Who Gets to Clean It Up?

"... Small pockets of oil, from the 1989 Exxon-Valdez oil spill, still persist in pockets along Alaska's coasts, hidden by rocks that have kept the elements from breaking down the crude oil, scientists reported yesterday -- Feb. 27. (Andrea Thompson, Planet Earth Editor. February 27, 2014. LINK) ..."
I was 34 in 1989. At 34 I was working, had a house, a family, and a dog. We had two cars in the garage. In the 25 years since, only now major wildlife, otters, have started to thrive again in the area of the 1989 Oil Spill in Prince William Sound. Now at age 58, I find myself with hyper-vigilance, but still with same lifestyle. The return of the otters does not comfort me.
Sea Otters Rebound from Exxon Valdez Disaster - weather.com: "Nearly a quarter of a century after the Exxon Valdez disaster dumped 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound, sea otter numbers have rebounded to levels seen before the spill, the U.S. Geological Survey announced recently with a new study (Andrea Thompson, LiveScience. Mar 4, 2014. LINK) ..."

This oil spill was in 1989, and it lingers still. The more recent BP, British Petroleum, Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill was 22 times larger than the Exxon-Valdez spill. The Exxon-Valdez leaked 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound, while BP's Deepwater Horizon spill spewed more than 245 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
The initial clean-up response to Exxon-Valdez in March 1989 was slow, ineffective and poorly coordinated. Oil was still present on some shores, despite mechanical and chemical -- bioremediation, which is the use of either naturally occurring or deliberately introduced microorganisms or other forms of life to consume and break down environmental pollutants, in order to clean up an oil spill -- clean-up efforts totaling more than $2 billion between 1989 and 1992. Eight sections of beach near Chenega Bay were cleaned again in 1997.
CONCLUSION
It takes forever to clean up oil spills.

MooPig's Trend Spotter Department :: "Cruise Ships"
Figuring Out the Odds
Retrieved by Pat Darnell | Jan 26, 2014 | Bryan TX
[Picture LINK] Troubles at sea ...
Why would anyone haul their favorite vacation clothes and baggage aboard a Cruise Ship that has 3,000 others milling about, with all their baggage on board? What is the draw to these tugs? My Dad was in the Navy, WWII, on a Destroyer in the Pacific, and all he ever thought about while out there was "When do I get to go home?"
US officials probe illnesses on Caribbean cruise: "KINGSTON, Jamaica — U.S. health officials will board a cruise ship docked in the U.S. Virgin Islands to investigate an illness outbreak that has stricken at least 300 people with gastrointestinal symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea, a cruise company spokeswoman said Sunday.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control, CDC, and Prevention has said that 281, or nearly 10 percent, of the 3,050 passengers aboard Royal Caribbean International's Explorer of the Seas have reported getting sick. Twenty-two crew members have also reported feeling ill."

Here's a list of 51 Super-size Ocean-liner Cruise ships LINK. Here's a list of Cruise Lines LINK. We know you can look up Wikki stuff, but the staggering reality is that a few illnesses on one ship is only a smidgen of a problem to International Cruise Lines ships that number in the hundreds.
The Explorer of the Sea mentioned above can accommodate 3,117 "guests" with two people per room. This information from 2011 is not available on the Royal Caribbean Press Center Web-site HERE, today.
So what are the odds of getting sea-sick, ill, injured, raped, lost, or killed on a modern cruise ship today? Christopher Elliott on November 6th, 2010 said: " ...The cruise industry contends a trip on the high seas is safer than a drive to the airport and a stay at a hotel. But just how safe is it?... "
Cruise Junkie reports this bit on its web-site "Cruise and Ferry Passengers and Crew Overboard 1995 - 2014": "Number missing [persons] in past 5 years (2009 - 2013) = 113 (average = 22.6 per year)..." HERE.
I'll never forget when I was ten years old and Dad took us all to Acapulco, Mexico, when I got the Touristas, gastrointestinal bug. The CDC reports HERE the cause of gastrointestinal disorders for passengers aboard cruise ships.
LiveLeaks shares on its Web-site HERE some video of large waves out there on the Ocean. Passenger falls from the gangplank HERE.
CONCLUSION
At first we thought we could figure out the odds of passengers getting into trouble on a cruise in today's mega-tonnage multi-decked Ocean Liners. Figuring those odds will require much more study. In the Summer of 2010, " ...President Obama signed the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act, which requires cruise lines to report all deaths, missing persons, theft, sexual harassment and assaults. However, the Department of Homeland Security hasn’t yet published the data and did not offer a timeline for its release...."
The editors in MooPig's Trend Spotter Department all agree; since JFK and Jackie and all their entourage always vacationed near the sea, Americans will trend and copy that royal couples's extended period of recreational behavior, buying cruise tickets en-masse.

