MooPig Earnings Tracking Department Presents :: "MACY'S" and "MADONNA"

Retail Update: Macy's announces net income ...
Published: August 12, 2010  |  Retrieved for Ed Porpoises by Pat Darnell

Macy's announces net income increase during second quarter
In particular, Macy's has greatly benefited from its localization plan, which puts decisions on what merchandise to stock closer to customers. It has also put more experienced workers on its sales floor.
" ... For example, Lundgren has said that Macy's added more career dresses and navy pumps at its Washington, D.C. store, a move that helped to boost sales. Washington, with a strong base of government workers, typically has shoppers with more conservative fashion tastes. (ANNE D'INNOCENZIO. AP Retail Writer) ... "

Its moderately priced fashion exclusives include the recently launched Material Girl, a teen line created by pop star Madonna and her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes. The line sells from $12 to $40.
NEW YORK — Macy's Inc.'s net income surged in the second quarter as the department store chain saw a payoff from its focus on exclusive moderate-price fashions and tailoring merchandise to local markets.

The Cincinnati-based company boosted its profit outlook and increased its forecast for a key revenue measure as it takes market share from rivals such as J.C. Penney.

Indications that Macy's will be a clear winner as the retail earnings season gets under way drove its stock up 79 cents, or 4.1 percent, to $20.18 in early afternoon trading.

The chain said Wednesday that it posted net income of $147 million, or 35 cents per share, for the period ended July 31. That compares with $7 million, or 2 cents per share, in the same period last year. Revenue rose 7.2 percent to $5.54 billion. For the quarter, revenue at stores open at least a year rose 4.9 percent. Revenue at those stores is considered a key measure of a retailer's health.

Abandoned Songs ... HUNHjh?

Beastie Boys, 'Fight for Your Right (to Party)'

It's hard to imagine the irony of this song being lost on anybody who's seen the caricatured gold-chained chumps partying in the accompanying video, but this song's ubiquity must have damaged the context. Not only do the Beasties say in the liner notes of 'The Sounds of Science' that the song "sucks," but Mike D laments that the guys pounding their fists and singing along "were oblivious to the fact that it was a goof on them."

Michael Stipe of R.E.M.

R.E.M., 'Shiny Happy People'

Michael Stipe talks as if he wishes he could abandon this song, but he's too loyal to his fans to completely disavow it. "I wouldn't say I'm embarrassed by the song, but it has limited appeal for me," he said, pointing out he meant it to be ironic commentary. To further the artistic misunderstanding, Stipe says he adapted the phrase "Shiny Happy People Holding Hands" from a Chinese propaganda poster issued just after the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Thom Yorke of Radiohead

Radiohead, 'Creep'

Most artists are glad to have a hit that will draw crowds to their shows, but when the crowd boos until that one song is played, it's bound to make musicians feel like machines. This is the apt metaphor 'Creep' auteur Thom Yorke chose when he wrote 'My Iron Lung,' which describes Radiohead being dependent on and almost incapacitated by the success of 'Creep': "This is our new song/Just like the last one/A total waste of time/My iron lung."

Bobby McFerrin

Bobby McFerrin, 'Don't Worry Be Happy'

McFerrin, a classically trained musician, wrote 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' in about an hour. The Grammy-winning song became so popular that George H. W. Bush used in his 1988 presidential campaign. "It's not that I don't love the song," says McFerrin. "My songs are like my children. Some you want around and some you want to send off to college as soon as possible." Now he conducts Mozart pieces.

Robert Plant

Robert Plant, 'Stairway to Heaven'

Led Zeppelin would possibly be back together if it weren't for "that bloody wedding song," as Robert Plant refers to 'Stairway.' He told the Los Angeles Times in 1988, "I'd break out in hives if I had to sing that song in every show. I wrote those lyrics and found that song to be of some importance and consequence in 1971, but 17 years later, I don't know. It's just not for me." And how about those Satanic back maskings, Mr. Plant?

Kurt Cobain

Nirvana, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'

The explosive success of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' made Nirvana rich and famous, so it was the likely culprit for Kurt Cobain, known for his anti-corporate slacker stance, to get sick of. He is quoted as calling the song a "sell-out" and told Rolling Stone that it was "almost an embarrassment to play it ... Everyone has focused on that song so much."

Sinead O'Connor

Sinead O'Connor, 'Nothing Compares 2 U'

Soon after this exquisitely sad song topped the charts, O'Connor was invited to meet its diminutive author Prince ... to disastrous result. She told the Mirror that their exchange ended with both expletives and punches thrown, and some spittle for good measure. "All I could do was spit. I spat on him quite a bit," she admitted. Years later, when fans at a 2005 concert shouted "Prince!" during an encore, Sinead snapped, "F--- that f---ing midget!"

France Gall

France Gall, 'Les Sucettes'

When Ms. Gall was 19, 'Les Sucettes' topped the French singles charts. It's literally about a little girl enjoying lollipops, but like Lil Wayne's similarly themed 'Lollipop,' there's a racy double-entendre in each lick. Unlike the young Weezy, the innocent Gall didn't understand the saucy meaning at the time she recorded it, and now she's so offended about being used by pop provocateur Serge Gainsbourg, who penned the tune, she won't ever sing it again. Who would've figured a Frenchwoman to be such a prude?

