The Bryan Police Department released this press release Tuesday:
The Bryan Police Department's preliminary UCR report
Bryan Police Department
The UCR program is administered at the state level by the Texas Department of Public Safety and at the national level by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These agencies collect and analyze data concerning index crimes in order to determine state and national trends in crime. The index crimes used in the UCR program include: murder/manslaughter, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, auto theft, and arson.
The Bryan Police Department received 83,915 calls for service in 2008. This number represents an increase of approximately 1,100 calls for service above what the Police Department received in 2007. The increase in calls for service was anticipated as a result of increased community contact and improved communications between the citizens of Bryan and the Police Department. The Police Department also recorded a 2% increase in total reported Uniform Crime Report (UCR) Part I crime in the City of Bryan during 2008. This 2% increase equates to approximately 103 more offenses reported to the Police Department than was reported in 2007.
In 2008, Chief Morrow started two programs to make the City of Bryan the safest City in the Great State of Texas. The Neighborhood Enforcement Team (N.E.T.) was launched and tasked with utilizing problem-oriented policing strategies to resolve the issues of crime, fear of crime, disorder, and decay affecting the quality of life in Bryan. The N.E.T. strives to build partnerships with Bryan residents, business owners, and religious leaders to foster better community involvement in problem solving. Chief Morrow also launched the Intelligence Unit to specifically target those individuals considered habitual offenders and who represent the greatest threat to community safety. The Intelligence Unit gathers information received from citizens, offense reports, and arrests reports. This information is gathered and shared with officers from the Bryan Police Department as well as other law enforcement agencies.
The Bryan Police Department anticipated a higher number of offenses due to the partnership with our citizens, which encourages them to report crimes. It is through the partnership with the Citizens of Bryan and the Police Department that the numbers did not increase as substantially as had been anticipated. This achievement is due in part to our success in removing habitual offenders from the streets.