"...Ships can last for many years and they can travel to different seas, as long as they are carefully maintained and regularly checked. Big sea vessels can carry heavy equipment as well as many passengers, and to experience tragedy such as sinking is really unfortunate. The number of sinking ships is very alarming and we hope that such tragic events will be prevented. (July 12, 2012. LINK and LINK )... "

Fukushima: 28 Signs That The West Coast Is Being Absolutely Fried With Nuclear Radiation… | UKIAH BLOG: "Ultimately, all of this nuclear radiation will outlive all of us by a very wide margin. They are saying that it could take up to 40 years to clean up the Fukushima disaster, and meanwhile countless innocent people will develop cancer and other health problems as a result of exposure to high levels of nuclear radiation. We are talking about a nuclear disaster that is absolutely unprecedented, and it is constantly getting worse. The following are 28 signs that the west coast of North America is being absolutely fried with nuclear radiation from Fukushima…" [Read Entire Ukiah Blog Post HERE]

1. Polar bears, seals and walruses along the Alaska coastline are suffering from fur loss and open sores…
2. There is an epidemic of sea lion deaths along the California coastline…
3. Along the Pacific coast of Canada and the Alaska coastline, the population of sockeye salmon is at a historic low. Many are blaming Fukushima.
4. Something is causing fish all along the west coast of Canada to bleed from their gills, bellies and eyeballs.
5. A vast field of radioactive debris from Fukushima that is approximately the size of California has crossed the Pacific Ocean and is starting to collide with the west coast.
6. It is being projected that the radioactivity of coastal waters off the U.S. west coast could double over the next five to six years.
7. Experts have found very high levels of cesium-137 in plankton living in the waters of the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and the west coast.
8. One test in California found that 15 out of 15 bluefin tuna were contaminated with radiation from Fukushima.
9. Back in 2012, the Vancouver Sun reported that cesium-137 was being found in a very high percentage of the fish that Japan was selling to Canada…
• 73 percent of mackerel tested
• 91 percent of the halibut
• 92 percent of the sardines
• 93 percent of the tuna and eel
• 94 percent of the cod and anchovies
• 100 percent of the carp, seaweed, shark and monkfish
10. Canadian authorities are finding extremely high levels of nuclear radiation in certain fish samples…
11. Some experts believe that we could see very high levels of cancer along the west coast just from people eating contaminated fish…
12. BBC News recently reported that radiation levels around Fukushima are “18 times higher” than previously believed.
13. An EU-funded study concluded that Fukushima released up to 210 quadrillion becquerels of cesium-137 into the atmosphere.
14. Atmospheric radiation from Fukushima reached the west coast of the United States within a few days back in 2011.
15. At this point, 300 tons of contaminated water is pouring into the Pacific Ocean from Fukushima every single day.
16. A senior researcher of marine chemistry at the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Meteorological Research Institute says that “30 billion becquerels of radioactive cesium and 30 billion becquerels of radioactive strontium” are being released into the Pacific Ocean from Fukushima every single day.
17. According to Tepco, a total of somewhere between 20 trillion and 40 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium have gotten into the Pacific Ocean since the Fukushima disaster first began.
18. According to a professor at Tokyo University, 3 gigabecquerels of cesium-137 are flowing into the port at Fukushima Daiichi every single day.
19. It has been estimated that up to 100 times as much nuclear radiation has been released into the ocean from Fukushima than was released during the entire Chernobyl disaster.
20. One recent study concluded that a very large plume of cesium-137 from the Fukushima disaster will start flowing into U.S. coastal waters early next year…
21. It is being projected that significant levels of cesium-137 will reach every corner of the Pacific Ocean by the year 2020.
22. It is being projected that the entire Pacific Ocean will soon “have cesium levels 5 to 10 times higher” than what we witnessed during the era of heavy atomic bomb testing in the Pacific many decades ago.
23. The immense amounts of nuclear radiation getting into the water in the Pacific Ocean has caused environmental activist Joe Martino to issue the following warning… “Your days of eating Pacific Ocean fish are over.”
24. The Iodine-131, Cesium-137 and Strontium-90 that are constantly coming from Fukushima are going to affect the health of those living the the northern hemisphere for a very, very long time. Just consider what Harvey Wasserman had to say about this…
25. According to a recent Planet Infowars report, the California coastline is being transformed into “a dead zone”…
26. A study conducted last year came to the conclusion that radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster could negatively affect human life along the west coast of North America from Mexico to Alaska “for decades”.
27. According to the Wall Street Journal, it is being projected that the cleanup of Fukushima could take up to 40 years to complete.
28. Yale Professor Charles Perrow is warning that if the cleanup of Fukushima is not handled with 100% precision that humanity could be threatened “for thousands of years“… (Michael Snyder, on October 21st, 2013. LINK) ..."
SUMMARY
" ... Given that the FDA has refused to test seafood for radiation, we’re not that confident that the government is looking that hard to see if Fukushima fallout is the cause. (George Washington on 03/31/2013. LINK) ..."