Madonna

Madonna, 'Like a Virgin'

There are divas, and then there are divas who are so diva, they can refuse to sing the songs that earned their diva status in the first place. Actually, there's only one, and her name is Madonna. "I'm not sure I can sing 'Holiday' or 'Like a Virgin' ever again," she told New York radio station Z100. "I just can't -- unless somebody paid me, like, $30 million or something. [Like if] some Russian guy wants me to come to the wedding he's going to have to a 17-year-old, you know it." They don't call her the Material Girl for nothin'.

Tom Petty

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, 'Don't Do Me Like That'

After years of struggling, it's a mixed blessing when you finally hit big with a leftover song from your previous band that someone made you record. Despite Petty's reluctance, producer Jimmy Iovine, persuaded him to record the five-year-old Mudcrutch song 'Don't Do Me Like That.' Released as a single, it made the Top Ten as the first in a string of chart successes for Petty. That sound you hear is Tom Petty griping -- all the way to the bank.

I'm No Virgin: or do we start over after AD 2000?

This will be Short, by Pat Darnell
Hello Dear Patrons:
Believe you me I struggle for enlightenment. As of late, I have been noticing something: Change is constant. Last year at this time were concerns about global warming, a digital age, and other foreign occupations. Now a bigger picture is in the news, that WW III is on our horizon, so says the Bush Regime.
So be it. World War is a percentage thing: if over fifty percent of the nations are in a skirmish simultaneously because of "Have / Have Not" issues, well that spells World War.
WW II and counting... And at last count we ended number two around 1946-ish, or shouldn't we have a better name for this century? The following is an excerpted report about President 'Dubya' Bush's comments:
The Herald (Harare) OPINION 30 October 2007 Posted to web 30 October 2007 Scott Ritter Harare Zimbabwe: Bush's Delusions of World War Iii Disgraceful, Banal.... http://allafrica.com/stories/200710300378.html "...At a White House Press conference two weeks back, just in case you haven't heard, (United States) President (George W.) Bush informed the American people that he had told world leaders 'if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing (Iran) from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon'.
...Pundits have raised their eyebrows and comics are busy writing jokes, but the
president’s reference to Armageddon, no matter how cavalierly uttered and subsequently brushed away, suggest an alarming context. ... There is still no official
policy in place within the administration concerning Iran. While a more sober-minded national security bureaucracy works to marginalise the hawkish posturing of the neo-cons, the administration has decided that the best policy is, in fact, no policy, which is a policy decision in its own right. ... A policy of no policy results in secret policy, which means, according to Hadley
himself, the Bush administration simply does whatever it wants to, regardless.
In the case of Iran, this means pushing for regime change in Tehran at any cost, even if it means World War III (Ritter, Scott, 30 Oct 2007)." Scott Ritter was a Marine Corps intelligence officer from 1984 to 1991 and a United Nations weapons inspector in Iraq from 1991 to 1998. This is part on an article that was first published on TruthDig.com
Some of you know, I am from the kindergarten class generation that actually practiced in the hallways at good old West University Elementary duck-ing and cover-ing. My classmates and I grew up in fear. Cold war or hot war, it is all the same to us.

It turns out, War Veterans tell us the real story: Most saying --"war is constant." Marines tell us it's the "Suck." Did not Jesus say it would be akin to being pushed through the eye of a needle to avoid persecution?
Scripture also points to the bigger war up there that is being fought between fallen angels and unfailing servants of God.

Hey! And still many people around the world talk about virgins... Moslem's on his Jihad looks for thirty or forty virgins after incinerating himself; wanton Catholics pray to virgins for intercession, Hefner preys upon them, and Buddhist... I don't know, I think he took bowls of milk and rice-pudding from several virgin maidens. Greeks.. never mind.

Moses talked about grass widows... Madonna exposes herself as quasi-virgin, and the web has Virgin copyrighted. Someone hit me if I'm wrong, but that just about covers everyone, except the Mormons, it came to pass, they like to marry a dozen or so of them all to one guy. Let's see, is their any other sect I can insult; maybe later I will think of other groups?

"I strongly suggest we not allow Geo Dubya' Bush to name the next world series of war after himself: VOW I instead of WW III..."

Virgins are so sought after, I think we should name the next War after them. The Virgin Of Wars -- or VOW I -- hey, we avoid the confusion of "www.com" and "WW III," and GWB ii, which are surely in conflict for those who might be trying to sort out acronyms. Besides it's catchy when the acronym says something else: "Yo, I VOW to kick you ass!"

Every new century should have a new character, new voice, new content. The 21st Century definitely begs a new style: thus beginVirgin Wars , supplanting three W's confusion! And I am relieved Dubya only had daughters... oops, now I've insulted all the groups.

Darnellism #1: It is Official -- We are now all Virgins reborn; We are imprinted via preceding Oval Office discussions since AD 2000.
