Sometimes Neighborhoods make Sense

Have you ever wished that you cold live in a neighborhood that celebrated ideals that you hold dear? I have, and I wish it could happen. If I did live in a progressive neighborhood, full of street people, I would throw street parties, and have a neighborhood watch, and look for alternatives to being on the utility grids... eh... how about it?

Ideally, communities support like-minded citizens, and boost morale's. While some aspects of community do this ... it usually is accomplished by a spartan volunteer effort. I think we should throw some money at it and see how quick politicians line up to support the efforts.

This community "Hebden Bridge is on the Yorkshire side of the Pennine Hills. Not long ago, it was a small mill town producing wool and woollen goods. By the end of the sixties, the town was in bad shape. Shops were empty and blocks of terraced houses were being pulled down. ... 2010 marks 500 years of the Hebden Bridge. ... (LINK)"

Texas Colonias
Texas is home to more colonias residents than any other state. Approximately 500,000 Texans live in 2,300 colonia communities along the 1,248-mile stretch from Cameron County on the Gulf of Mexico to El Paso County in the west.

Most colonias people live without basic services taken for granted in the rest of the United States.

Las Lomas might resemble any of America's most impoverished rural areas, but along the border, the five recorded subdivisions that make up Las Lomas carry a special bureaucratic designation: "Colonias," the Spanish word for "neighborhood."

But the areas are growing fast. The population of Starr County, home to an estimated 55 colonias, has grown 13.8% in the past decade, from 53,597 to 60,968, according to Census data. Neighboring Hidalgo County, home to the most colonias in the state, has grown 36% since 2000, from 569,471 to 774,769.

Impoverished border town grows from shacks into community - CNN.com: "AandM is one of many agencies working in the colonias through various funding sources and partnerships to provide a multitude of services, from transporting residents to larger cities for medical care to building wind turbines and ceramic water filters. The university, which has 41 community resource centers concentrated on the border, is certified through the Department of Health Services to train and certify 'promotoras,' loosely translated as health advocates or community health leaders, to connect residents to services."

Glenview man charged with drug-induced homicide
Woman has died as a result of overdose

GLENVIEW, Ill.
Charges have been filed against a Glenview man authorities say administered illegal drugs to a woman who later died as a result of an overdose.

Cary M. Cohen, 23, of the 3800 block of Michael Lane, is charged with drug-induced homicide in the death of 21-year-old Laura Riley, of the 2700 block of Park Lane in Glenview.

On December 12, officers were called to a reported overdose at Cohen's home, police said.

When officers arrived, they found Riley unresponive, and called for an ambulance to transport her to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Cohen was scheduled to appear in bond court in Skokie on Wednesday.
