MooPig Oil Spill Department :: "How long does it take to Recover from Oil spills?"

Who Gets to Clean It Up?

"... Small pockets of oil, from the 1989 Exxon-Valdez oil spill, still persist in pockets along Alaska's coasts, hidden by rocks that have kept the elements from breaking down the crude oil, scientists reported yesterday -- Feb. 27. (Andrea Thompson, Planet Earth Editor. February 27, 2014. LINK) ..."

I was 34 in 1989. At 34 I was working, had a house, a family, and a dog. We had two cars in the garage. In the 25 years since, only now major wildlife, otters, have started to thrive again in the area of the 1989 Oil Spill in Prince William Sound. Now at age 58, I find myself with hyper-vigilance, but still with same lifestyle. The return of the otters does not comfort me.

Sea Otters Rebound from Exxon Valdez Disaster - weather.com: "Nearly a quarter of a century after the Exxon Valdez disaster dumped 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound, sea otter numbers have rebounded to levels seen before the spill, the U.S. Geological Survey announced recently with a new study (Andrea Thompson, LiveScience. Mar 4, 2014. LINK) ..."

This oil spill was in 1989, and it lingers still. The more recent BP, British Petroleum, Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill was 22 times larger than the Exxon-Valdez spill. The Exxon-Valdez leaked 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound, while BP's Deepwater Horizon spill spewed more than 245 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

The initial clean-up response to Exxon-Valdez in March 1989 was slow, ineffective and poorly coordinated. Oil was still present on some shores, despite mechanical and chemical -- bioremediation, which is the use of either naturally occurring or deliberately introduced microorganisms or other forms of life to consume and break down environmental pollutants, in order to clean up an oil spill -- clean-up efforts totaling more than $2 billion between 1989 and 1992. Eight sections of beach near Chenega Bay were cleaned again in 1997.

CONCLUSION
It takes forever to clean up oil spills.
