MooPig Tech Coroner :: "Pacific Ocean, PART 2"

"After we left Japan it felt as if the ocean itself was dead,'' Macfadyen says.
Retrieved by Pat Darnell  |  Oct 26, 2013  |  Bryan TX

[Picture LINK] Photo: Lindsey Hoshaw
"I've done a lot of miles on the ocean in my life and I'm used to seeing turtles, dolphins, sharks and big flurries of feeding birds. But this time, for 3000 nautical miles there was nothing alive to be seen. (GREG RAY. Oct. 18, 2013. LINK)"
The ocean is broken | Newcastle Herald: EXCERPT  |  " ... The wind still whipped the sails and whistled in the rigging. The waves still sloshed against the fibreglass hull. And there were plenty of other noises: muffled thuds and bumps and scrapes as the boat knocked against pieces of debris.

" ... What was missing was the cries of the seabirds which, on all previous similar voyages, had surrounded the boat. The birds were missing because the fish were missing.

" ... Exactly 10 years before, when Newcastle yachtsman Ivan Macfadyen had sailed exactly the same course from Melbourne to Osaka, all he'd had to do to catch a fish from the ocean between Brisbane and Japan was throw out a baited line. ... "

CONCLUSION
No fish, no turtles, no teaming gaggle of birds, no whales, no life... EQUALS... a dead Pacific Ocean. Every so often we at MooPig mourn the passing of a technology that has gone by the wayside due to modern, supply side driven technologies. Today, we mourn the passing of a very large technical part of the earth -- the Pacific Ocean. It has been polluted to its breaking point by civilization who does it in the name of "clean energy:" in the name of "security:" and in the name of "progress."

" ... What is the greatest threat to humanity? We are, of course….and our technology. Like a dangerous weapon in the hands of a child, technology has overtaken our capacity to control potential consequences. Oxford University’s Future of Humanity Institute, led by director Nick Bostrom, says we have entered this new kind of technological era that we have no track record of surviving.

Our technological intelligence may have the potential for creating a better world, but so far, in areas of the economy, genetics and biologics, arms and warfare, security and surveillance, as well as the environment and energy, technology is also completely indifferent to the law of unintended consequences.

Fukushima is what happens when we have the moral responsibility of infants and the technology of adults. (Dr Caldicott. March, 2011. LINK)... "

MooPig Dancing With the Whales Department :: "Whale Eyes"

Bryant Austin, In the Eye of the Whale
Snagged by Pat Darnell | Apr 11, 2013 | Bryan TX

[Pictures LINK]

You're Eye-to-Eye With a Whale in the Ocean. What Does It See? - Alexis C. Madrigal - The Atlantic: "Why is it disturbing? Because, as Austin puts it, the whale challenges him "to reevaluate our perceptions of intelligent, conscious life on this planet." This mammal's eye -- lens, cornea, pupil, retina, photoreceptors and ganglion nerve cells -- is a direct passageway into its brain. And when we look at it, Austin can't help but see an intelligence there, a connection to a brain that, perhaps, works enough like ours for us to understand each other."

MooPig Activism :: The Real Costs of Profiteering

Consequences are Deep; the Perpetrators are Shallow
Retrieved by Pat Darnell at Matthew Bach/faceBook  |  Mar 21, 2013  |  Bryan TX

When this war dragged on past Dubya Bush's speech when he said the US has prevailed in the Battle of Iraq; his speech given from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, it awoke a beast in me. I did not know that I would have such hatred for a president as I did on that day. Now years later, in the wake of our Iraqi occupation, I think Dubya was standing on the stern of the carrier. He must have been preaching to the seagulls on the fan tail.

Whatever he was doing, turned out to be a lot of barking at the wind. Dubya Bush is a lunatic, and living proof that privilege allows men to go free even when they are mass murderers.

A dying Iraq veteran pays his last respects to the men and women who killed him.

Dangerous Minds | Dying vet’s ‘fuck you’ letter to George Bush & Dick Cheney needs to be read by every American:

To: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
From: Tomas Young
EXCERPT  |  " I write this letter on behalf of us all—the human detritus your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief. I write this letter, my last letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power. I write this letter because, before my own death, I want to make it clear that I, and hundreds of thousands of my fellow veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done. "

When we find these "Internet" derivations of fact, we are as wary as anybody that it is possibly the work of imagination. But we find this letter expressing many Americans' heart felt opinions of what has happened.

If the letter is a knock-off, well, even so, it should still be regarded as a declaration of independence from the misogyny, hegemony, dilettantism, dreck, and confusion brought on by privileged progeny of rich, bombastic, war profiteers:

at Letter EXCERPT | " ... You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole. ... "

Oooorah!

Dan Froomkin - Bush Thumbs Nose at Congress

We're going to go out on a Limb, but, 'Dubya' Bush was a Sneaky Bast*rd
Not PC, Re-framed by Pat Darnell | Dec 29, 2012 | Bryan TX
[Picture LINK]

Dan Froomkin - Bush Thumbs Nose at Congress:
In 2008 the Democrats controlled the House, and 'Dubya' Bush thumbed his nose at them. He conveniently abused his power to ignore certain protocols of legislation that were put in place to balance powers of Houses and Executive, especially in spending for military bases and for declarations of war.
" ... It's about as basic as it gets: Congress has the power of the purse. And Section 1222 of the massive defense appropriation bill enacted this week [Wednesday, January 30, 2008] asserts that power. It reads, in its entirety:

"No funds appropriated pursuant to an authorization of appropriations in this Act may be obligated or expended for a purpose as follows:

"(1) To establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing for the permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq.

