Malaria claims the lives of a million people a year. Bill and Melinda Gates have been in the news, since Bill retired from Microsoft, as philanthropists "out to eradicate malaria." But wait!

The Varsity » First year Univ of Toronto student develops new treatment for malaria: "Jessie MacAlpine is a first-year life sciences student who has developed a treatment for malaria. She has filed for a patent on the treatment, and she plans to facilitate its distribution so as to maximize access to it. MacAlpine’s project, Mustard Oil as an Apicomplexan-targeting Drug Therapy for Plasmodium falciparum, was extraordinarily successful at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where she won Best of Category for Medicine and Health Sciences. Most recently, MacAlpine was the Canadian ambassador at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists, where she won the International Cooperation Prize."

I think Bill and Melinda Gates are the new Jesse Jacksons of Global Business. They are going to get you to pay for vaccination of their young'un's and do it by 2015. Good or bad, it will be the way of Gate's.

I have been trying to read through this "Annual Letter" all morning... I read a bit ... then I get really tic'd off ... and asking myself "why am I so mad."

William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American programmer, inventor, business magnate and philanthropist. It is the same year I was born, 1955. And "BLIMEY" ... blaaahhh blaaaah sic blah!

From Gate's Annual Letter:

"...We're also not on track to meet one of the most critical goals-reducing the number of children who die under the age of five by two-thirds. We've made substantial progress. The number of children who die has declined from nearly 12 million in 1990 to 6.9 million in 2011. While that means 14,000 fewer children around the world are dying every day than in 1990, we won't reach the two-thirds target by 2015...."

Me and my wife spend all our time day in and day out trying to keep our six kids alive. What is the deal with Gates going to Ethiopia and gathering information on infant death? Hunh? Scooby Doo could do that without spending a billion, plus or minus. I am afraid we have giant morons from America going in all sorts of directions and creating mass confusion.

It is like this in my mind: The philanthropist leaning elite go out into the world, see some mess somewhere, and over-state the obvious. Sure we need to end poverty, female abuse, and child/infant mortality. But as the model for accomplishing this comes about we find nations saying: "We are in on these MDG's" while they haven't a penny in their coffers. So, you guessed it, all the funds come from the USA.

From the Gate's Annual Letter is this bit:

" ...I remember the disturbing images from Ethiopia of the 1980s when more than one million people died in a famine that swept through the Horn of Africa. It was a tragedy brought to the world’s attention by the 1985 Live Aid concert and part of a long period of war, political unrest, and instability for Ethiopians. Their country ranked near the bottom on nearly every key health indicator, including child mortality. ibid.) ... "

And ...

" ... When Ethiopia signed on to the MDGs in 2000, the country put hard numbers on its health ambitions. The concrete MDG goal of reducing child mortality by two-thirds created a clear target for success or failure. Ethiopia's commitment to the MDGs attracted unprecedented amounts of donor money to help improve its primary health care services. (ibid.)... "

Read this please as " ...Unprecedented amounts of donor money ... from the USA. ..."

The MDG's we speak of are the goals that the UN proposed in 2000, to be achieved by nations by the year 2015. You all have had some introduction to that over the years. Like all the other stuff the UN does, most everyone thought these MDG's would be filed away and forgotten. "Not so," says the letter writer.

Government organizations assist in achieving those goals, among them are the United Nations Millennium Campaign, the Millennium Promise Alliance, Inc., the Global Poverty Project, the Micah Challenge, The Youth in Action EU Programme, "Cartoons in Action" video project, and the 8 Visions of Hope global art project. "Hey, Guys, I still don't feel a sense of achievement! I mean, I don't feel a warm fuzzy about those MDG's."

" ... "We have 1,000 days to reach our Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Now is the time to finish the job by accelerating progress," United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on the margins of the African Union Summit. Important successes have been observed in education and health targets, however, millions remain affected by poverty. In his address to Heads of State and Governments at the summit, the Secretary-General noted that success with accelerating the MDGs, "will depend on ownership by governments and civil society." So, reader, you must think I am some kind of monster for not laying down a path of praise for the Gates and United Nations' dudes and dudettes. If you wish, you may make that assumption. I just really wish some of these mega-maniacs would lay down their collective egos and go out in the field, like Jimmy Carter does, and actually do something; like work with their own hands.

In humans, parasites called sporozoites travel to the liver, where they mature and release another form, merozoites. These enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells. [SOURCE]

[Malaria] is a major health problem in much of tropics and subtropics. CDC estimates that there are 300-500 million cases of malaria each year, and more than 1 million people die. It presents a major disease hazard for travelers to warm climates.

Most people living in areas where malaria is common have acquired some immunity to malaria disease. Symptoms are High fevers, shaking chills, flu-like symptoms, and anemia.

Visitors will not have immunity, and should take preventive medications. It is important to see your health care provider well before your trip, because treatment may begin 2 weeks before travel to prone to malaria areas, and continue for a month after you leave the areas. The types of anti-malarial medications prescribed will depend on the area you visit.

