What Happened to the Rock Critic? | Dissent Magazine: "As he narrates his trajectory from freelance writer to music editor at the Village Voice to star rock critic of the 1970s and ‘80s, Christgau offers several more revealing tidbits. For example, his trademark—the doling out of letter grades to albums and titling his reviews a “consumer guide”—was developed to annoy “a counterculture that considered consumption counterrevolutionary and didn’t like grades either.” He also argues that his reputation as Dean of Rock Criticism was somewhat tongue in cheek."

CONCLUSION
Some how along the way I developed this certain attitude towards the split between what is cool, and what is not cool. I call my attitude curmudgeon-ic bed-waggled ... sort of a ploy of walking the fence on issues.
For instance, I could have called my blog "Crawdaddy" but I chose "MooPig" so I could eventually buy and sell on the international open market. [Satire this is]

What in the Hell is Going on with the Internet?

" ... The NSA program, dubbed Bullrun, took 10 years to crack the web’s encryption technologies, before finally reaching a breakthrough in 2010 that made “vast amounts” of previously unreadable data accessible. Perhaps more worryingly, the NSA has an ongoing program to place backdoors in commercial products (websites, routers, encryption programs, etc.) to enable easy snooping on encrypted communications.MooPig Wisdom has learned by doing its thing on the free Internet. It has plied its talent and trade via the up-to-now free enterprise of the Internet. However, we now feel threatened by butchers of freedom as we enter our humble 8th year online. We suspect some entity will become our overseer, if not already in place.
The documents outline a three-pronged plan to ensure the NSA can access the bulk of the internet’s encrypted traffic: Influencing the development of new encryption standards to introduce weaknesses, using supercomputers to break encryption, and collaborating with ISPs and tech companies to gain backdoor access. MooPig Tech Coroner :: "3-D Printing"
I think I need a New Telephone -- Oh, I'll just Print One!
Procured by Pat Darnell | Apr 3, 2013 | Bryan TX

Technology Revolution: Part 1 | Punk Rock Libertarians:
"I am talking about 3D printing.
' ... Excuse me for sounding like 3D printing gives me such a Large Hadron Collider in my pants, but it does. While doing the research for this article I was anywhere from half-staffed to fully erect. Maybe that is an exaggeration, but my brain definitely had a hard on for what I was reading. I honestly believe that most of the world’s problems can be solved by 3D printing on a massive scale."
'via Blog this'
What industries will be eliminated by this revolution? Paper or plastic cups, plates and sporks ...
No not only; review spare parts for auto's, or a tune up kit for your V-8 ... how about point repair for under ground sewer or supply pipes, that have burst or broken?
All you will need is a three-D drawing of the object, entered into your onsite 3-d printer, presto magnifico, here is your part.
Old appliances will not become obsolete because of original parts, or proprietary parts that are too difficult to re-manufacture. Just print the part from a drawing, and plug it into your old toaster, typewriter, Dyson vacuum cleaner, or any old thing-a-ma-jig.
The featured article here from punkrocklibertarians focuses on parts for guns. Yes even guns will be 3-D printed.
All industries will pick up on money saving, or money making, ideas for themselves using 3-D printing.

