MooPig Public Service Announcements Department :: "Houston H1N1 Cases Confirmed"

Swine Flu wreaking Havoc in Houston
Correlated articles by Pat Darnell  |  Dec 21, 2013  |  Bryan TX

The Houston Chronicle is reporting deaths attributed to Swine Flu, or H1N1. Those interviewed encourage all to get their flu vaccination, the Flu Shot. Some of the deaths are a result of the flu affecting some men who are already weakened by significant underlying health conditions including hypertensive, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

[Picture LINK] In Japan however, the HEALTHY people will often times wear the mask to prevent from getting sick.

H1N1 confirmed in at least 3 Harris deaths - Houston Chronicle: "Test results returned Friday that showed the cause of death for three men, ages 45, 50 and 53, was the H1N1 influenza virus, said the agency's spokeswoman Tricia Bentley. One man died Nov. 28, another died the next day and the last man died on Dec. 9."

None of the patients who died had received a flu shot, the release said. The Flu Shot does cover this type of symptomatic flu, say the spokespersons.

"We'll wait and see what they find," Mann said, [Christine Mann, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of State Health Services] adding that the H1N1 virus, formerly known as swine flu, is the predominant strain this season, which started in September and typically runs until spring.

Mayo Clinic says this:
" ... Technically, the term swine flu refers to influenza in pigs. Occasionally, pigs transmit influenza viruses to people, mainly to hog farm workers and veterinarians. Less often, someone infected occupationally passes the infection to others.

The human respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus H1N1 — popularly known as swine flu — was first recognized in spring 2009, near the end of the usual Northern Hemisphere flu season. (Mayo Clinic Staff. Nov 6, 2013. LINK) ..."

Also, not all the studies have been completed on how the Flu Vaccination is doing. Early studies find there are few side affects, but more recent studies are finding some "interesting" reactions to the vaccine, HERE, such as cross-interactivity.

TAMU Swine FLU for TWO

Retrieved by Pat Darnell and the Circle Y

Published Thursday, June 11, 2009 6:08 PM by the Eagle Newspaper

2 A&M students tested for H1N1 virus

Two Texas A&M University graduate students may have the swine flu, officials said Thursday.

Authorities with the Department of Visualization, where the two students are enrolled, have canceled two classes in which the students were in that were set to meet on Thursday and Friday.

The cancellation of classes comes on the same day that the World Health Organization declared a swine flu pandemic — the first global flu pandemic in more than 40 years.

Tim McLaughlin, who is head of the Visualization department, said several students were sick last week. The father of a student in the class — who isn't sick — is a virologist with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and came to College Station this week to test the students for H1N1 virus, he said.

Two students’ results came back positive for the virus on Tuesday, he said.

“Because it seems to be able to spread fairly rapidly, we decided at that point to send them all home and get the classroom they were in cleaned,” Mclaughlin said.

The two students are among 22 mostly first-year students in the five-week and 10-week courses that were canceled, McLaughlin said. At least six other students as well as faculty and staff have regular contact with that group.

McLaughlin said Texas A&M officials are working with state health authorities to confirm the H1N1 cases.

“We’re working with the state to make sure they’re aware of what [the virologist] found,” he said.

McLaughlin said he expects classes to resume Monday, although faculty and staff are encouraging anyone who feels sick to stay home.

Brazos County Health Department had confirmed three local cases of swine flu by mid-May — the last date that agency released information about the flu.

Flu Outbreak Declared a Pandemic
posted:2 HOURS 22 MINUTES AGO | SOURCE

The World Health Organization declares a swine flu pandemic, the first official global flu outbreak in 41 years, as the worldwide total of cases nears 30,000. "The virus is now unstoppable," says WHO chief Margaret Chan.

FRANK JORDANS, AP [Complete Article HERE]

GENEVA (June 11) — [...]
The long-awaited pandemic announcement is scientific confirmation that a new flu virus has emerged and is quickly circling the globe. WHO will now ask drug makers to speed up production of a swine flu vaccine. The declaration will also prompt governments to devote more money toward efforts to contain the virus.

WHO chief Dr. Margaret Chan made the announcement Thursday after the U.N. agency held an emergency meeting with flu experts. Chan said she was moving the world to phase 6 — the agency's highest alert level — which means a pandemic, or global epidemic, is under way.
"The world is moving into the early days of its first influenza pandemic in the 21st century," Chan told reporters. "The (swine flu) virus is now unstoppable."

On Thursday, WHO said 74 countries had reported 28,774 cases of swine flu, including 144 deaths. Chan described the virus as "moderate." According to WHO's pandemic criteria, a global outbreak has begun when a new flu virus begins spreading in two world regions.