According to the CDC, travelers to South America, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Asia, and the South Pacific should take one of the following drugs: mefloquine, doxycycline, choroquine, hydroxychoroquine, or Malarone.

Falciparum malaria is becoming increasingly resistant to anti-malarial medications.

Persons are urged to " ... Call your health care provider if you develop fever and headache after visiting the tropics.  ..."

The Gates Foundation has poured about $1.2 billion into malaria research since 2000. In the late 1990s, as little as $84 million a year was spent - largely by the U.S. military and health institutes, along with European governments and foundations. Drug makers had largely abandoned the field. China was developing a drug, artemisinin, that is now the cornerstone of treatment. [SOURCE]

The WHO, World Health Organization, is a United Nations agency with a $4 billion budget. It gives advice on policies, evaluates treatments - especially for poor countries - maintains a network of laboratories and sends teams to fight outbreaks of diseases, like avian flu or Ebola. It finances little research; for diseases of the poor, the Gates Foundation is the biggest donor in the world.

A typical case of malaria started with shivers down the spine, then fluctuating fevers for days. According to clinical records, doctors used a variety of treatments for malaria, but whiskey and quinine were standard treatment.

Some Yankee patients were given so much quinine that their teeth became loose and they were not able to eat.

When drugs became scarce in the South, doctors substituted tonics made from whiskey mixed with barks of dogwood, tulip and willow trees.

During the Civil War people believed malaria was caused by poisonous vapors emanating from ponds and swamps. While many men noted in their diaries swarms of mosquitoes that attacked during warmer months, and ensuing sickness that enveloped the camp, they never put the two together.

I thought it was a new nickname for Bill Clinton. I realize after being president and all, there is some desire to go into other fields, if one still has his health, mental and otherwise. Jimmy Carter became a philanthropist of highest order, right up there with Mother Teresa; Habitat for Jimmy, a habit for Mother T.

We do have people we admire, and well Bill is most admired for tempting treason while he deflowered interns with his cigar in the Oval Office. Now that may be rampaging patriotic, and bold, and Jeffersonian... but it does lend a certain taint on a Philanthropic Career from the outset. Bill Clinton is second only to himself and the re-invention of the stimulus that will unlock the blockage up there in the colon of America, Washington, DC, that is. But really:

Stimulus Bill is actually a 2009 A.O., After Obama, law by Barry Obama, paced to bring the financial world back online after its collective vacation taking, eating rich food from foreign lands, and achieving swelling around the ankles not before seen in this hemisphere...

What Me Worry? ...comic relief glances by Bill Clinton are not warranted. Once a person is given the ignoble task of throwing around Solomon's wealth for eight years, long range is the dubious end to that. Long range gathers around the source of dismal planning like the storm of the century. In engineering... let's see we used to call it... Piss Poor Previous Planning, 4P, that is.

To keep bridges from falling, and cities from flooding, a bigger picture lies in waiting to be viewed if not by transient politicians. In USA it seems Americans plan for the 90 day cycle. In other places like the Orient, the plan is 50 years at a time. In Japan there has been recession since the late 1980's. How do you suppose they conquer almost twenty years of recession, and maintain 7 automobile manufacturers?

Japan as a collective culture has the mindset of a long term existence. While Americans are trying to find a way to sweep under the rug the extra 22% finance charges accruing in their credit card accounts every 25 days... Japanese practice a low tech method of saving 40% of their gross pay to bolster their high tech industry. That's how: forty centavos on the dollar e.

Not so much unlike living in a bubble like Japanese do, we Americans are trading off our self-respect, causing the bubble to surround us regardless, "distracted by a heavy bloated feeling."

The Constipation of the United States of America

We all have a picture in mind of how life ought to be. Perhaps it is not so much a picture; but rather, a strong inkling of what life in America should feel like if all was well and things were running along smoothly. In any case, no matter how each of us perceives that blissful state of being, it is obvious that we are not experiencing it.

Life moves on, of course, and by outward appearances we are living as we always have. The alarm goes off; we clean up and head for work or school, each with a uniquely personal measure of enthusiasm. There is lunch, some afternoon drowsiness, and soon another day is in the bag.

Yet, there is something different today. It is a feeling of not being quite right; not precisely on top of the game. Our daily grind is faced with a bit less energy, a little less bounce in our step, and an extra glance or two over the shoulder. When we sit back and ponder the future, we are distracted by a heavy bloated feeling that hinders us from reveling in our dreams.

Read the Constitution; Article 1, Section 8. If you can find a specifically enumerated (that means 'written down' for you public school kids) power, then Congress has the right to get involved.

Jesus for President: should get the Evangelical Base Vote... eh?

People pack churches to hear Shane Claiborne talk about "Jesus for President," the book he co-authored.

The dreadlocked Christian activist from Philadelphia and his team parked a black school bus around the back. The hand-painted gold letters on the side read "Jesus for President."

The bus runs on vegetable oil and, yes, it's a political statement.

"It'll be a long time before we fight a war over used veggie oil," says Claiborne with a sly smile.

Claiborne is touring the country, packing churches and community centers, in support of the book he and Chris Haw co-authored, "Jesus for President."

