What a Long Strange Trip it has Been
mashed articles of Jim Marquis by Pat Darnell  |  Apr 6, 2014  | Bryan TX

Major Conflict: Dictatorship of the Dollars: " Dictatorship of the Dollars  -- The Right is currently celebrating the Supreme Court's recent decision regarding campaign contributions. However, I have to believe they'll be singing a different tune when Adelson and the Koch brothers are replaced by younger, more liberal tech tycoons (Jim Marquis, Apr 6, 2014. LINK) ..."

“Money in politics may at times seem repugnant to some," he wrote, "but so too does much of what the 1st Amendment vigorously protects. If the 1st Amendment protects flag burning, funeral protests, and Nazi parades — despite the profound offense such spectacles cause — it surely protects political campaign speech despite popular opposition ( Robin Abcarian. April 2, 2014. paraphrased Justice Stephen G. Breyer. no date. LINK )...”

In his blog, Major Conflict, Jim Marquis shows us a twist in the wind of the time. Billionaires being replaced by billionaires.

Tech Tycoons ... bring 'em on ... MooPig Tech Coroner Department acknowledges the replacement of billionaires with younger billionaires ... probably with similar results, but nevertheless, it should be mildly interesting. Bill and Melinda Gates are leading the pack by trying to save all the children in Africa.

We must be talking about a new form of a high level of corruption based on Meritocracy, you know, from garage business start-ups to mega-billion industrialist slave driver multi-national corporations. Rags, to slave laboring sweat shops, to unimaginable riches, to philanthropist ... all in one life-time. Wow.

For those who die early, S. Jobs, we will have to sit and wait for his wife and offspring to spread $billions to what they perceive needs philanthropic-ing. Can't wait.

CONCLUSION
In its day Television was "high tech" ... yesiree Bob... and one of the rags to riches top dudes of that time was Art Linkletter,  [Arthur Gordon "Art" Linkletter (July 17, 1912 – May 26, 2010)]: "... Two of his television shows, House Party and People Are Funny, hold the top places for the longest-running shows in broadcast television history. Now in his ninetieth year, Linkletter is known as an entertainer, an author, a businessman, and a philanthropist. (LINK)..."

"... Art and Lois Linkletter outlived three of their five children. On October 4, 1969, 20-year-old Diane died after jumping out of her sixth-floor kitchen window.[1] Linkletter claimed that her death was drug related because she was on, or having a flashback from, an LSD trip (toxicology tests later determined there were no drugs in Diane's system at the time of her death). After Diane's death, Linkletter spoke out against drugs to prevent children from straying into a drug habit. His record, "We Love You, Call Collect", recorded before her death, featured a discussion about permissiveness in modern society, along with a rebuttal by Diane, titled "Dear Mom and Dad". The record won a 1970 Grammy Award for the "Best Spoken Word Recording".[14] Robert Linkletter died in an automobile accident on September 12, 1980.[15] Son Arthur Jack Linkletter died from lymphoma in 2007.[16 (Y Ikki Peed Ya. " ... He's a nonstop raconteur, and his life is a living history of the pioneering years of radio and TV. Abandoned as a baby in Canada, in 1912, he was adopted by a one-legged preacher and his wife. "We were really poor -- as poor as a church mouse. But I had one of the greatest assets a kid can have, a loving family." With just $3 to his name, he set out on his own at age 16 as a hobo riding the rails, which was not a life of poverty but "a great way to see America. I never begged, never borrowed, never stole. I worked all sorts of odd jobs (STEPHEN MOORE. Updated March 11, 2009. LINK) ..."
Tech-tycoons, what will be your legacy? Will you buy the SCOTUS?

UC Irvine professor stops teaching online course in dispute - latimes.com: "Gary Matkin, UC Irvine's dean of Continuing Education, Distance Learning and Summer Session, said in a statement that McKenzie is "not accustomed [as few are] in teaching university-level material to an open, large and quite diverse audience, including those who were not seriously committed to achieving the learning objectives of the course or who decided not to or could not gain access to supplemental learning materials." Future lessons and assignments, as developed by McKenzie, will continue to be presented, Matkin said."

'via Blog this'
The action by Richard A. McKenzie, an emeritus professor in the UC Irvine business school, highlights the uncertainties faculty face in adapting traditional face-to-face classes to the emerging universe of Massive Open Online Courses, known as MOOCs.

Under the Coursera model, much of the grading is automatic or performed by fellow students. Professors videotape lectures in advance and often comment in general on message boards without answering questions. Although enrollment is free, Coursera charges students $30 to $99 for a completion certificate.
" ... The big story this week is that Coursera is in talks with the American Council on Education to grant degrees for online classes offered through the network of MOOC courses that are currently free and not-for-credit. For that to happen, the parties would have to ensure they could prevent cheating and meet other academic standards. Colleges would also have to decide whether they accept Coursera credits. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is funding the review and several other MOOC ... -related developments. -(Wired Academic on Thursday, November 15, 2012.  LINK) ... "

MooPig FWD Email Department :: "Supreme Stooges"

Yes, We are Experiencing a Dry Spell in Leadership
Retrieved by Pat Darnell | Feb 17, 2013 | Bryan TX

"THE THREE SUPREME COURT STOOGES — (Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito) At this critical time in our nation's history when our leaders need to stand for fairness and justice, these three knuckleheads are doing their best to permanently tip the balance of power to the richest Americans and most powerful corporations. Their decision to skip this week's State of the Union address represents the lowest character from our nation's highest court members. Perhaps their worst decision was Citizens United which gives corporations the rights of people.