"(2) To exercise United States control of the oil resources of Iraq."  ( Dan Froomkin. washington post. Wednesday, January 30, 2008; HERE) ... "
    'via Blog this'
What Dubya did was to not veto any bills from the Democratic led Congress. He signed all the bills and invited all the authors to a grandiose signing photo op ... then afterwards he made Executive Notes called: "signing statements" on those bills. He did not intend to follow much of those bills. What a ruse, eh?
" ... But it's Bush's cavalier dismissal of the ban on funding for permanent military bases that really speaks volumes -- not just about his view of the role of the legislative branch, but also about his intentions for Iraq. ... " (ibid.)
All we at MooPig Political Round Ball Department can figure is that 'Dubya' Bush wanted it to look like he was actually working, when in fact " ... Calls to several Presidential libraries reveal that President Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, was on vacation more — 1,020 days — than any U.S. President since Herbert Hoover and possibly more than any other President in history. (Lauren Victoria Burke. May 08, 2012. HERE)... "

Bush's surreptitious scheme to "quietly assert his right to ignore legislation passed by Congress – including its ban on torture – first came to light in January [2006] due to some aggressive reporting by Boston Globe reporter Charlie Savage. (Charlie Savage, Globe Staff | January 4, 2006)"
" ... January 4, 2006

WASHINGTON -- When President Bush last week signed the bill outlawing the torture of detainees, he quietly reserved the right to bypass the law under his powers as commander in chief. (ibid.) ... "
CONCLUSION
'Dubya' Bush set precedence that others will surely follow. He was a lazy, anti-democracy, evil-doer, bully, who was raised in Washington, DC environment by his "public servant" dad.

MooPig is sorry that it could not break the codes of the past better while it parlayed through the Bush lame duck years.

We failed you, our faithful reader.

Miss UNIVERSE

and, Bahamas, Beatles, Dubya Bush, and Obamas
by Pat Darnell

TeleMundo has your ticket to Miss Universe on the island of the Bahamas 2009. Go ahead, dive in. Login and vote for the Miss Universe Crown for 2009.

Speaking of Universe -- If you haven't viewed Across the Universe yet,

"The music of the Beatles and the Vietnam War form the backdrop for the romance between an upper-class American girl and a poor Liverpudlian artist. (IMDb Pro; 2007)"

Synopsis :: [ ... ] Max, the charming and outgoing student from earlier, is on a roof with a few of his buddies as they chip golf balls off of a beer bottle at the nearby dormitory windows.

After a few misses, he finally connects - and the group flees the angry mob that spills out of the dorm. Jude, seeing the commotion while out having a cigarette in front of the building that his father is letting him stay in, lets Max slip in to hide. Grateful, Max invites Jude to go out for the night with himself and his golfing buddies.

While proclaiming that they get by "With a Little Help From My Friends," they smoke and drink their way through town until they finally collapse on couches from exhaustion.

Speaking of hitting golf balls off beer bottles from the roof and collapsing on couches from exhaustion -- Dubya Bush wasn't getting a shoe thrown at him, he was just ordering "Lunch" :: Dubll meat, horseradish and can of spinach walking Sub Sandwich ... why all the hipe?

Meanwhile, our story is interspersed with Beatle Songs: [ ... ] Jude hides from the police, and after being left alone on the roof, starts singing "All You Need Is Love" into the microphone. Sadie, JoJo, Prudence, Max, and the rest all rush back up to the roof, and join in. Lucy hears Jude's voice, and frantically rushes to get into the building, only to be stopped by the police. She turns, and runs to a building across the street, and stares at Jude from the roof across the way.She smiles as a tear runs down her cheek. Jude sighs. Together in the end, they kiss as "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" plays during the end credits. (Excerpt updated by RogueCrewX, 2 months ago ...Contributors: eegyecats, cricharddavies, RogueCrewX, normall, hookedonkong: retreived HERE)

Speaking of "Kiss the Girl," the Obama's are going to vacation like Kennedys. They will soon invade Martha's Vineyard for a little whale watching; rest and relaxation.

Despite Hurricane Bill all of the Obama entourage will be a showcase at the Vineyard, as islanders roll out the cuisine, and a good old "American Cliff Hanger."

I'm comfortable with that... aren't you? Good Day! [pdnf]

Whale Fin Drag

Retrieved by PD and School

"Mr. Colani ignores these facts"

I'd be surprised if Colani merely ignored facts considering he studied aerospace engineering and once worked for McDonnell-Douglas. While I might be mistaken, I recall reading that he's also included in a patent covering inverted airfoil-shaped racing cars (thus improving high-speed traction/handling). He certainly doesn't follow conventional thinking, but then neither did the Wright brothers.

I will agree with the "shape is critical" part. However, recent breakthroughs relating to drag on the fins of whales suggest that Colani could have gotten quite a bit wilder with his shapes. I'm relatively certain my aerospace professors would have categorically dismissed whale fin-inspired shapes; and they would have been wrong to do so. We'll have to see what comes of those developments (though we should see wind-turbines with "tubercles" from Whalepower Inc fairly soon).

I recall seeing all these designs while an industrial design student. Still inspiring.

Whales, Dolphins Inspire Wind Turbine Tech
Jessica Marshall, Discovery News

July 11, 2008 -- Whales' and dolphins' speed and agility are wondrous to behold -- finely tuned by evolution for efficiency and maneuverability in the water. Now researchers are working to translate these animals' natural innovations into manmade technologies on land, air and sea.

Frank Fish of West Chester University in Pennsylvania began to study the humpback whale fin while on vacation in Boston in the early 1980s, where he saw a statue of a humpback whale in a shop in Quincy Market. He assumed it was sculpted incorrectly, because the figure showed bumps along the front edge of the flipper.

"It just didn't make sense," Fish said. One of the cardinal lessons of fluid mechanics is that the leading edge of a fin or wing needs to be smooth to create the flow that provides lifting force. [SOURCE]
