Blogging about this is probably the riskiest thing we at MooPig have done. If you type in some of these gang names in faceBook, you will get hits for hitmen... no lie. Try searching faceBook for MS 13 and see for yourself.

On October 23, 2010, " ... reported by the Chronicle’s Dane Schiller, the Houston area is home to far more gang members than anywhere else in Texas. That, in itself, is not so surprising: All big cities have gangs, and the greater Houston area, with roughly 6 million people, is no exception. (Capo | October 23, 2010. HERE) ... "
'via Blog this'
EXCERPT | " ... in Harris and surrounding counties, ... notes that gang recruitment, with a younger, more violent membership, is at a record high. (capo. ibid.) ... "
Currently, [2010] according to the National Gang Threat Assessment, there are 225 gangs in the region, and their influence is spreading into the suburbs and surrounding areas as they become more international, interacting with enormous, well-financed Mexican cartels. The largest of these is the Houstones, with more than 2,230 members, as tallied by police. (That’s about 40 percent of the number of Houston Police Department officers, currently about 5,500.)
Texas based gangs are recruited by trans-national Mexican-cartels to do their bidding on both sides of the border. Prisons and schools provide the people to " ... routinely engage in
murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, robbery, auto theft, burglary, drug trafficking,
weapons trafficking, prostitution, human trafficking and money laundering. (LINK)..." Why do gangs join cartels? The cartels promise enormous profits to those who work with them.

According to the Texas Gang Threat Assessment 2010: "it is likely that the scope and degree of the gang violence in our communities will increase, especially in our major urban areas. ..."

A documentary hosted by Lisa Ling, of all people, states the motto for MS -13, is God/ Mother/ Gang ... Live for God, Live for your Mom, die for your gang.  See the Intro to the documentary here [youTube LINK].

The name for MS-13 is slang for Salvadoran Army Ants, or "Mara Salvatrucha" ... this gang started on a playground in Los Angeles by two immigrant Salvadorans.
Total Strength: The number of confirmed and suspected MS-13 members statewide is assessed to be over 500.
Organizational Effectiveness: MS-13 are loosely organized cliques with no known central hierarchy. There is limited communication between cliques within the same city as well as with other cliques in the state. Each clique has a leader -- referred to as a shot caller -- who makes decision for that particular clique. It has been reported that MS-13 cliques in Texas follow instructions from leaders in California and El Salvador.
Conclusion
If you are ambivalent about gangs, and not a gang member, then you are in the majority, because most people in Texas fail to recognize these groups.

Whether we feel personally affected by gang activity or not, the fact is that we are. Our law enforcement, educational and social services resources are strapped, our community’s human capital is being wasted, and our city is diminished. We should all be paying attention.

Ain't No More Cane

PHOTO's: Will the Real Blonde on Blonde image sign in please -- and hum a few bars of "Ain't no More Cane"?

Response to Pribek's Relentless attempts to Confuse Me, "Its all been ground down to molasses"
Retrieved by Pat Darnell [HERE]

Sometimes it pays dividends to go to sites that have been tenderly set up to preserve and protect valuable works. So in response to the full court press by Pribek [HERE] and many other places, here is the lucidity his question requires: Trying to stump me in my passion for Texas Hill country, Pribek wrote, "...any cane on the Brazos?" Link | May 30th, 2009 at 10:13 am

Therefore I answer: Cane is gone along the Brazos. It is a muddy fast moving, geological youngster of a river. There is no beaches or ox bows, nor lazy Huck Finn Islands found along the Brazos course. However, I will have to get back to you on the situation of how much cane can be found today, if 5% or 50% of its original marsh grasses...

The other connection, I think Mr Pribek is also trying to fool me with Bob Dylan and his Basement Tapes. I had the double album Blonde on Blonde, until someone absconded it. I probably should have drilled pin holes in the two records to signify them as mine. If you have my B on B, and you are reading this, please contact me and tell me how it has been going.

It turns out, I never really liked the album, since it's mixing is [low quality] questionable -- "...Blonde on Blonde has been issued in no fewer than eleven different forms, with marked differences in mixes and track lengths. No specific version has been established as canonical [wkpd]..."

I must have had one of the bad ones... eh?

One more little negative thing about Dylan; his singing voice puts a desire to avoid and reject his cuts. It is a clash of temperaments, I never have fully appreciated his nasal, deep-South, country attempt. That is because I grew up down here where the real thing can be heard and hated. I assume, and correct me if not possible, that Dylan is from a Northern rural Minnesota upbringing. His adaptation of the deep South Delta Blues Rock voice is an agitation as a shade fake in my ear. Call me a purist, but down home is down home... no?

To understand some of this would require one to work here with the scorching sun on your back, and impossible clay mud sticking to your boots. One has to stay hydrated like you cannot believe, and that is the tonal basis you find usually from New Orleans, to Black Baptist Churches of Houston near briny back waters and marshes along the Intracoastal Waterway located from the Rigolets, Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Canal to Industrial Canals in Texas .... a different breed lives down here.

Dylan is okay for trying, I suppose, but he has never been the real thing for my listening pleasure.

"This is actually a prison work song rather than a normal work song, if you feel like splitting hairs about it. It functions the same way as any work song, but the vocabulary is that of the Texas prisons and it is about prison life. There are many versions of it, the arrangement that the Band uses should be noted to the "king of the twelve string guitar" Huddie 'Leadbelly' Leadbetter. Bruce Jackson's book 'Wake Up Dead Man' has a lot of information about this song as well as other prison songs."