“Egregious” doesn't even begin to describe the negative impact of this decision on our democracy. It has opened the floodgate to groups that can now officially buy our government and make decisions further enriching those groups. They have a lock on our future. We the people must stand against this tyranny. This week we saw a true patriot, Elizabeth Warren face down federal regulators for failing to take Wall Street's banksters to task. So there is hope. Share this link to depose these three stooges."

Branes, M-Theory, String Theory, and Eleven Dimensions

Black Matter reorders the Mega-Universe as Universes Expand
by Pat Darnell

"Through the Wormhole" [HERE] is a series on the television, narrated by Morgan Freeman. The viewer is treated to less visual in lieu of more discussion. Theories he presents are up to the minute ideas springing out of subway traveling scientists, today, who quandary in their conundrums: particularly what is there before the Big Bang?

Seems that three dimensions is governed by at least seven more dimensions out there. And added is one more dimension of Time, making for eleven factors. Nothing is squandered. The Quantizer is M-Theory as it explains we are part of a life supporting "Membranes" or "Branes" that are plentifully repeated trillion-fold in our infinite mega-universe space surroundings. Black Matter, also plentiful, is the substance that pushes, and reorders, our disordered Brane of existence back into stasis.

Branes actually at some point along their planes of existence are prone to collide. Yes that is correct. Colliding at a point of commonality, or singularity along both Branes ... well I wish to welcome you to the new "Brane Industries." Now the Big Bang is more eloquently described, not as a springing forth from nothingness, but a collision of Branes.

Thus, a more eloquent ballet of events unfolds in the First Act of  creation moments.

Thank you very mussssh.

Report from the Middle :: Converging Arguments

A more Special Relativity
by Pat Darnell

"I am by heritage a Jew, by citizenship a Swiss, and by makeup a human being, and only a human being, without any special attachment to any state or national entity whatsoever. " (Eisnstein, Albert. Letter to Alfred Kneser; 7 June 1918; Doc. 560 in The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, Vol. 8)

Bryan TX, 05.04.2010 | Call it what you want, convergence, theories of everything, or just plan everything is everything. The truth is out there, and actually it is inside you and me.

The greatest accomplishment of our computer age is the mapping of the human genome. Genetic jumps can be detected now that we have a molecular makeup of our selves.

The second greatest advent in our otherwise meager lives is our capability to see and detect distant celestial events via Hubble, and, International Space Station. It has become a commonplace routine for smart, well-trained people to catch a space shuttle up to the ISS, and check out what bothers and stimulates their querying mental processes.

A trip to the ISS, seeing first-hand all that magnified, unfathomable, spectacle, while detached from earth, floating weightless, certainly is the most wonderful thing a person of cranium unrest can have today. This juice, once blended in converging arguments, must make for some Grade AAA pre-frontal cerebellum Mohave mojo.

It is what Hawking has tried to express: Theory of Everything, or TOE. It is the first time mankind in its present state has posed a theory that connects the infinitely small with the infinitely large. Unification theory and the connection was the theory Einstein was pondering in his final years.

Two ideas expressed in modern times in converging arguments come to mind:
1. Arthur C. Clarke formulated the following three "laws" of prediction:
  • When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is probably wrong.
  • The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
  • Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. (Arthur C. Clarke. essay "Hazards of Prophecy: The Failure of Imagination", in Profiles of the Future, 1962)
2. "The most incomprehensible thing about our existence is that it is comprehensible." *(Einstein)

Physics - Infinitely small as well as infinitely large (SOURCE)

I say mankind in its present state: did you notice that one? The HISTORY Channel has a show "Ancient Aliens" where it argues we have been cousins to extra-terrestrial beings for most of our history, starting with ancient civilizations. Evidences in cartouche made by ancient artisans, or scribes, show us hanging out with spacemen visitors, in eras 50,000 years ago. "What if life on earth began in outer space?" asks the show.

We are not alone in this universe. We are not alone in two universes. To believe in a narrow band of human existence has become, shall we say: "old school?" HISTORY Channel has rattled my tree many times. It now has rattled me with this show: Ancient Aliens. Where's the proof?
"When I examine myself and my methods of thought I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge."
(Einstein, Albert. Cited as conversation between Einstein and János Plesch in János: the story of a doctor. 1947, János Plesch, trans. Edward FitzGerald, Pub. V. Gollancz.)
Technology from an advanced human race can be a real attention getter. And there is no lack of wonder in the human cerebellum. Humans wonder about everything; everything from origin of things, to termination of things, and life, and is the quest of every mother's son, father's daughter, and their dogs. Still with me?
"Whether you can observe a thing or not depends on the theory which you use. It is the theory which decides what can be observed." (Eisenstein, Albert. Objecting to the placing of observables at the heart of the new quantum mechanics, during Heisenberg's 1926 lecture at Berlin; related by Heisenberg, quoted in Unification of Fundamental Forces. 1990. by Abdus Salam ISBN 0521371406)
Converging arguments appear every time humans dicker about things of utmost largeness, and things uttermost small... do you agree? This is why this is all about a more special relativity. We should be most grateful to have these amazing avenues to travel to greater understanding, available right now; open book.

