MooPig's Poetry Coroner :: " Andrew Motion stitches together the words ..."

Wars of nerves
November 11, 2009  |  From An Equal Voice  | Read Entire Poem HERE

War from behind the lines is a dizzy jumble.

Revolving chairs, stuffy offices, dry as dust

reports, blueprints one day and the next –

with the help of a broken-down motor car

and a few gallons of petrol – marching men

with sweat-stained faces and shining eyes,

horses straining and plunging at the guns,

little clay-pits opening beneath each step,

and piles of bloody clothes and leggings

outside the canvas door of a field hospital.

At the end of the week there is no telling

whether you spent Tuesday going over

the specifications for a possible laundry

or skirting the edges of hell in an automobile.

Although he’s no longer the Laureate Andrew Motion has marked Remembrance Day this year with a very public poem, ‘An Equal Voice‘, which used ‘found lines’ about shellshock and post traumatic stress to bring this particular ... and distinctively distressing ... experience to mind, shared to some degree by all survivors of war. As he wrote in the introduction:
This is a “found” poem, a stitching together of the voices of shellshocked people. Their words have been taken from a variety of sources, from the first world war to the present, and are presented in the poem in roughly chronological order. There’s a fragment of Siegfried Sassoon in there, but most are from unknown soldiers.
As he acknowledges he has also drawn on Ben Shephard’s history of military psychiatry, A War of Nerves, and the title is taken from a quote from Shephard’s book:
“We hear more from doctors than patients. However hard he tries, the historian cannot even the account, cannot give the patients an equal voice, because most of them chose not to recount their experiences.”
Oddly, Shephard’s response was that the poem was plagiarism, which surprised me, coming from the author of a fine ... and undeservedly out of print ... book. It’s not. But perhaps the history of the objet trouvé hasn’t yet collided with the history of the military.

The whole poem is technically quite interesting – 6 fourteen line stanzas. I’ve reproduced the first one here and recommend reading the whole thing, which was published last ... [Nov 7, 2009] ... Saturday in the Guardian Review and builds, memorably, towards a conclusion.

MooPig's Heirloom Department :: "Real CUTE ... "

[PICTURE LINK]
Company Makes Custom Stuffed Toys Out of Children's Drawings | Geekosystem:
Child’s Own Studio does something pretty neat: If you supply the studio with a drawing a child made, the studio will produce a stuffed toy using the child’s drawing as the blueprint. Are you an overprotective parent who will stop at nothing to make sure your child is both safe from possibly iffy design choices, but also one who makes sure their child gets exactly what they want at all times always? Child’s Own Studio actually prefers you, stating that the more directions provided, the better.
NEXT YEAR -- BRING YOUR CHILD'S IMAGINATION TO LIFE!
Create A Keepsake Toy.   Send in your child's drawing - one that they drew and coloured and Child's Own Studio will handcraft a unique stuffed toy, to be cherished for a lifetime.

*** With great regret, Child's Own Studio is not accepting any more orders this year.
Please contact us in January 2012***

On the site’s official FAQ, it is noted that there isn’t a set price, and the studio will provide a quote once the child’s drawing is received, though standard U.S. and Canadian shipping will cost $15. The toy ends up being around 12 to 14 inches long on average, and the toy takes about 2 to 4 weeks to make once the payment is received, though rush orders are possible, there will be an extra fee for that.

The studio is willing to use material in the toy that has been provided for them so long as it is possible, such as a sentimental blankey, and to prevent any kind of dissatisfaction, the studio will show you pictures of the finished product before they ship it, so they can work out any kinks you may find. They do say they prefer children’s drawings, but they aren’t opposed to special requests from adults. Read on below to check out some of the other completed projects, including an aloof blue cat, a fire-breathing dragon, and a stick figure with a proportionally humongous head.

Happy Birthday Sylvia

by Pat Darnell

Remember just a few days ago? Well it will be back soon.

I lived in Chicago area for many years, long enough to get a real feel for beauty, and ugliness, of snow fall and Spring melt season.

Sometimes on Easter Day, it would snow with big flaky flakes, and create the most beautiful scenery.

Weapons of Mass Distraction

Poster children for Adult Attention Deficit Disorders have set new precedent for American Wartime Tyranny
by Pat Darnell

With the aplomb of a war criminal; Dick Cheney has offered his best defense upfront of his departure from office. War crime and lame-duckedness are a grizzly combination.

Lame-duckedness is a syndrome, people become blind and get tunnel vision, causing them to only see what is in front of them, putting them into a trance like state while looking for the perfect gift. This effect is similar to what usually happens two days before Christmas.
Guy: Dude, what was up with that chick driving the Escalade, she almost hit you.

Guy 2: She's eat up, she's a Christmas zombie

Does anyone appreciate the risk one takes to present oneself in public office?
One blogger finds the recent interview with VP Dick Cheney enlightening: "..On December 15, 2008, ABC’s Jonathan Karl interviewed Vice President Dick Cheney, who actually managed to evince more delusional confidence than even anticipated. When asked about torture, Cheney disregarded criticism about his part in Guantanamo as the pish-posh of ignoramuses." (Tracy O'Neill, Dick Cheney Condones Torture in ABC Interview with Jonathan Karl, Claims US Has Not Used Torture Techniques Posted by 12/16/2008 09:30 AM)

"Doing what we need to defend the Nation. ..If that is what [is meant] that I [Dick Cheney] have changed, then yes I'm guilty...

MooPig interjects that VP Cheney might have added: ...And all those files are sealed now by the national security councils for the next fifty years. So buck up patriots and laborers, your course is laid in for you and you are "distracted."

We notice that: Gone is the doggedness, and sweaty brow of Cheney; all that is left is the crooked path of an un-surveyed paper trail.

MooPig-sters everywhere, do you hear that? That humming sound? That is the sound of mass confusion, led by weapons of mass distraction. Please all those within the sound of my voice hear this:
It will soon be over. It is complicated because that is the veil lame ducks hide behind in times of mish mash politics; these fellows pull out their weapons of mass distraction.

We deduce: Every story going out to press of the Cheney -- Bush marriage is now moot. Indictment, and pardons, is a last ditch effort to get at the truth about our compromised liberties of the past eight years. Cheney\Bush didn't produce the dead or alive body of Bin Laden, nor did they produce incentive to send American troopers to their deaths in Iraq... and so on.

There's a new marshal in town: "Barry Obama; And partner -- when we see the terrorists bleed, that is the story that will lead."
