MooPig Brag Segment :: My Son

One thing you will never much hear me doing is bragging on our kids... though they crave it I am certain. However, Pat2 was a Good Sport about it, and went along with me on this photo shoot, at the Flood Gauge marker, and it was a good day. This was in October 2008.

Pat2 is a natural musician, he can pick up instruments easily. I noticed this bit of talent early so I wanted to somehow document the potential growth of that talent, like any Dad would try. If I stood Pat2 up next to this sign marker today, well you can imagine the contrast in size... I still can't believe it myself.

Maybe we will do another photo shoot just to make it official. I call this picture "Flood Gauge Fusion."

Officials: U.S. drones kill 6 militants in Pakistan

MIR ALI, Pakistan (AP) — Suspected U.S. missiles fired from an unmanned drone killed six militants Saturday in a Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border, officials said.

Missiles struck two vehicles in Anghar Kala village near Miran Shah in North Waziristan — the second such attack since massive floods hit Pakistan in late July. The officials said some of the dead militants may be foreigners.

The tribal region is a haven for various Islamist militant groups. The main organization operating there is the Haqqani network, which focuses on attacking U.S. and NATO troops across border in Afghanistan.

Mullen says Osama bin Laden in Pakistan

Top American military commander Mike Mullen has said the US believes that the al Qaeda terror network leader Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri are in Pakistan.
The presence of these terrorist leaders in the region is a reason why “a principal part of the overall Af-Pak strategy is focused on elimination of safe havens” for them, Mullen told reporters.

Flood warning for Navasota River in effect
National Weather Service officials said a flood warning for the Navasota River near Normangee will continue until late Wednesday night.

At 10 a.m. Tuesday the river was at 15.1 feet, just above the flood stage of 15 feet. Officials expected the river to continue rising to near 15.2 feet by Tuesday night. They said the river should begin to recede to below the flood stage by early Wednesday afternoon.

Weather service officials urged people to stay away from the river until water levels recede, and said motorists should avoid any water-covered roads. They also said livestock and equipment should be kept out of the flood plain for the next few days.

"Why does it always have to come down to a low tech rubberband repair like Sandbagging??" asks MooPig the Wiser for having been trapped in flood waters after Allison Hurricane.

"I'm not going back after this one," 83-year-old Lois Russell said as she watched water surround her house near Gulfport. It was the third time she had fled her home because of flooding since 1965.

"It was a good place to raise my seven kids," she said, crying. "I know I haven't lost anything that feels important because I have a big family."

Then on Tuesday, the worst happened: The levee burst and Gulfport was submerged in 10 feet of water. Only 28 property owners were insured against the damage.

"They all told us, `The levees are good. You can go ahead and build,"' said Parks, who did not buy flood coverage because her bank no longer required it. "We had so much confidence in those levees."

Around the country, thousands of residents who relied on risk maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, [FEMA], may unknowingly face similar dangers.

"People put all their hopes in those levees, and when they do fail, the damage is catastrophic," said Paul Osman, the National Flood Insurance Program coordinator for Illinois. "New Orleans is the epitome; a lot of those people didn't even realize they were in a floodplain until the water was up to their roofs."

After all, local officials had assured townspeople in 1999 that the levee was sturdy enough to withstand a historic flood, and FEMA had agreed. In fact, some relieved homeowners dropped their flood insurance, and others applied for permits to build new houses and businesses.
