MooPig Human Rights Update :: Feeding Intolerance: Prohibitions on Sharing Food with People Experiencing Homelessness
[Picture LINK]
Some proponents of food sharing restrictions have argued that sharing food with people in outdoor locations enables them to remain homeless.
More likely, persons who receive food from outdoor food programs may remain homeless due to lack of affordable housing, shelter space, and services, or due to their struggles with physical or psychiatric disabilities or substance addiction.
Instead of removing food sources, cities would more likely reduce or end homelessness in their cities by finding solutions to the underlying causes of homelessness.
Framing sharing food as a factor in enabling people to remain homeless is misleading. Food is not an addiction; food is necessary for survival.
Depriving a person of food means that she must put all of her energy into obtaining food and less energy on improving other aspects of her life. Food sharing programs that reach out to those in public spaces may be the only way some homeless individuals can obtain healthy and safe food.
Feeding Intolerance: Prohibitions on Sharing Food with People Experiencing Homelessness: A Report by The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty and The National Coalition for the Homeless 15nov2007: "The right to food is a well-recognized human right. This basic human right is explicitly mentioned in the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights and over 120 instruments of international law.
13 Twenty-two countries have included a right to food in their domestic constitutions.
14 As the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food has stated, a nation must refrain from taking “actions that result in increasing levels of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition.”
15 Food sharing restrictions deny homeless persons this basic human right. Placing restrictions on food sharing at a time where there is an increased need for housing and food assistance leaves many people with nowhere to turn for basic survival needs."

CONCLUSION
Make your own conclusions. As politicians try to invent lackey ways to deal with high density urban problems, like homelessness, those same politicians are diminishing your and my freedoms.
These laws to prohibit feeding the homeless on city streets come with hefty fines and prolonged visits to jail. It is personal, and in your face.
Having something to eat is a basic human right.

MooPig Book Review Notes :: Epidemic of Medical Errors
EXCERPT | " ... The equivalent of six jumbo jets of people dying each day who enter a hospital has created a set of problems that the healthcare delivery system seems unable to solve. A recent study in North Carolina hospitals showed that harm to patients is common, and not devreasing over time. (William Charney, Edt. 2012, Taylor and Francis Group.) ..."
"HYPOTHESIS | " ... Our hypothesis is that health-care delivery system has evolved improperly and has built within itself constructs that lead to medical error and hospital infections. ... In re-framing the discussion, we will look at such macro-issues as "for-profit-care," hierarchies in human relationship systems (bullying), over reliance on technology, stress, health-care working conditions, staffing, ... legal issues that conflict with safety issues..."

" ... Mandatory reporting was dead on arrival. By contrast, Americans know exactly how many people die from car accidents each year because lawmakers decided long ago that was a step toward preventing them. Motor vehicle deaths are the No. 1 cause of accidental death in the United States, with more than 43,600 deaths in 2006, according to the CDC. The next three causes — poisoning, firearms and falls — account for 90,000 deaths, combined. (HERE) ... "
If that makes your head swim, that's enough numbers to ponder for now. Is it true 'to err is human?'

One Day at the Middle School Bizarre...
Sent: Monday, June 30, 2008 3:35 PM
To: Jason Thomas
Subject:
This letter was sent to the principals office after a middle school had sponsored a luncheon for the elderly. An old lady had received a new radio at the lunch as a door prize, and was writing to say thank you. This story is a credit to all human kind. Forward to anyone you know who might need a lift today!
Dear Faculty and Students,
God bless you for the beautiful radio I won at your recent senior citizens' luncheon. I am 84 years old and live at an assisted home for the aged. All of my family has passed away. I am all alone now and it's nice to know someone is thinking of me. God bless you for your kindness to an old forgotten lady. My roommate is 95 and always had her own radio. Before I received this one, she would never let me listen to hers, even when she was napping. The other day, her radio fell off the night stand and broke into a lot of little pieces. It was awful and she was in tears. She asked if she could listen to mine, and finally I could say to that stingy bitch, fuck you.
Thank you for that opportunity.
Sincerely,
Agnes