"This whole project is about the political imagination of what it means to follow after Jesus," Claiborne said. "The language of Jesus as Lord and savior is just as radical as it would be to say 'Jesus as our commander in chief' today."

About 26 percent of the United States identifies itself as evangelical Christians in the Protestant tradition, according to the latest U.S. Religious Landscape study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. In 2004, more than 75 percent of evangelicals cast their vote for George W. Bush.

"They delivered for him in some key states, like Ohio, without which he could not have won," said CNN's Bill Schneider, senior political analyst. "It was the rallying of the evangelical base that Karl Rove developed as a strategy, maximizing turnout among your base voters, not worrying about independents or swing voters."

But polls have shown that evangelicals as a whole, following national trends, are disaffected with Republican leadership and increasingly up for grabs.

Thursday was the fifth night of the tour and it has already seen hundreds show up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Indianapolis, Indiana.

It was a hot, muggy June day in Pittsburgh. About 250 people came through the doors to find there was no air conditioning in the old church-turned-community center. They ran out of chairs so people took to the floors and leaned against the walls.

There were voters from across the board: Republicans, Democrats and independents. Most were young, Christian by background, evangelical in theology, and they say they're hungry for something more than partisan politics.

Funding to be Provided in receipt of its Rebate from Microsoft; pending litigations filed in the spirit of conjecture for compensations provided for in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation from 1994 - 2045, blah 'd blah 'd blah 'd

"Yeah, we decided to just give it all back.. of course we kept the interest," might have said Melinda Gates in a most likely pre-re-opening meeting over some future weekend. So goes the saga of twenty-first century King Solomon, Bill Gates, and his mag-significant other, Melinda.

It's 2008, January and Fortune Magazine is reporting from the mansion just above the Gates Way to MSN copper mines of Legend. Somewhere in Washingtoniana...

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had assets of $37.6 billion at end of 2007. Bill Gates just said his usual: "'Yes, we're a couple that has fun discussing fertilizer while we walk on the beach,' Bill says proudly. 'Melinda is more scientific and reads more than 99% of the people you'll ever meet,' he says" (Sellers, Patricia. January 21, 2008, FORTUNE: Melinda gates goes public. pg 44-56).

The cryptic couple apparently reviews annually around 6000 grant requests together in their chairman's office at Microsoft. The Gates Criteria for turning on a flow meter of cash to a worthy cause? "...Early on she and Bill agreed to focus on a few areas of giving, choosing where to place their money by asking two questions:

1. 'Which problems affect the most people?



2. 'And which have been neglected in the past?'" (pg 47-48)

[this is where natural snooping and curio put moopig on the $-scent for a grand-re-opening]

1. MooPig is ambiguously problematic for at least thousands, and



2. MooPig has been neglected for all of its life, past and future!

FORTUNE's Philanthropy section states: "Bill surprised Melinda on New Years Day, 1994 by arranging for Willie Nelson to perform just for them at their marriage that day." Then apparently they proceded to just-right-size their bridal house. It is reported 40,000 square feet of newlywed horror, back then: "It was a bachelor's dream and a bride's nightmare. So the bride took control and performed nu'veau riche surgery, 'If I do move in ...it's going to be like I want it to be,' said she [Melinda]" (Housing Crisis, Pg 56, paraphrased).

Melinda and Bill have a philanthropy jones: "I'm in wholesale. I'm not retail," says Bill. (pg 56) While Melinda says "A very rich person should leave his kids enough to do anything, but not enough to do nothing," per Warren Buffet's philosophy. This translates into "giving 95% of their fortune away within their lifetimes," says Fortune. [See also: Warren Buffet's bequest in same article, pg 54]

MooPig, sitting right here, says "Huh?"

"'My fatal flaw?' Melinda says laughing during [FORTUNE's] third and final interview. She sometimes wishes for a simpler life" (pg 56). We the editors at MooPig speculate she wants the simpler life 5% of the time, and goes for the Queen of Philanthropy 95% of the time. [See Also: Ima Hogg, Hogg Philanthropy]

I submit locked in this story is the Hilton Syndrome that follows nouveau riche throughout history. Poor Bill and Melinda. And what about their children? Can Melinda plan for the ensuing spouses of her children? Will her daughters all marry one-legged veterans of foreign wars, in support of the cause? MooPig asks the hard questions. So how does this interview end? "She [Melinda] was giving herself a pep talk. 'I told myself , "But I do know enough."' She [had] completed her goal for the day: calling for the eradication of one of the worst diseases the world has ever known [malaria]. Tomorrow another goal. Maybe it will be even bigger."

Even though all is fair in war and philanthropy, and even though I could not be having this orgy of opinionated moink pig latin in here via the Internet without Microsoft, and even though metaphor is mightier than the pen is... I think Melinda's fatal flaw is "Brown pant suits," and the worst disease in our world is "nouveau riche philanthropy, along with the first signs of incontinence."

"'Bill is an awkward guy,' says Warren Buffet, a close friend of the couple. 'He's lopsided, but less lopsided since he's with Melinda.'" (pg 54)
