris, anyone? see comments!
A Whale' Ineffective in Cleaning Up Gulf SpillThis large mammal, is also called a Whale: Humpback Whale that is. It FAILed also, unable to navigate the curs'ed Gulf of Mexico OIL SPILL Disaster.
Published July 17, 2010 | FoxNews.com

" ... After a lengthy trial period in the Gulf of Mexico, a Taiwanese-owned giant skimming vessel known as “A Whale” was dubbed a bust, a federal official announced Friday.
"While its stature is impressive, 'A Whale' is not ideally suited to the needs of this response," Coast Guard Rear Admiral Paul Zunkunft, a federal on-scene coordinator, said in a statement late Friday.
However after weeks of tests, “A Whale” collected only negligible amounts of oil, leading to the conclusion that smaller skimming vessels are better suited for the Gulf spill.
"It may need a different type of oil spill, where you have thick, heavy oil that is concentrated in order to be effective," Zunkunft said of the giant skimmer’s capabilities.
The official site monitoring the Deepwater Horizon response says that more than 6,800 vessels ranging from recovery vessels to barges are currently operating in the Gulf. So far almost 33 million gallons of mixed oil and water mix have been recovered, and 387 controlled burns have been conducted to remove a further 11 million gallons of oil from open waters. Remember the Evacuation of Houston? Get ready for some real Quasi ~ clogging

Bunged Freeways and the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5, HSPD-5
§ What is the answer to traffic and freeway congestion in event of evacuation?
4Under the NRP, the Secretary of Homeland Security will consider, but is not limited to, the four criteria stated in Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5 (HSPD-5) when deciding whether to declare an incident of national significance. These criteria are: (1) a federal department or agency acting under its own authority has requested the assistance of the Secretary of Homeland Security, (2) the resources of state and local authorities are overwhelmed and federal assistance has been requested by the appropriate state and local authorities, (3) more than one federal department or agency has become substantially involved in responding to an incident, or (4) the Secretary of Homeland Security has been directed to assume responsibility for managing a domestic incident by the President. (Disaster Preparedness: Preliminary Observations on the Evacuation of Vulnerable Populations due to Hurricanes and Other Disasters. GAO-06-790T . Washington, D.C.: May 18, 2006)

Oksee maw’ ron
The whole materialization of automobile clogging in an emergency evacuation is an oxymoron. If I am interpreting oxymoron correctly, a phrase in which two words of contradictory meaning are used together for special effect, e.g. "wise fool" or "legal murder" or “pretty awful” or “unabashedly abridged” or other forms of understatement, like “Cubs ~ World Series," so that:

Emergency ~ evacuation ~ Freeway ~ congestion ~ parking lot ~ pedestrian ~ emergency ::>>>then the argument is false positive, such as emergency equals emergency!
"Houston, we have a problem"
Ever since they started building in the rice fields of Katy west suburban Houston, and building up the Stafford/ Sugar land salt grasses, things have not gone right for low lying Houston Metro and suburban land. Houston is barely 50 feet above sea level, and Greater Houston is more or less a transition from salt gulf to foothills. So what up? Oh, maybe a little suburban wide neighborhood commtiment to local governance would help. Or as stated above (2) "...the resources of state and local authorities are overwhelmed and federal assistance has been requested by the appropriate state and local authorities...
Automotive Clogging
The argument presents a corollary of not less than six possible venues for evacuation of Houston, in event of impending disaster, and at least three basic forces of evacuation:
Automotive Clogging
The argument presents a corollary of not less than six possible venues for evacuation of Houston, in event of impending disaster, and at least three basic forces of evacuation:
- Emergency evacuation > automobile
- automobile > freeway
- freeway > clogged
- bunged freeway > parking lot
- Parking lot > immobile automobile
- auto immobile > people on foot
- pedestrians > Emergency evacuation
Okay, I’m glad I got that out of the way. As the emergency evacuation is shown to be a galactic epileptic seizure, there remains one nagging issue. “Houston, we have a problem.” It seems Houstonians are so busy fixing other’s problems, they have only 20 hours or so to tend to the bizarre flagellation of self-inflicted total freeway clogging; and forget the whole thing by the next day.
I mentioned earlier there are at least three basic forces upsetting the impending evacuation of Houston-land:
- Design Failure
- Design Failure
- Design Failure
...and an unprincipled, dodgy knack Houston-land-Estonians’ have of never learning from their mistakes, uncanny as this all seems. >Pd out
