Suggestions? We have been under siege for too long. It is time to brighten up things. We can start with our bedroom, and work outward to the other rooms. Is that a plan?
I always go to Benjamin Moore for paint, call me old fashion. I fell in love with Ben Moore paints when I lived up north in Glenview. Also, I used Cabot Stains for the exteriors, like siding and door thresholds, with a little Penetrol added. Benjamin Moore Impervo Alkyd High Gloss Enamel is suitable for both exterior and interior surfaces. So I trimmed the exterior with Impervo, -- funny name I know.
When painting, it is best to use top of the line, because, like I said, we have not painted or remodeled since we moved into this place. So you want a paint that can penetrate the surfaces, and last for a decade or two.

We must be working the psychic mind wave again PD. B and I just got back from the title company and closed on the house. We must be out of here by the first (Sunday)...gigs Friday and Saturday...hectic.
However, even with all the swirling madness of stress, the little lady has already been having visions of painting the interior as pride of ownership syndrome has kicked in.
I, having painted a few things in my years will agree with your statement: "Do it yourself, and it will hurt twice a much. But it's worth it." But, I will say that the "hurt" part for me is more in the choosing paint stage than the actual act. I can get used to most any color in most any room.
The other night, after a pleasant meal, we went to a big box home improvement store...I'm never patient in these places but, the paint section is excruciating. And now, thanks to you, after a good chunk of my life that I can never get back looking at Valspar, including, and this should blow your mind, the consideration of a shade called "Woodrow Wilson Putty"), my little buttercup now must go see what Benjamin Moore has to offer...thanks again and, I must add that your advice about using top shelf paint is spot on, I will be signing off for a couple of days as we sort stuff out.
I made friends with in a local paint shop worker, Nancy at Chapman's paint store. She is one of the self-educated color specialists ... and she doesn't mind all my whining.
We work out colors using the Ben Moore "extensive" color boards. It is like two cardinals discussing the edibility of a lame cicada on the ground.
