About this author edit data
Hunter Stockton Thompson was an American journalist and author, famous for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He is credited as the creator of Gonzo journalism, a style of reporting where reporters involve themselves in the action to such a degree that they become the central figures of their stories. He is also known for his promotion and use of psychedelics and other mind-altering substances (and to a lesser extent, alcohol and firearms), his libertarian views, and his iconoclastic contempt for authority. He died at his own hand in 2005. [LINK]

Fear and Loathing in Modern Media: Hunter S. Thompson on Journalism, Politics, and the Subjective | Brain Pickings: "An iconoclastic hero of the written word, Hunter S. Thompson (July 18, 1937–February 20, 2005) endures as the godfather of “gonzo journalism” — that once-radical, now-ubiquitous style of New Journalism that does away with claims of capital-O objectivity and instead inserts the author into the story as an active first-person narrator. Thompson, in fact, was characteristically unafraid of vocalizing his opinions as a keen observer of and lively, if not hedonistic, participant in culture. But his opinions of journalism in particular he held and proselytized with especial zest — what it is and what it ought to be, what pretensions it could use to divest and what moral obligations it should at all costs uphold. In Better Than Sex: Confessions of a Political Junkie (public library), the fourth volume of his Gonzo Papers originally published in 1994, Thompson admonishes ..."

CONCLUSION
It turns out that the Father of Blogging might be Hunter S. Thompson, and his Gonzo journalism. The discourse that propels journalists into action begins with the "Big O," Objectivity. Seems this is not really the case for journalists to exist, according to Thompson.

But in our limited perdition of blogging and writing, we at MooPig Wisdom discover that to be a writer there must be a reader. So to you dear reader, all three of you, we repeat Hunter S. Thompson's words: "...Sacrificing good men to journalism is like sending William Faulkner to work for TIME magazine..."

MooPig Home School Department :: "MOOC's"

Massive Open Online Courses
Retrieved by Pat Darnell  |  Feb 27, 2013  |  Bryan TX

UC Irvine professor stops teaching online course in dispute - latimes.com: "Gary Matkin, UC Irvine's dean of Continuing Education, Distance Learning and Summer Session, said in a statement that McKenzie is "not accustomed [as few are] in teaching university-level material to an open, large and quite diverse audience, including those who were not seriously committed to achieving the learning objectives of the course or who decided not to or could not gain access to supplemental learning materials." Future lessons and assignments, as developed by McKenzie, will continue to be presented, Matkin said."

The action by Richard A. McKenzie, an emeritus professor in the UC Irvine business school, highlights the uncertainties faculty face in adapting traditional face-to-face classes to the emerging universe of Massive Open Online Courses, known as MOOCs.

Under the Coursera model, much of the grading is automatic or performed by fellow students. Professors videotape lectures in advance and often comment in general on message boards without answering questions. Although enrollment is free, Coursera charges students $30 to $99 for a completion certificate.
" ... The big story this week is that Coursera is in talks with the American Council on Education to grant degrees for online classes offered through the network of MOOC courses that are currently free and not-for-credit. For that to happen, the parties would have to ensure they could prevent cheating and meet other academic standards. Colleges would also have to decide whether they accept Coursera credits. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is funding the review and several other MOOC ... -related developments. -(Wired Academic on Thursday, November 15, 2012.  LINK) ... "

MooPig Department of MEME's Report :: Best Memes Of 2012

Snagged by Pat Darnell and the Herd  |  Dec 30, 2012  |  Bryan TX

If you are looking for an analysis of MEME's that were most popular last year, well, MooPig Department of MEME has no such statement. In fact we are just catching on to the whole idea. This coming to light by way of one of our editor's sixteen year old son's habit of resolving issues through MEME's.

MEME's are not very well defined, but they are like "Google images." You can page through them for hours and giggle. How any one Meme migrates to a billion views, again that is mysterious. It is not Darwinian, nor Freudian, and plainly not stereotypical.

As a teaching tool, if teachers could harness the MEME, and not be the subject of one their selves, one could influence the minds of millions.

Of course it will eventually have to become an advertising tool, and that will pay someone's bills. At present it is in its peak of creepy, clandestine, surreal Internet stuff for your viewing pleasure. It is a mind map of some degree of alpha wave secularism.

What, me worry?

Best Memes Of 2012 - Business Insider: "As the only YouTube video to ever reach 1 billion views, Psy's "Gangnam Style" is easily the best meme of 2012. Everyone learned how to do the "Gangnam Style" dance and it became a football celebration."

Here are the top MEME's for the year; if you can put them in a category... good luck with that:

Call Me Maybe
McKayla Maroney is not impressed
Grumpy Cat
Ridiculously Photogenic Guy
"Gangnam Style became a global hit, despite its language barrier, mainly because of the music video, particularly the horse dance and the dress code that hardly need a lot of explanation," Know Your Meme editor Brad Kim tells us.
