MooPig Movie Reviews :: "Lincoln"

"Slavery, sir, is done..."
Perpetrated by Pat Darnell  |  Apr 5, 2013  |  Bryan TX

[PHOTO gif submitted by Pat2] ... The movie got mixed reviews, but mostly praised for its cinematic elegance. ... This photo is a "gif" of a device that keeps your camera motionless while you run with it. Annoying, eh?

In Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln,’ Passive Black Characters - NYTimes.com: "That, too, is the history of abolition; “Lincoln” is an opportunity squandered."

'via Blog this'

How much do you know about Daniel Day-Lewis? Eh? I don't know squat about Daniel. I do know something about ears though. As a man gets older his ears get larger, because they never cease to grow throughout his life.

Next chance you get, look at how huge Tommy Lee Jones's ears are. They're GIANT! I know, I know, he can't help that!

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was debated at several occasions to have Marfan's syndrome and also acromegaly. He grew to 6 ft. 4 inches in height and generally weighed less than 180 lb. Lincoln's body growth and energic constitution show gross evidence of pituitary hyperactivity and gonadal hypoactivity. He was a long, thin baby at birth, with unusually long, thin arms and legs. You will have to Google all these difficult words.

That is about as historically factual as we can get in this movie review. You, dear reader, will not gain any exacting Lincoln scuttlebutt today. We don't have any historians on deck here at MooPig Enterprises. We farm that out.

So we go to the Bonus Features on the DVD we rented at Red Box for 99 cents, plus tax. In the usual mention of Steven Spielberg, the making of Lincoln is prefaced with anecdote given by Mr. Spielberg. He remembers as a young lad going to the Lincoln Memorial; and walking up to the seated man at the top of the stairs.

Spielberg's imagery of the greatness of the memorial in his memorable youthful experience gives us a clue to what the movie is about: the giant white man who ended the Civil War, and signed into law the Thirteenth Amendment.

In Theaters: Nov 16, 2012
On DVD: Mar 26, 2013
Box Office:$182.0M
Dreamworks Pictures
PG-13, 2 hr. 29 min.
Drama
Directed By: Steven Spielberg

MooPig Movie Reviews Department is proud that they are not insiders in the cinema industry. We are so far afield... well, a good analogy is this quote from the movie, Daniel Day-Lewis says:
" ... Abraham Lincoln: A compass, I learnt when I was surveying, it'll... it'll point you True North from where you're standing, but it's got no advice about the swamps and dessert and chasm that you'll encounter along the way. If in pursuit of your destination, you plunge ahead, heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp... What's the use of knowing True North? ... "
In answer to what Thaddeus Stevens, played by Tommy Lee Jones, asks:
Thaddeus Stevens: You claim you can trust them. But you know what the people are. You know the inner compass that should direct the soul toward justice has ossified in white men and women, north and south, unto utter uselessness though tolerating the evil of slavery. White people cannot bear the thought of sharing this country's infinite abundance with Negroes.
This theme is the crux of the biscuit in real life ... the abject failure to "share" the abundance. But, that theme is never much dealt with in this movie. Blacks are more stoically portrayed as props, one liners, and altogether waiting in the wings for "white man" to "gift" them abolition of slavery in this movie. Too bad, too. With that wellspring of knowledge Spielberg's Lincoln could have remarkably transcended its boundaries.

Suggestion for when you watch the flick, you might want to turn on the subtitles so you can appreciate the American-English jargon spoken. It also helps the flow for you the patron, when actors and actresses muff and mumble their lines.

MooPig City Desk Department :: "Those Loathsome Republicans"

Self-loathing Seminars Available
Retrieved by Pat Darnell | Jan 20, 2013 | Bryan TX

[Picture LINK]

Obama won the popular vote with 65.9 million votes, or 51.1 percent, to Romney’s 60.9 million, or 47.2 percent, and won the Electoral College by a wide margin, 332-206 electoral votes.

There are other signs that Republican state legislators, governors and veteran political strategists are seriously considering making a shift, as the GOP looks to rebound from presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Electoral College shellacking and the demographic changes that threaten the party’s long-term political prospects.  (HERE)

Among the motivational speakers invited to address the retreat is Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind man to climb Mt Everest and thus the perfect person to inspire Republicans as they grope their way towards the heights of government. (HERE)

Republicans Retreat To Reassess and Figure Out How to Talk to Negroes and People With Lady Parts | Common Dreams: "Republican lawmakers have gathered in Williamsburg, Virginia to consider their political past (not so rosy) and future (not so rosy either), discuss topics from the debt ceiling and gun control to how to game the electoral college, and attend seminars titled "What Happened and Where Are We Now?" (good question!) ...

"How Is America Changing?" and "Successful Communication with Minorities and Women" - the last held in the Burwell Plantation Room, so named for a fine old slave-owning family, and located in the tony Kingsmill Resort, site of another fine old slave plantation.

Presumably, breakout sessions will include do's and don'ts on nappy hair and how to distinguish from illegitimate, oh-really-it's-nothing rape and actual, maybe-this-is-not-so-okay rape-rape, which the three white men and two women on the panel can hopefully figure out."

'via Blog this'

Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., who heads Republicans' campaign efforts, deflected a question regarding the irony of a panel trying to help the GOP woo minorities happening in a room named after a slave-owning family’s plantation.

"I don't pick the rooms we meet in," Walden said. "I know the Democrats have held their retreats here too and I assume you'll go and figure out if they ever held meetings in that same room."

When pressed on why there were three white men (half the group) on a panel regarding minority outreach Walden said, "Actually, I don't do this part of it, by the way, somebody can fill you in on all the names, but it is more than just three white guys on the panel, and it was filled out after that went to press."

Walden made known that minority outreach and recruiting minority House GOP candidates were a “top priority” and that the GOP had a “good message” for minorities but had suffered from a recent "bad communications." (Luke Russert and Frank Thorp, NBC News. 2 days ago. HERE)

[Picture LINK] ... The resort was once the Kingsmill Plantation.

Panels will take place in the resort’s “Burwell Plantation” room, named after the family that once owned the plantation. The luxury resort is now owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz, a conservative political donor.

Two years ago "Airport Scanners Can’t Tell Osama Bin Laden From Winona Ryder at Pat Dollard: "Airport face scanners ‘cannot tell the difference between Osama bin Laden and Winona Ryder’"
"Airport face scanners designed to verify travellers’ identity against their passport photographs are working at such a low level that they would be unable to tell the difference between Osama bin Laden and the actress Winona Ryder, it has been claimed."