The agency has stressed that most cases are mild and require no treatment, but the fear is that a rash of new infections could overwhelm hospitals and health authorities — especially in poorer countries.

Still, about half of the people who have died from swine flu were previously young and healthy — people who are not usually susceptible to flu. Swine flu is also crowding out regular flu viruses. Both features are typical of pandemic flu viruses.

The last pandemic — the Hong Kong flu of 1968 — killed about 1 million people. Ordinary flu kills about 250,000 to 500,000 people each year.

New Virus Is Not Swine Flu Says Paris-Based Health Group

Posted by TSRN on April 29th, 2009 | Categorized as Breaking News, Conspiracy, Need To Know | Tagged as New Virus Is Not Swine Flu Says Paris-Based Health Group
The virus currently circulating in Mexico and the United States and which has killed at least 20 people is not swine flu, the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said Monday. (04-27-2009)

“The virus has not been isolated in animals to date. Therefore, it is not justified to name this disease swine flu,” the OIE said in a press statement.

The virus “includes in its characteristics swine, avian and human virus components,” the OIE said, and urged that it be called “North American influenza,” after its geographic origin.

The OIE said it was “urgent” that scientific research be carried out to determine the susceptibility of animals to what it said was a “new virus.”

WHO article continued...
If animals were susceptible, “virus circulation could worsen the regional and global situation for public health,” the organization said.
Swine flu is also continuing to spread during the start of summer in the northern hemisphere. Normally, flu viruses disappear with warm weather, but swine flu is proving to be resilient.

After Thursday's meeting, Chan said the experts agreed there was wider spread of swine flu than what was being reported.
[...]
WHO said it was now recommending that flu vaccine makers start making swine flu vaccine. Drug giant GlaxoSmithKline PLC said they could start large-scale production of pandemic vaccine in July but that it would take several months before large quantities would be available.
Many health experts say WHO's pandemic declaration could have come weeks earlier but the agency became bogged down by politics. In May, several countries urged WHO not to declare a pandemic, fearing it would cause social and economic turmoil.
[...]
Chile has the most swine flu cases in South America, and the southern hemisphere is moving into its winter flu season.

The U.S. government has already taken steps like increasing availability of flu-fighting medicines and authorizing $1 billion for the development of a new vaccine against the novel virus. In addition, new cases seem to be declining in many parts of the country, U.S. health officials say, as North America moves out of its traditional winter flu season.

Still, New York City reported three more swine flu deaths Thursday, including one child under two years.

In Mexico, where the epidemic was first detected, the outbreak peaked in April. Mexico now has less than 30 cases reported a day, down from an average of 300, Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova told The Associated Press. Mexico has confirmed 6,337 cases, including 108 deaths.
[...]
Many experts said the declaration of a pandemic did not mean the virus was getting deadlier.
"People might imagine a virus is now going to rush in and kill everyone," said John Oxford, a professor of virology at St. Bart's and Royal London Hospital. "That's not going to happen."

But Oxford said the swine flu virus might evolve into a more dangerous strain in the future. "That is always a possibility with influenza viruses," he said. "We have to watch very carefully to see what this virus does."

Mexico swine flu deaths spur global epidemic fears
By MARK STEVENSON Associated Press Writer © 2009 The Associated Press

MEXICO CITY — A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.

The worrisome new virus — which combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before — also sickened at least eight people in Texas and California, though there have been no deaths in the U.S.

"We are very, very concerned," World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham said. "We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human ... It's all hands on deck at the moment."

Closing schools across Mexico's capital of 20 million kept 6.1 million students home, as well as thousands of university students. All state and city-run cultural activities were suspended, including libraries, state-run theaters, and at least 14 museums. Private athletic clubs closed down and soccer leagues were considering canceling weekend games.

The closures were the first citywide shutdown of public gathering places since millions died in the devastating 1985 earthquake.

Mexico's response brought to mind other major outbreaks, such as when SARS hit Asia. At its peak in 2003, Beijing shuttered schools, cinemas and restaurants, and thousands of people were quarantined at home.

In March 2008, Hong Kong ordered more than a half-million students to stay home for two weeks because of a flu outbreak. It was the first such closure in Hong Kong since the outbreak of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome.

"It's great they are taking precautions," said Lillian Molina, a teacher at the Montessori's World preschool in Mexico City, who scrubbed down empty classrooms with Clorox, soap and Lysol between fielding calls from worried parents.

U.S. health officials said the outbreak is not yet a reason for alarm in the United States. The five people sickened in California and three in Texas have all recovered.

It's unclear how the eight, who became ill between late March and mid-April, contracted the virus because none were in contact with pigs, which is how people usually catch swine flu. And only a few were in contact with each other.