There’s never been a devastation on one continent that has moved off to the other continent and actually recorded. (LINK) ..."
" ... The nuclear-power industry, meanwhile, argues the document does not relax guidelines for responding to radiological incidents enough. Comments the Nuclear Energy Institute, which represents the industry, submitted Sept. 16 say the agency [the EPA] needs to do a better job balancing efforts to protect the public from radiation exposure with other considerations.
LINK) ..."
" ... No contaminated fish have turned up in the U.S., or in U.S. waters, according to experts from the Food and Drug Administration [which isn't testing], Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They expressed confidence that even a single fish sufficiently contaminated to pose a risk to human health would be detected by the " ... U.S. monitoring system. [But would the government announce such detection?] (April 19, 2011 by WashingtonsBlog. LINK)..."" ... Vancouver Sun reported in January 2012 that 94 per cent of the anchovies and 92 per cent of the sardines sold by the Japanese to Canada contained radioactive cesium. Some of the fish were caught in Japanese coastal waters; but others were made many hundreds of miles away in the open ocean. (Note: there may be additional reasons for fluctuations in the numbers of anchovies and sardines other than radiation.) Moreover, radiation from Fukushima was directly deposited into the kelp off the Western coast of North America … especially in Southern California. (George Washington on 03/31/2013. LINK) ... "
" ... The floating debris will likely be carried by currents off of Japan toward Washington, Oregon and California before turning toward Hawaii and back again toward Asia, circulating in what is known as the North Pacific gyre, said Curt Ebbesmeyer, a Seattle oceanographer who has spent decades tracking flotsam. (April 19, 2011 by WashingtonsBlog. LINK) ... "CONCLUSION
" ... We are not prepared for this. Nobody is prepared. Nobody has even thought through the dimensions. This is unprecedented in scientific history. It’s unprecedented in recorded history.
(Douglas P. Guarino, Global Security Newswire. September 23, 2013. LINK) ..."
MooPig Enterprises weeps. For five years we have tried to expose the bureaucratic bombast that pervades our modern existence. At present we at MooPig Enterprises can think of nothing more sinister than this: government agencies not reporting on the biggest disaster in human history.

