Use this article as an introduction to Open Source. It was written in 2010. But if you think about it, if the LINKS it publishes are still around today, 2014, then you might have a good indicator that these do really work.

Does Open Source mean Free? Nothing in the world is FREE... so ? What's the  real cost? All we can figure at this level of discovery is that Google Summer of Code acts as developer for many Open Source projects.

If you are trying to go into business today Open Source could help you through the first three years ... the default years of development when you show very little profits, if you know what you are doing. Other topics that interest me:

Downloading online Open Source can be risky. What you get when you download might be tagged with a virus or two. New softwares can mess with your databases, or your operating system, and might alter your start up. We don't know the answer to any of that. It would take a great deal of research to figure which Open Source delivers with fewest complications.

CONCLUSION
What is the real cost of Open Source for the start-up? At this point the real cost is time: time it takes to learn a new software. Learning curves for new businesses will dictate their ability to compete. If a business, or the individual, has used a licensed software in the past, he/she/it will find a similar open source software to use. If the business start-up is highly proprietary, it may require costly licensed custom software anyway.

I have a son who has successfully used Ubuntu for the last eight years in his business.

A New Fed Thought for 'Too Big to Fail' Banks: Shrink Them - NYTimes.com: "Mr. Tarullo said much had been done to make the financial system safer, through the two main overhauls that came after the crisis. Those are the Dodd-Frank Act, passed by Congress in 2010, and the internationally agreed bank regulations known as Basel III.

In particular, these initiatives have made banks hold more capital, a part of a bank’s balance sheet that can serve as a buffer against losses. Before the crash of 2008, banks had insufficient capital, which stoked the fears that swept the global financial system. Taxpayers had to step in and provide new capital as part of efforts to restore confidence.

Still, Mr. Tarullo sees remaining areas of concern. He focused on the markets where Wall Street banks borrow huge sums of money for short periods. They use their borrowings in these so-called wholesale markets to then buy assets. But in times of stress, like 2008, these markets can dry up. Deprived of their lifeblood, banks rush to sell off the assets they bought with their wholesale borrowings, which can set off a wider collapse."

Don't you just love how money loving fools dick around with terminology? Wholesale, periods, assets, insufficient capital, comptrollers, global financial systems ... on and on. This week, beginning of May, at MooPig Financial Trends Department we are featuring a round of New York Times articles dealing with "Post Collapse" banking duct taping.

Yawn.

We get it, you can't even spell "punitive interest..." but for certain we must try to sort this out. Other wise we are seeing the collapse of the American Empire as we know it. We "must" get past these frustrated academicians who think money is science.

Can anyone say for certain just how bad it really is? Commentators must admit that they say confusing things on purpose, just to keep the status of banking worldwide the way it is... meant for only persons at the top.

UC Irvine professor stops teaching online course in dispute - latimes.com: "Gary Matkin, UC Irvine's dean of Continuing Education, Distance Learning and Summer Session, said in a statement that McKenzie is "not accustomed [as few are] in teaching university-level material to an open, large and quite diverse audience, including those who were not seriously committed to achieving the learning objectives of the course or who decided not to or could not gain access to supplemental learning materials." Future lessons and assignments, as developed by McKenzie, will continue to be presented, Matkin said."

The action by Richard A. McKenzie, an emeritus professor in the UC Irvine business school, highlights the uncertainties faculty face in adapting traditional face-to-face classes to the emerging universe of Massive Open Online Courses, known as MOOCs.

Under the Coursera model, much of the grading is automatic or performed by fellow students. Professors videotape lectures in advance and often comment in general on message boards without answering questions. Although enrollment is free, Coursera charges students $30 to $99 for a completion certificate.

The big story this week is that Coursera is in talks with the American Council on Education to grant degrees for online classes offered through the network of MOOC courses that are currently free and not-for-credit. For that to happen, the parties would have to ensure they could prevent cheating and meet other academic standards. Colleges would also have to decide whether they accept Coursera credits. I just listened to Alex Jones being "interviewed" by Piers Morgan ... more of a tongue lashing of the host. Piers Morgan did not get a word in edgewise, as Alex Jones berated Morgan, his show, and his lineage.