[ footnotes by Source:]
1. For all those without a grasp of American geography, the Brazos is a river in Texas which features in many prison songs because it runs past virtually all of the old prisons in Texas.
2. Old Hannah is the name given to sun.
3. Captain is one of the ranks in the hierarchy of prison guards, the man in charge of half the workers in a field. Also used outside the prisons to mean the White boss. In some of the old slave songs the singers call Jesus their captain.
4. Bully: an inmate working in the line. The word can also be used as a verb, in which case it means working hard.
5. Lifetime sentence that is.

Crime stats are out for 2008, and while it appears violent crimes are down in the twin cities compared to 2007, property crimes are up.

In Bryan, police investigated four murders in 2007 and 2008. Seven more sexual assaults were reported in 2008, while police investigated three more robberies.

Burglaries are up three percent, theft up two percent and vehicle thefts are up a whopping 41percent. Also, police investigated five more arsons than in 2007.

In College Station, zero murders were reported in 2008, compared to one in 2007. Meanwhile, 10 more sexual assaults were reported in 2008.

Robberies are up 18 percent, burglaries up 24 percent, theft up 16 percent and 11 more vehicle thefts were reported in 2008.

Both departments reported an increase in calls for service. Bryan police attribute this to better community contact and communication between police and residents.

The Bryan Police Department released this press release Tuesday:

The Bryan Police Department's preliminary UCR report
Bryan Police Department

The UCR program is administered at the state level by the Texas Department of Public Safety and at the national level by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These agencies collect and analyze data concerning index crimes in order to determine state and national trends in crime. The index crimes used in the UCR program include: murder/manslaughter, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, auto theft, and arson.

The Bryan Police Department received 83,915 calls for service in 2008. This number represents an increase of approximately 1,100 calls for service above what the Police Department received in 2007. The increase in calls for service was anticipated as a result of increased community contact and improved communications between the citizens of Bryan and the Police Department. The Police Department also recorded a 2% increase in total reported Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Part I crime in the City of Bryan during 2008. This 2% increase equates to approximately 103 more offenses reported to the Police Department than was reported in 2007.

In 2008, Chief Morrow started two programs to make the City of Bryan the safest City in the Great State of Texas. The Neighborhood Enforcement Team (N.E.T.) was launched and tasked with utilizing problem-oriented policing strategies to resolve the issues of crime, fear of crime, disorder, and decay affecting the quality of life in Bryan. The N.E.T. strives to build partnerships with Bryan residents, business owners, and religious leaders to foster better community involvement in problem solving. Chief Morrow also launched the Intelligence Unit to specifically target those individuals considered habitual offenders and who represent the greatest threat to community safety. The Intelligence Unit gathers information received from citizens, offense reports, and arrests reports. This information is gathered and shared with officers from the Bryan Police Department as well as other law enforcement agencies.

The Bryan Police Department anticipated a higher number of offenses due to the partnership with our citizens, which encourages them to report crimes. It is through the partnership with the Citizens of Bryan and the Police Department that the numbers did not increase as substantially as had been anticipated. This achievement is due in part to our success in removing habitual offenders from the streets.

There were four (4) murders and zero (0) negligent manslaughter cases reported in 2008. This number did not increase or decrease from 2007.

There was a 21% increase in reported sexual assault offenses in 2008. The 2007 UCR data reflects thirty-four (34) sexual assaults as compared to forty-one (41) reported in 2008. The Bryan Police Department has initiated a crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses. For more information contact Sgt. Robert Smith with the Training Division at 979-209-5363 and ask about SHARP training.

There was a 3% increase in the number of reported robbery offenses in 2006. Department records for 2007 reflect ninety-seven (97) reported robberies as compared to the one hundred (100) reported in 2008. The Bryan Police Department has initiated a criminal; intelligence program to help identify and apprehend individuals involved in robbery. A crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses is available for local business owners. For more information about crime prevention programs contact Sgt. Demond Oliver with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team at 979-209-5539.

Reported burglary offenses increased by 3% in 2008. One thousand (1,000) burglaries were reported in 2007, and One thousand and twenty-nine (1,029) were reported in 2008. The Bryan Police Department has initiated a criminal; intelligence program to help identify and apprehend individuals involved in burglary. A crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses is available for local business owners and home owners. For more information about crime prevention programs contact Sgt. Demond Oliver with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team at 979-209-5539.

There was a 2% increase in the number of reported theft offenses in 2008. Records for 2007 reflect two thousand, four hundred and four (2,404) reported thefts in 2007 as compared to two thousand, four hundred and forty one (2,441) reported thefts in 2008. A crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses is available for local business owners and home owners. For more information about crime prevention programs contact Sgt. Demond Oliver with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team at 979-209-5539.

There was a 41% increase in the number of reported motor vehicle theft offenses in 2008. Department records for 2008 reflect one hundred and ninety-five (195) reported motor vehicle thefts as compared to one hundred and thirty-eight (138) reported in 2007. A crime prevention and education program to address these types of offenses is available for local business and home owners. For more information about crime prevention programs contact Sgt. Demond Oliver with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team at 979-209-5539.

There was a 44% increase in reported arson cases in 2008. Records for 2008 reflect thirteen (13) reported arsons as compared to eight (8) reported in 2007. This increase reflects the Bryan Fire Department's continued commitment to aggressively investigate and identify cases of arson within the community.