MooPig Tech Coroner :: "Nuclear Power Plants"
Blunders Cast Doubt on Japan’s Cleanup of Nuclear Accident Site
Mashed articles by Pat Darnell | Oct 12, 2013 | Bryan TX
[Picture LINK]
We are seeing the demise of yet another technologic wonderment from the 20th century. Nuclear power plants seemed like the answer to all humankind's energy problems back when nuclear fusion was all the craze. All we asked for was clean super hot steam to turn our turbines in generating electricity power for our existence.
It turns out, the payback for mistakes and design flaws is life altering fallout of radioactive material in our air, water, and land. Cleaning up the mess of a meltdown is near impossible. Japan is not saying much about " ... Tepco who has resorted to technological quick fixes that have failed to control the crisis, further damaging Japan’s flagging credibility and only deflecting hard decisions into the future. Some critics said the government’s new proposals offer just more of the same. ( MARTIN FACKLER. Published: September 3, 2013. LINK) ..."
[Picture LINK]
" ... Most commentary on the Fukushima plant focuses on the multiple leaks of water laced with high- and low-level radiation. An estimated 300 tons of highly toxic water, including Strontium-90, has leaked from a hastily constructed tank. This became a level-3 crisis on Aug. 21, “serious” on the United Nation’s 7-point International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale, and represents the most urgent reported problem at the plant since the initial meltdowns. ( ANDREW DEWIT AND CHRISOPHER HOBSON. Aug 29, 2013. LINK)..."
Government must take over Fukushima nuclear cleanup | The Japan Times: "Even under ordinary circumstances spent-fuel removal is a difficult task, normally requiring the aid of computers. But due to the damage, removal of spent fuel from Reactor No. 4 and the five other reactors will have to be done manually. This work will be undertaken in arduous conditions, increasing the risk of yet another mishap. And if something does go wrong, the consequences could be far more severe than any nuclear accident the world has ever seen. If a fuel rod is dropped, breaks or becomes entangled while being removed, possible worst case scenarios include a big explosion, a meltdown in the pool, or a large fire. Any of these situations could lead to massive releases of deadly radionuclides into the atmosphere, putting much of Japan — including Tokyo and Yokohama — and even neighboring countries at serious risk."

[Picture LINK] "The problem with a fuel pool criticality is that you can't stop it. There are no control rods to control it,” Gundsersen said [Arnie Gunderson, a veteran US nuclear engineer and director of Fairewinds Energy Education]. “The spent fuel pool cooling system is designed only to remove decay heat, not heat from an ongoing nuclear reaction."

MooPig Tech Coroner :: "Nuclear Missiles"
Uranium and Other Heavies
Half-life Articles Mashed by Pat Darnell | Sep 20, 2013 | Bryan TX
[Picture LINK]
I have a friend on faceBook who has been posting blurbs about movement of Uranium ore around the world. It seems the mining and handling of Uranium is a clusterfrak, like everything else in the world of technology, industry, banking, living, etcetera ... etcetera ... etcetera. The uranium supply chain is prone to misdirection or black-market-like foiles, and used as a political football, or is it ... no one really knows. But from her blurbs I gather that the primary motivator in mining uranium and other heavies is "Money, Profit, and Corporations' Financial Health."
It turns out the mining, processing, refining, enrichment of uranium and other heavy metals continues despite the end of the Cold War. Yes, MooPig Uranium Enrichment Department is a musky closet with spider webs and the smell of Grandpa.
Very little is ever discussed about uranium and rare earth metals. If you search faceBook for "uranium" you get a page about a social club. We have missiles in rural areas throughout the USA, and many more that are in unknown locations. The entire Titan II missile and its underground silo is a toxic chemical nightmare.
CONCLUSION
Friendly fire and collateral damages will be understatement if one of our own nuclear warhead missiles does detonate on American soil. Our US Government, and all its affiliate corporations working for it, has misinformed the American public about the threat of this happening.
We quoted it once, we'll do it again -- this one is for you Dr Patton:

