MooPig Storm Tracking Department :: Hurricane Name, IRENE, Removed from List

[Picture AFP\GETTY LINK] Cut off: Damaged power lines burn in Nags Head on Saturday as Hurricane Irene hits the northern Outer Banks of North Carolina 28 August 2011.

Do You Remember Irene?
by Pat Darnell | Apr 15, 2012 | Bryan TX

I didn't; because it didn't affect the Gulf Coast. But till this morning I also didn't know that namer's of storms often retire certain storm names. And that is the report today. "Irene" is retired. According to AP "... -- Irene is being retired from the list of storm names because the 2011 hurricane killed 49 people and caused more than $15 billion in damage ..." (AP, Miami. Apr 13, 2012, 11:28 AM EDT. LINK)

Irene was the hurricane that skated along the Eastern seaboard last year. Report on some of it can be found HERE: MooPig's Own Irene Watch ... that is from August 28, 2011.  It was an unusual storm because it hit the Carolina coasts and regions up through southern New England with torrential rain and strong winds. Those regions seldom get hurricanes. See the maps HERE.

Looks like we made out relatively unscathed. The most intense winds were last night, and it looks like the storm has lost interest in Central Jersey.

Comment:
James Patterson Ahem, I beg to differ with you. You did not make out unscathed. You spent 125 dollars at the grocery store, 75 dollars at the hardware store and 400 dollars at the liquor store. A 600 dollar damage bill is hardly unscathed. However, you do have the benefit of getting royally drunk this afternoon and laughing at your neighbor as he takes the boards off his house... Dude.

Igor Eyes Bermuda

Hurricane Igor in the Atlantic

[SOURCE]
(CNN) " ... The hurricane is currently going through an "eyewall replacement cycle," and, during this time, accurately forecasting its track becomes more difficult, said Fritz [CNN meteorologist Angela Fritz].

A new eye begins to develop around the old eye of a hurricane during the replacement cycle.
"Fortunately, the forecast is that Igor will not strengthen more before approaching Bermuda. It is expected to maintain Category 2 status," Fritz added.

The weather agency said swells will affect the East Coast of the United States, Puerto Rico, the Leeward Islands, Hispanola and parts of the Bahamas over the weekend.

"These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents," the Hurricane Center said.
As of 5 p.m. Saturday, ET, Igor was about 360 miles (580 km) south of Bermuda, packing sustained winds of about 100 mph (160 kph) as it headed northwest at 14 mph (22 kph). Hurricane-force winds extend up to 90 miles (150km) from the center.

HURRICANE Earl will find its way along a projected path to North Carolina sometime Wednesday, if projected paths for hurricanes are possible.
"Any small shift in the track could dramatically alter whether it makes landfall or whether it remains over the open ocean," said Wallace Hogsett, a meteorologist at the center. "I can't urge enough to just stay tuned."

theeagle dot com, Bryan-College Station, TX  |  " ... Weather officials said a tropical storm heading toward Brownsville on Monday could bring heavy rain and isolated tornadoes to the Brazos Valley area by Wednesday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Blood said there is a 25 to 30 percent chance the Bryan-College Station area will be impacted.

"There's a chance we'll be affected by the outer bands of Tropical Storm Alex," Blood said, adding that the storm is "definitely on the radar" for area forecasters.

Weather officials said the tropical storm was about 535 miles from Brownsville Monday, and Blood said there is a chance the outer bands of the storm could hit south Texas on Wednesday or Thursday.

Blood said the main threats if the outer bands of the storm hit the Brazos Valley would be heavy rain and isolated tornadoes. ... "

Hurricane watch for Mexico, and U.S., as Alex strengthens
By MIGUEL ANGEL HERNANDEZ

VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico -- Hurricane watches were in effect Monday for a stretch of Gulf coast in southern Texas and northern Mexico as Tropical Storm Alex gained strength and appeared on track to become a Category 3 hurricane before it makes landfall later this week.

Forecasters said the storm's path could push oil from the massive Gulf oil spill farther inland.
Alex was swirling through the Gulf of Mexico with winds of 60 mph (95 kph) on a path that would take it very near the Mexico-U.S. border sometime Thursday, said the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. The storm is expected to become a hurricane Tuesday, and could build winds as high as 120 mph (193 kilometers) by Wednesday.

Tropical storm-force winds extended up to 70 miles (110 kilometers) from the storm's center Monday, and Alex was moving slowly to the northwest.

Heavy rains in the southern Gulf coast state of Tabasco forced the evacuation of about 300 families from communities near the Usumacinta river.

Hurricane Ike UPDATE
by Pat Darnell [SOURCE]

Texas Gov. Rick Perry of Texas issued a disaster declaration and activated 7,500 National Guard troops, according to the New York Times, and residents and workers in Brazoria County south of Houston were ordered to leave by 10 this morning.

Ike, which killed 80 people in Haiti and Cuba when it barreled through those islands over the weekend, is a Category 2 hurricane with winds near 100 miles per hour (155 kilometers per hour), according to the weather service. It will become a "major hurricane" in the next 24 hours, the agency said -- possibly strengthening to a Category 3 storm.

[2nd SOURCE]
Ike is still being steered by a strong upper-level high that extends across the northern Gulf of Mexico and the Deep South of the United States. This ridge should remain in place through Friday and keep Ike on a west to west-northwest course through Thursday. Conditions will be favorable for intensification over the next 24-36 hours as water temperatures along Ike's projected track are at least 82 degrees and wind shear remains relatively weak. Ike is a large hurricane with a small central core and strong winds extend far away from the eye.

Ike's surface pressure fell rapidly Wednesday evening, but the surface winds have not rapidly responded to these pressure falls which may indicate that Ike still has to consolidate its energy toward the center of circulation and then perhaps strengthen from the center outward. Once this happens then Ike should increase to Category 3 strength, perhaps as early as midday Thursday.

Gustav -- UPDATE

Forecasters expect Hurricane Gustav to grow into a Category 3 hurricane and make landfall Monday or Tuesday on the Texas or Louisiana coast.

Weather watchers cautioned that the storm's track and intensity are difficult to predict this far in advance.

"We have a few days to wait and see," Frazier said.

If the hurricane aims for Louisiana, up to 50,000 evacuees could head for Texas, officials said.

"We know it's going to head into the Gulf. After that, we're not sure where it's heading," said Rebecca Waddington, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane may send evacuees to Brazos

New Orleans city officials were also using the days ahead of the storm to prepare, making plans for a mandatory evacuation of the city should a Category 3 or stronger hurricane come within 60 hours of the city.

Gustav formed Monday and came ashore Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane near the southern Haitian city of Jacmel, with top winds near 90 mph. It toppled palm trees and flooded the city's Victorian wooden buildings. The storm triggered flooding and landslides that killed at least 11 people in the Caribbean. It weakened into a tropical storm and appeared headed for Cuba, though is likely to grow stronger in the coming days by feeding on warm open water.