MooPig Movie Reviews :: "The Raven"
Only 4-4/10ths Stars out of Ten in the Reviews
Re-Sniped by Pat Darnell | Feb 14, 2013 | Bryan TX
[PHOTO LINK]
John Cusack plays Edgar Allan Poe as the American writer being plagiarized and euthanize'd.
The movie took a sniper hit when it came out a year ago and did not fair well. I watched The Raven for the first time today. The review is:
Let's say this is three years later, and I am writing a review on The Raven, and remember very little about it, except back story on Edgar Allan Poe. It is not a mesmerizing movie, the film is not weird, disturbing, fascinating, entertaining, nor profound, for instance like The Master, but it points us toward an American phenomena.
That phenomena is "the path" many Americans take. It can be traced to Poe's life. Edgar Allan Poe had a thing for the aristocracy, but he didn't stick around to get the qualifications that would make him part of that scene. He chose rather to edify his street credit. He runs up gambling debts, joins the Army, returns to his adoptive parents, deliberately got kicked out of West Point, and basically lives the life of a rock star, all before he is twenty-two years old.
It resembles results today like our edgy outsiders, artists, recluses who are famous as outsiders, becoming insiders; the rebels become the giant bosses? It is the same for Poe in his day.
And I promise not to make it a "Did you know" slide into minutia. But how did we Americans not travel very far from a rock star archetypal life like E. A. Poe's?
For instance, in the movie, Poe is plagiarized by a serial murderer, who shall remain nameless. The villain uses Poe's short stories about macabre murders, to stage his own killings. This royally pisses off Poe in the movie, especially when the villain kidnaps his girlfriend, Emily, and buries her alive in a tunnel. She doesn't die.
Poe is the Baltimore Police's prime suspect in the series of murders, but it soon becomes evident he isn't the murderer, and he actually begins to help the police. It gets complicated and dicey, as one might expect, but there is no computer special effects, nor game console intelligence, nor SWAT team. As a matter of fact, the whole plot is about as emotionless as Vulcan poetry.
The plot depends on Poe's memory, as he is required to remember all of his writings, because the mysterious murderer leaves Poe's own words for clues written on pieces of paper. And, then Poe is required by the murderer to write like a sitcom author at Disney to come up with an 'impromptu story' about the current murders. This story is printed in installments in the Baltimore paper.
Spoiler: Poe [John Cusack] has to drink poison to save Emily's life.
I don't find this version of Poe's life anywhere; so it must be fiction script for the movie. The raven allusion in the title is not explained, nor his pet raccoon. We don't know in the closing scene how Poe is found on a park bench, half dead. But he dies at age forty in real life, due to unknown causes.
However, a model for American pop artists today, even after two centuries of American writing, Edgar Allan Poe is the first American rock star.
Out- out are the lights- out all!
And, over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
While the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
And its hero the Conqueror Worm.
(Edgar Allan Poe. EXCERPT :: "The Conqueror Worm" (1843) )
That's what we got out of the movie for our 99 cents rental of The Raven DVD ... and it is all good for us.

The movie took a sniper hit when it came out a year ago and did not fair well. I watched The Raven for the first time today. The review is:
" ... Thinly scripted, unevenly acted, and overall preposterous, The Raven disgraces the legacy of Edgar Allen Poe with a rote murder mystery that's more silly than scary. (Rotten Tomatoes by Flixter. Apr 27, 2012. LINK) ... "And, we could end our review right here. But, there is some stuff I want to say, regarding the American archetype writer, E. A. Poe.

MooPig 12 Days of Doom Prep :: DAY SIX "Tech Coroner"
Doom Tech is the new Door to Door Service, Bunkers for Sale
by Pat Darnell | Dec 14, 2012 | Bryan TX
Don't look back. Use to be a time that service industry was not the survivor industry.
It turns out that most Doomsday preparation scores an average of 75 out of a 100 possible points. Prepping is inadequate. If a family prepares for one of these supernatural events, it is a self defeating preparation. How so?
Doomsday prepping is about the material world we now live in, not the spirit world that will over power us. Now is that fair?
Doomsday Preppers, yes there is a demographic of them, spend thousands of dollars on their preparations by collecting material things. Then hoard the things in an expensive bunker-like dwelling, also costing thousands of dollars. Those are all taxable purchases, by the way, using after tax dollars from their paychecks. I don't see any evidence of writing off a Doomsday Prep Bunker.
So, let me get this straight. The Doomsday Prepper is asking for mortgage loans on bunkers they will build to survive the end of the world as we know it? Don't you pay back mortgage loans by increment payments for the next 15 to 20 years?

Stocking up on firearms and training in their use, well that was proven yesterday to have unbelievable results. [LINK The Associated Press. Published: Friday, December 14, 2012 at 13:20 PM.] " ... " ... Robert Bast, 46, is a prepper who works in Internet marketing during the day and runs an online community called Survive2012.com when he's off the clock. Bast, who lives in Melbourne, Australia, with his wife and three children, has spent more than $350,000 preparing for "the end of the world as we know it." ... (Blake Ellis at CNNMoney March 13, 2012: LINK)"According to NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- "The cost of preparing for doomsday isn't cheap. First you have to stock up on the appropriate gear, ammunition, food and shelter to survive a nuclear meltdown, asteroid, earthquake, solar flare or some other catastrophe. Then there's acquiring the materials you'll need to rebuild a community after the dust settles."