" ... Absent the Soviet threat, it's easy to forget that these ungodly devices are still all around us. An entire generation, as Schlosser told me recently, is blissfully unaware of the specter of nuclear devastation. (Michael Mechanic | Sun Sep. 15, 2013. LINK) ... "Special thanks to rebellious Mother Jones Magazine for posting a review on Eric Schlosser's new book, Command and Control. Schlosser tells of danger lurking in American landscapes that could match the Japanese Earthquake-Tsunami-Nuclear Disaster at Fukushima. If one of these "dormant" Titan II nuclear missiles was caught in an earthquake, it would blow up in dozens of ways, for dozens of reasons.
" ... The nose cone on top of the Titan II was deep black, and inside it sat a W-53 thermonuclear warhead, the most powerful weapon ever carried by an American missile. The warhead had a yield of nine megatons—about three times the explosive force of all the bombs dropped during the Second World War, including both atomic bombs. (Michael Mechanic | Sun Sep. 15, 2013. LINK) ... "A Sneak Peek at Eric Schlosser's Terrifying New Book on Nuclear Weapons | Mother Jones: "Here's the truth: Just days after JFK was sworn in as president, one of the most terrifying weapons in our arsenal was a hair's breadth from detonating on American soil. It would have pulverized a portion of North Carolina and, given strong northerly winds, could have blanketed East Coast cities (including New York, Baltimore, and Washington, DC) in lethal fallout."
" ... EXCERPT | Eric Schlosser: 'I spent some time with the Air Force ... I was interested in the future of warfare in space: space weapons, particle-beam weapons, lasers, directed-energy devices. A lot of the people who were involved in it had started their careers as missile-crew officers. As I spent time with them, I became more interested in their stories from the Cold War about nuclear weapons than I did in the future of warfare in space. ... I find it remarkable how little public attention has been paid to the safety of nuclear weapons since the end of the Cold War.' (Michael Mechanic | Sun Sep. 15, 2013. LINK)... "'via Blog this'

We quoted it once, we'll do it again -- this one is for you Dr Patton:
" ... What is the greatest threat to humanity? We are, of course….and our technology. Like a dangerous weapon in the hands of a child, technology has overtaken our capacity to control potential consequences. Oxford University’s Future of Humanity Institute, led by director Nick Bostrom, says we have entered this new kind of technological era that we have no track record of surviving.
Our technological intelligence may have the potential for creating a better world, but so far, in areas of the economy, genetics and biologics, arms and warfare, security and surveillance, as well as the environment and energy, technology is also completely indifferent to the law of unintended consequences.
Fukushima is what happens when we have the moral responsibility of infants and the technology of adults. (Dr Caldicott. March, 2011. LINK)... "

Members of the US salvage company Titan and Italian firm Micoperi work at the wreck of Italy's Costa Concordia cruise ship near the harbour of Giglio Porto.
Salvage workers attempt to raise the cruise ship today in the largest and most expensive maritime salvage operation in history, so-called "parbuckling", to rotated the ship by a series of cables and hydraulic machines.

Death Ship "Carnival Spirit"

[Picture LINK] Paul Rossington and Kristen Schroder, from New South Wales state, were discovered missing Thursday morning after the Carnival Spirit docked at Sydney's Circular Quay, at the end of a 10-day journey, said New South Wales Police Superintendent Mark Hutchings.
Rescuers search for Australian couple who fell overboard - CBS News: "Carnival Corp. has been plagued by a series of high-profile problems in recent years. Last year, the Costa Concordia ran aground off the coast of Italy, killing 32 people. Also last year, the Costa Allegra caught fire and lost power in the Indian Ocean, leaving passengers without working toilets, running water or air conditioning for three days. Costa is a division of Carnival Corp.
In February, passengers aboard the Carnival Triumph spent five days without power in the Gulf of Mexico after an engine-room fire disabled the vessel. Those on board complained of squalid conditions, including overflowing toilets and food shortages."

Yea OZ,
I concur with you. A work mate once replied to a female in the office who was bragging about a wonderful 12 day cruise around the Caribbean.
His reply: Why would I spend a lot of money to spend 12 days with 2,000 people I neither know or most likely wouldn't like on a boat I could not escape from?"
She frowned and walked away.

Organizations Helping Out
Don't be a Drive-By Rubber-necker
by Pat Darnell | Jan 13, 2013 | Bryan TX
If you can send the word out that yesterday was the three year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti, it is appreciated. Maybe folks who were able to donate in 2010 will ask the right questions of the leadership in Haiti and in the USA. MooPig has published numerous articles on Haiti disaster, and that is its contribution. We were shocked to realize there is still almost a 100,000 people living in squalor, in tent cities in Port au Prince, after three years.
Below you will find web sites of organizations that provide relief for disasters all over the world.

