MooPig Brain Industries :: "Lasting Brain Damage from Sports"

Opinions Expressed are Probably Humorous
Mixed martial articles by Pat Darnell  |  June 9, 2014  |  Bryan TX

[Picture LINK]

Truth is that getting hit in the head is stuff of Comedy. Someone gets conked in the head, begins stumbling around, saying nonsensical things, is theater fodder throughout written history.

When I got hit in the head in football, or baseball, or basketball, my dad used to ask me: "Did you see stars?" That was the test for concussion back in my day, eh? If I had not seen stars, then I was okay. In fact either way didn't stop me from going right back into the game.

In MooPig's Bovine Thirst for Information Department, the editor's ran across this cool article:

A Major League Pitcher's Guide To Baseball's Bullshit Unwritten Rules: "Brandon McCarthy thinks vigilantism wouldn't get out of hand because there are more unwritten rules policing that. "In hockey, guys don't take their skates off and slash an opponent's throat with the blade." See, everyone: progress! McCarthy's choice of analogy is not without irony, since hockey is getting pushback against fighting in the wake of increased awareness of lasting brain damage, something McCarthy full well knows the dangers of. Is it not hypocritical to endorse head gear to protect pitchers from line drives, yet endorse fighting and beanballing?"
'via Blog this'

The writer tells stories of sports heroes who have established the myths of unwritten laws in games. Much like the unwritten law of "seeing stars" means a concussion according to my dad. "...(Assuming [a player] survives the barrage of behavior-adjusting fastballs sent at his head in the meantime.)..."

In other words, a bean ball can be an attitude adjuster in baseball, rendering a judgment of long time grudge for a player, inflicting brain damage. Cool, huh? Well, at least is it comical? Says Dirk Hayhurst:
"...If being a humble servant of the game means holding on to grudges for years until the chance to exact revenge presents itself, then my moral compass is off. If being a selfless, I'm only hitting you with this 95 mph fastball because I love you guy is how you play the game the right way, I was happy to play it wrong... When you start inventing rules for why it's OK for you to hurt someone for making you look bad, you're not a gamesman; you're an egomaniac..."
CONCLUSION
Emotional damage, brain damage, and institutional bullying are the basis for unwritten rules of sports.

[Picture LINK] Side Note: On Aug. 16, 1920, Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman was struck in the head by a pitch. He died a day later, becoming the only player in major league history to die from a pitched ball.

MooPig Graphiques and Rewildings :: Detroit Sweeps the Yank's!!

EXCERPT  |  " ... Welcome, my fellow Yankees fans, but please stop pointing your fingers at Alex Rodriguez! Our historic ALCS sweep at the hands of the detestable Detroit Tigers happened because we are merely victims of circumstance and once again find ourselves on the wrong side of luck! (Rob Iracane. 23 hours ago. HERE)
[ ... ]
" ... Do we wipe out a season of greatness merely because the final four games were an unprecedented disaster? No! Do we call out the offenders who led us into the toilet anyway? Yes!... "

And so on, and so on, ... blah, blah, blah, chitter -- BALK!!!!!!!!!

MooPig's Baseball Minute

[Picture LINK] [DIRK SHADD | Times]

What is it? It's a trove of arcane information about a sport that has always attracted fans with a special fondness for such minutiae.
In a room in St. Petersburg, 70,000 cards detail minor league baseball players' careers - Tampa Bay Times:
EXCERPT | " ... Inside the main building is a fireproof room, its walls stacked with cinder blocks and stuffed with fiberglass. And inside that room are 11 filing cabinets that stretch from the door to the back wall, propped on blocks of wood, some nearly a century old and weighing more than a metric ton. ... "
'via Blog this'
" ... They are records of careers started, bonuses received, service time earned, promotions enjoyed, trades endured, releases mourned, careers ended. Very simply, player record cards served as a way to keep track of players and roster sizes during a time when some minor league teams failed to keep accurate records of their own and information was far more difficult to find. ... "
Stan the Man
" ... So what good are the cards? Why hold on to them?

Because they tell us that Lou Piniella signed his first contract on June 9, 1962, for $650 a month. That the Red Sox formally added Ted Williams to their roster again on Jan. 21, 1946, after he spent more than three seasons away from baseball helping his country win a war. That Stan Musial was, in fact, suspended three times during the 1938 and 1939 seasons, though it most likely was not for disciplinary reasons but rather so that the high schooler could play in amateur games. ... Prophets of Baseball Diamonds and Rust

Tea Sippers still Number One in the Nation, BUT...
Retrieved by Pat Darnell and the Feral Pigs of Brazos Valley

That's right! There were three teams we infatuated, obsessed, and askew young boys of hot, humid, Houston summer '63, called ourselves. Longhorns, Aggies, or Razorbacks... the latter, often called Sooooeeeee PIGS, were the serious minority in Houston Little League of 1963. That's right, our color scheme did not stray far from Orange, Maroon, or Red.

In rare dramatic form, in the MooPig Baseball Diamond Order of Exemplar Play, Razorbacks have brought great honor and majesty to the history books of unbending sport adage: "It's not if you win or loose; but how you play the game..." baseball legend. This little YouTube does a number on you if you love baseball, it is like the Bolero of sport presentation. You will feel goose flesh somewhere on your bodies.

Thanks to D2R2 for bringing to our attention this Razorback Epic. We are behoove'n to his omniscient awareness of tides, climates, anthropologic shifts, and insect life cycles.

Wee All...

Dirty Farm Animals: Durty "Lucky" Harry

A Devil alone does not a Good Sport make...
by Pat Darnell

Lucifer had a night of self-inflicted mania. He was hyper ventilating after his challenging affair.

Harry had laughed at him all night long. Lucifer threw the baseball like a girl, and swung the bat like a putz. Every ball hit or thrown to Lucifer, he bobbled.

"Hey, Luci, you have to get up off your belly to play this game," had said Dirty Luck Harry, as he laughed and laughed and laughed.

I would like to list some semi-useless things about me.

Semi-useless Item #1) My brother David and I were eye-witnesses at the "longest baseball game
to go without anyone scoring" in national baseball history. I fell asleep in the 21st inning. Here is the link Astros History ...Astros won in the bottom of the 24th inning, 1 to 0.

It was played at
the Houston Astrodome, first indoor domed stadium erected, the brain child of Judge Roy Hofheinz who built many things in Houston. The "Dome" now sits vacant most of the time, next to what replaced it with new retractable roof technology, Minute Maid Park, formerly Enron Field.

In 2006, Roy "the Judge" Hofheinz was inducted in the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame.

Notes:
Astros' Rivals: St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers

Astros' Famous Fans: George H. W. Bush, Barbara Bush, Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Hilary Duff, Matthew McConaughey, Tracy McGrady
and with fans like that, who knows? Maybe you are the next most famous Astros Fan...