MooPig's Poetry Coroner :: "EVELYN SCOTT"

HARMONICS
FAUNS,Eternal pagans,
Beautiful and obscene,
Leaping through the street
With a flicker of hoofs,
And a flash of tails,
You want dryads
And they give you prostitutes.
Your souls are wet flowers,
Bathed in kisses and blood.
Golden Clyties,
The wheel of light
Rushes over your breasts.
Women are flitting around in their shells.
Pale dilutions of the waters of the world
Come through the windows.
Back and forth the women glide in their little waters;
Cellar to garret and garret to cellar,
Winding in and out under door arches and down passages,
They and their spawn,
In the shell,
In the cavern.
You may come in the shell to overpower her,
Males,
But in the shell, in the shell.
She cannot be torn from the shell without dying;
And what is the pleasure of intercourse with the dead?
Souls as dry as autumn leaves,
The color long since out.
The organ plays.
The leaves crackle and rustle a little;
Then sink down.
Old ladies with gray moss on their chins,
Old men with camphor and cotton packed around their heads,
Thin child spirits, sharp and shrill as whistles.
Gray old trees;
Gaunt old woods;
Souls as dry as leaves
After autumn is past.
Blind, they storm up from the pit.
You gave them the force,
You, when You poured the measure of agony into them.
Didn't You know what it would be,
Giving blind people fire?
Not gold and red and amber fire,
But marsh fire.
Fire of ice,
Suffering forged into suffering!
They are coming up now.
The sword is uplifted in the hands of the monster.
My valiant little puppets,
Did you think you could stand out against this?
Pierrot and Columbine breeding in the flowers....
There must be no flowers.
Black man hanged on a silver tree;
(Down by the river,
Slow river,
White breast,
White face with blood on it.)
Black man creaks in the wind,
Knees slack.
Brown poppies, melting in moonlight,
Swerve on glistening stems
Across an endless field
To the music of a blood white face
And a tired little devil child
Rocked to sleep on a rope.
Crystal columns,
When they bend they crack;
Brittle souls,
Conforming, yet not conforming–
Mirrors.
Masculine souls pass across the mirrors:
Whirling, gliding ecstasies–
Retreating, retreating,
Dimly, dimly,
Like dreams fading across the mirrors.
Then the mirrors,
Stark and brilliant in the sunshine,
Blank as the desert,
Blank as the Sphinx,
Winking golden eyes in the twinkles of light,
Silent, immutable, vacuous infinity,
Illimitable capacity for absorption,
Absorbing nothing.
Have the shapes and the shadows been swallowed up
In your recesses without depth,
You drinkers of life,
Twinkling maliciously
Your golden yellow eyes,
Mirrors winking in the sunshine?
Gray old spinners,
Weaving with the crafty fibers of your souls;
Nothing was given you but those impalpable threads.
Yet you have bound the race,
Stranglers,
With your silver spun mysteries.
All the cruel,
All the mad,
The foolish,
And the beautiful, too:
It all belongs to you
Since the first time
That you began to drop the filmy threads
When the world was half asleep.
Sometimes you are young girls;
Sometimes there are roses in your hair.
But I know you–
Sitting back there in the hollow shadows of your wombs.
The crafty fibers of your souls
Are woven in and out
With the fibers of life.
Sometimes women with eyes like wet green berries
Glide across the slick mirror of their own smiles
And vanish through lengths of gold and marble drawing rooms.
The marble smiles,
As sensuous as snow;
Hips of the Graces;
Shoulders of Clytie;
Breasts frozen as foam,
Frozen as camelia bloom;
Mounds of marble flesh,
Inexplicable wonder of white....
I dream about statuesque beauties
Who look from the shadows of opera boxes;
Or elegant ladies in novels of eighteen thirty,
At the hunt ball...
Reflections in a polish floor,
A portrait by Renoir,
A Degas dancing girl,
English country houses,
An autumn afternoon in the Bois,
Something I have read of...
In sleep one vision retreating through another,
Like mirrors being doors to other mirrors,
Satin, and lace, and white shoulders,
And elegant ladies,
Dancing, dancing.
Death,
Being a woman,
Being passive like all final things,
Being a mother,
Waits.
Shining faces
Gray and melt into her flesh.
Death envies those asleep in her,
Little children who have come back,
Fiery faces,
Bright for a moment in the darkness,
Extinguished softly in her womb.

It is easy for poets
To talk of love
In beautiful songs and sonnets,
Lamenting the sufferings of separation,
Or enjoying the delight of union
With a real or
an imaginary beloved.
To talk of love
In beautiful songs and sonnets,
Lamenting the sufferings of separation,
Or enjoying the delight of union
With a real or
an imaginary beloved.
... But of the real terror
That tears the heart of a crying child
Abandoned to its fate
Amid the burning debris of war,
No one has ever written
That great tragic ode
And it will remain unworded
To the end of man and earth.