Each of the following organizations have fund raising efforts in place to earmark donations for Haitian relief. The main page of their websites provides details.
Example: [Slideshow from Jan 2010]
Paul McMaster, a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) surgeon, describes what he and his team have seen and done since they arrived in Port-au-Prince to bring emergency medical care to earthquake survivors on January 15. (doctors without borders. JANUARY 20, 2010. HERE)

MooPig Re-Run :: New Brands for BANDS -- "Brilliant Ideas Department at MooPig Enterprises"
*Originally Published 1/18/10 10:01 PM*
Developing New Label Ideas for a New Year
by Pat Darnell and Wri N Kullroecker
Everyone seeing Haiti Aid stuff all over, with promise of a soon-to-come Galactic level Spectacle performances from Bands and old stand-bys? Like DUBYA, and Willie.
Wondering 'HOW' you and your Band too can hustle all that open TV exposure, when other wise you can't find a stage -- no, ne'er even a street corner -- to play your deluge ocean of emotion music ... ?
Wonder no more; MooPig Enterprises' "Branding Department" has an idea for starving musicians.
Instead of providing Aid after-the-fact, MooPig's talented "Head Hunters Department" suggests a regional dispatch for Bands 'WHEN' the disasters are actually happening. The USA has very precise regional disaster corridors; and incredibly advanced warning systems are every day being heralded.
"There are many empty spaces, and dead air, resulting from concert-type Disaster-Aid lag-times; those need to be filled," say those who measure such things.
Why not provide Disaster Rockers Inc when a disaster is developing. Regional dispatch can round up the next Band will-call and rotate into disaster sites, to set up Stadium Rock Fest's.
This way the responding BAND -- or for really large cataclysms, multiple BANDs-- receive buckets full of much deserved Exposure !!
No doubt with international news wires also on site, your BAND will Rock the Headlines every time. And, don't forget the MUSIC itself, with the disaster as backdrop your Band will provide interludes of tunes for all the anxious queuing families, rubber-neckers, and onlookers.
Rescuers will appreciate your efforts as well: you can play your UNION Musician card with the Fire Dept and EMS groups... eh?
"It takes a village to have a disaster," say proponents of over-population groups.
Some "What to include" suggestions come to mind:

Larger items could be on-hand similar to READY MEN or like a Red Cross 'BAND' Wagon, combining Entertainment with Rescue, E and R:
... And of course any up to date Disaster Relief BAND will bring: WiFi and Hot Spot \ Wireless \ Laptops \ Sound and Filming Crew \ and your $Ten Million BOND information on hand
"Mudslides, Missiles, Alien Abductions, Tornadoes, Rioting after Sporting Events, Pearl Harbor and World Trade-like events, Oil Fires, Disastrous Movie Premiers, and a plethora of National Disasters and not having mentioned Climate related human tossing calamities yet," explain those who have a stake in disasters. "Don't forget all the opportunity around the entire world, also."

That is so right! Glaciers melting, Pyroclastic clouds, Monsoons, Islands sinking into the oceans in Dubai, Neutron Star Matter hitting Earth, Vogons, ... not shabby stuff for the On-the-Spot READY Instant-it-Happens Disaster BAND ....
CONCLUSION:
Others, like BIONIC BEAUTY, Talking about most recent Disaster, Earthquake in Haiti:
GET on YOUR BAND-AID Wagon or Boat, or what ever you Got !!

CONCLUSION:
Others, like BIONIC BEAUTY, Talking about most recent Disaster, Earthquake in Haiti:
In times of natural disaster, our world seems to forget the boundaries that separate us. It’s truly awe-inspiring for me. These last few days, I have shed many tears while watching the news casts of the earthquake that devastated much of Haiti. Twitter and Facebook are still hotbeds of activity for information and for ways to help. But with anything, it’s best to be informed. When Michael DeVellis, the Executive Director of The Powder Group (which also publishes the my favorite On Makeup Magazine) sent me the information below, I immediately asked if I could share it with all the Bionic Beauties out there.