Wars of nerves
November 11, 2009 | From An Equal Voice | Read Entire Poem HERE
War from behind the lines is a dizzy jumble.
Revolving chairs, stuffy offices, dry as dust
reports, blueprints one day and the next –
with the help of a broken-down motor car
and a few gallons of petrol – marching men
with sweat-stained faces and shining eyes,
horses straining and plunging at the guns,
little clay-pits opening beneath each step,
and piles of bloody clothes and leggings
outside the canvas door of a field hospital.
At the end of the week there is no telling
whether you spent Tuesday going over
the specifications for a possible laundry
or skirting the edges of hell in an automobile.
Although he’s no longer the Laureate Andrew Motion has marked Remembrance Day this year with a very public poem, ‘An Equal Voice‘, which used ‘found lines’ about shellshock and post traumatic stress to bring this particular ... and distinctively distressing ... experience to mind, shared to some degree by all survivors of war. As he wrote in the introduction:
This is a “found” poem, a stitching together of the voices of shellshocked people. Their words have been taken from a variety of sources, from the first world war to the present, and are presented in the poem in roughly chronological order. There’s a fragment of Siegfried Sassoon in there, but most are from unknown soldiers. As he acknowledges he has also drawn on Ben Shephard’s history of military psychiatry, A War of Nerves, and the title is taken from a quote from Shephard’s book:
“We hear more from doctors than patients. However hard he tries, the historian cannot even the account, cannot give the patients an equal voice, because most of them chose not to recount their experiences.”Oddly, Shephard’s response was that the poem was plagiarism, which surprised me, coming from the author of a fine ... and undeservedly out of print ... book. It’s not. But perhaps the history of the objet trouvé hasn’t yet collided with the history of the military.
The whole poem is technically quite interesting – 6 fourteen line stanzas. I’ve reproduced the first one here and recommend reading the whole thing, which was published last ... [Nov 7, 2009] ... Saturday in the Guardian Review and builds, memorably, towards a conclusion.

MooPig's Poetry Coroner :: "Jan and Dean -- Dead Man's Curve"
When an XKE pulled up on the right
And rolled down the window of his shiny new Jag
And challenged me then and there to a drag
I said, "you're on, buddy, my mill's runnin' fine
Let's come off the line, now, at Sunset and Vine
But I'll go you one better if you've got the nerve
Let's race all the way
To Dead Man's Curve"
Chorus:
Dead Man's Curve, it's no place to play
Dead Man's Curve, you must keep away
Dead Man's Curve, I can hear 'em say:
"Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve"
The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine
I flew past LaBrea, Schwab's, and Crescent Heights
And all the Jag could see were my six taillights
He passed me at Doheny then I started to swerve
But I pulled her out and there we were
At Dead Man's Curve
Partial chorus:
Dead Man's Curve, it's no place to play
Dead Man's Curve
Dramatic interlude:
Well - the last thing I remember, Doc, I started to swerve
And then I saw the Jag slide into the curve
I know I'll never forget that horrible sight
I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right

GOD'S MERCIES
A "rhyme" written by Ken Wright, 1921
Sects, creeds and theories
Are thoughts seeking the light;
Nations and races of people
Constantly are seeking the right.
-----
All have desires within them
God's truth to understand,
Evidence of honour and justice
Are witnessed in every land.
-----
Each has a creed or a theory
Many a faith strong and true,
All are God's children in weakness
Righteous lives they seek anew.
-----
God's hand is seen all around us
His mercies and blessings abound,
On that day when all must face Him
He then our course will expound.

MooPig's Poetry Coroner :: "Wimpy"
Little known facts about this moocher of burgers: Wimpy.
He originally was a referee for Popeye's professional fights.
He has at least 24 college degrees and a "lofty" IQ.
Wimpy is quite the ladies' man. It's his silver tongue, again. He can sweet-talk any woman on Earth (and will surely try it if he finds out she has access to hamburgers). He has wooed all sorts of females, human and otherwise. He has had more than one affair with the SeaHag, and their relationship to this day is questionable.
He's a poet and here's a sample:
J. WELLINGTON WIMPY'S
APOSTROPHE TO A DESERT DAISY
Oh, flower of death, so frail, so red,
Growing from a thing so dead -
Even as l will! be quite soon-
Merely bones 'neath sun and moon
Oh, life -oh, death-so close akin,
Though death can't lose- life can't win
For death is sure, but life-ah well,
'Tis not for me to break the spell
That binds all things in a mighty plan
That can't be changed by laws of man -
That can't be altered by human tricks,
Or e'en be tilted by politics-
Fate alone can pull the strings
That control all human and earthly things.
It is just so: and so 'twill be,
Till the very end of Eternity-
So I cast my lot along with my kind,
And there'll be nobody above to remind-
To remind the gatekeeper an' pass the tip
That J.W. Wimpy was only a gyp.
But-shall you Live? You-just a weed!
To scatter forth your worthless seed-
While I, creation's thing supreme,
Pass on to further nature's scheme?
Nay! Nay! Not so! I'll turn about-
I'm Fate today, you lowly sprout-
I'll pull you up, you little cuss-
Hah! Dust do dust the each of us!
Oh, desert daisy, so pure, so sweet,
You grew from soil that once was meat-
Aye, meat of my choice you chose for food-
Oh, why?-Why have I been so rude?
We both crave beef; we're unlike the others- We're kindred souls; we may be brothers-
But I've killed you. my flower so bright, Plucked you from your home so white.
Sorrow stills my desert madness,
Wild emotions turn to sadness-
But in my brain there is no lull.
ror I picked you from your desert skull-
A skull your throne, whereupon you sat-
And the skull of a cow at that, at that-
And the skull of a lovely cow at that-
And the skull of a lovely cow at that-

POETRY Geist didn't Make the List Again
by Pat Darnell | Feb 1, 2012 | Bryan TX
MooPig claims to be a writer's writer ... that is -- a fellow who tries to inspire, and, ignite others in their writing tasks. That is why we have the site POETRY Geist for the poetically inclined. MooPig Wisdom is for the prose masters. Ever so humble, it is chiefly the work of one writer at large. He, Pat Darnell, has to refer to himself in third person because of the multiple hats he wears. Yes, he might be several light years behind in his poetic expressions, but not due to procrastination.
It is the "other" worldliness that prescripts the worthiness.
National Public Radio, NPR, filed this list on their show to distinguish poets from last year, 2011. We hope you get some use out of the list, and some inspiration out of POETRY Geist.

EXCERPT | " ... January 13, 2012 ... I can't tell you how the 2012 presidential election is going to turn out, nor can I say for certain whether The Office will outlast its first year without Steve Carell (though things are looking promising so far). What I can do is assure you that 2012 is full of exciting, enduring poetry.'via Blog this'
Like music and fashion, contemporary poetry is often about looking at things from the past and dressing them up for the present. Today's average poem (if there is such a thing) takes us to the frontiers of language, borrowing from Twitter memes to overheard conversation, from the classics to bad movies. These are not your parents' — and certainly not your parents' parents' poems — in fact, some of these poets, in their 30s, 40s and 50s, are practically babies in poetry years, though some are among the wisest we've ever had.(TEICHER, CRAIG MORGAN. I know you are all thinking Eastman, Kodak, Paul McCartney ... what will Paul do with his inherited Kodak stock... well here is the buffer on that -- No connection. His first wife Linda Eastman was a photographer, and sometimes hinted that she was related to the Eastmans of Eastman-Kodak, but she wasn't. Her father was a prominent New York show-business attorney, whose original name was Epstein. Her mother was a department store heiress.

Poetry Coroner: Poem found DOA

I Drive a Truck
by Pat Darnell
I drive a truck
that's got something written
...on the side
I drive a truck
it's got something written
...on the side
It says Micro Mickey's
Double D-D's
Carpet Cleaning
Specialties and Supplies
Honk if you like.. it says...
if you like the way I drive
I drive a truck
wid' that written
on the side
I got no where
to go that
I can really hide
Mickey thinks its funnyI might drive to Alabama
I don't see it all that way
he don't have to drive it
like I drive it around all day...

I might drive to Oceanside
I might drive to Odessa
Or Columbus, Ohi'
Or maybe Argentina;
People allus' honkin' at me
...nowhere can I hide, in'a
truck with them things...
...written on the side
if you see me out a truckin'
remember how I...
...remember how I ride
please don't...
please don't honk at me
when you read...
...when you read what's
written on the side.
Lot's of trucks goin' by
...going by all day and night
"You the only one I can trust
with all those supplies..."
Says Mickey D D to my cries.
Blue, silver-tan; green and white
lot's of trucks going by
I'm feelin' so uptight....
Some of them got something...
something written on their side...
I drive D-D's truck...
...cannot shuck ya and jive...
cannot lay down dirty and die--

You know Mickey: I cannot tell you lies
I sure am wishin' that I was not denied...
'sure wish I could,
...could a' instead a' drive --
Could a' instead a' drive
a Harley Davidson Electra Glide
Lawd a'mercy... Lawd alive--
please deliver me, Lawd
...deliver me from this
...this delivery truck I drive
wi' all that mess
...all that mess,
written up on its side.