Unfortunately, on the fringes is a lot of head banging and eating of sand. Why the human race acts at this time of all times like goats in the mists, belays our duty, hangs our judgement, and thwarts any efforts for peace.

The infinitely large is directly attached to the infinitely small. There, it is said. Now look for it!
"Our experience hitherto justifies us in trusting that nature is the realization of the simplest that is mathematically conceivable. I am convinced that purely mathematical construction enables us to find those concepts and those lawlike connections between them that provide the key to the understanding of natural phenomena. Useful mathematical concepts may well be suggested by experience, but in no way can they be derived from it. Experience naturally remains the sole criterion of the usefulness of a mathematical construction for physics. But the actual creative principle lies in mathematics. Thus, in a certain sense, I take it to be true that pure thought can grasp the real, as the ancients had dreamed." (Einstein, Albert. from On the Method of Theoretical Physics, p. 183. The Herbert Spencer Lecture, delivered at Oxford. 10 June 1933. Quoted in Einstein's Philosophy of Science)
I do not want the peace that passeth understanding. I want the understanding which bringeth peace. ~ Helen Keller

* NOTE:
The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.
While this often-quoted version is given in Einstein: A Biography (1954) by Antonina Vallentin, p. 24, as from Einstein's article "Physics and Reality" in Journal of the Franklin Institute (March 1936), in the actual article "Physics and Reality," reprinted in Out of My Later Years (1956), the quote is:
"One may say "the eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility." (This rendition reads as if he is quoting or paraphrasing the statement of someone else — perhaps Immanuel Kant, whom he cites in the next sentence.)
Other variants:
"The eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility… The fact that it is comprehensible is a miracle."
"One may say the eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility."
As quoted in Disturbing the Universe (1979), by Freeman Dyson Ch. 5
"The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is at all comprehensible."

MooPig Joins Math Quiz by "The Universe of Discourse"

Fri, 22 May 2009 | The Universe of Discourse

A child is bitten by a dog every 0.07 seconds...
I read in the newspaper today that letter carriers were bitten by dogs 3,000 times last year. Curiously, this is not a round number; it is exact. The article then continued: "children ... are 900 times more likely to be bitten than letter carriers."

This is obviously nonsense, because suppose the post office employs half a million letter carriers. The actual number is actually about half that, but we are doing a back-of-the-envelope estimate of plausibility. Then the bite rate is six bites per thousand letter carriers per year, and if children are 900 times more likely to be bitten, they are getting bitten at a rate of 5,400 bites per thousand children per year, or 5.4 bites per child. Insert your own joke here, or use the prefabricated joke framework in the title of this article.

I wrote to the reporter, who attributed the claim to the Postal Bulletin 22258 of 7 May 2009. It does indeed appear there. I am trying to track down the ultimate source, but I suspect I will not get any farther. I have discovered that the "900 times" figure appears in the Post Office's annual announcements of Dog Bite Prevention Month as far back as 2004, but not as far back as 2002.

Meantime, what are the correct numbers?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have a superb on-line database of injury data. It immediately delivers the correct numbers for dog bite rate among children:
[For Example excerpt provided here:]
Age | Number of injuries | Population | Rate per 100,000
0  |   2,302   |  4,257,020  |  54.08
1 7,100 4,182,171 169.77
2 10,049 4,110,458 244.47
3 10,355 4,111,354 251.86
4 9,920 4,063,122 244.15
5 7,915 4,031,709 196.32
6 8,829 4,089,126 215.91
7 6,404 3,935,663 162.72
8 8,464 3,891,755 217.48
9 8,090 3,901,375 207.36
10 7,388 3,927,298 188.11
11 6,501 4,010,171 162.11
12 7,640 4,074,587 187.49
13 5,876 4,108,962 142.99
14 4,720 4,193,291 112.56
15 5,477 4,264,883 128.42
16 4,379 4,334,265 101.03
17 4,459 4,414,523 101.01
Total 133,560   |  82,361,752   |  162.16

According to the USPS 2008 Annual Report, in 2008 the USPS employed 211,661 city delivery carriers and 68,900 full-time rural delivery carriers, a total of 280,561. Since these 280,561 carriers received 3,000 dog bites, the rate per 100,000 carriers per year is 1069.29 bites.

So the correct statistic is not that children are 900 times more likely than carriers to be bitten, but rather that carriers are 6.6 times as likely as children to be bitten, 5.6 times if you consider only children under 13. Incidentally, your toddler's chance of being bitten in the course of a year is only about a quarter of a percent, ceteris paribus.

Where did 900 come from? I have no idea.

There are 293 times as many children as there are letter carriers, and they received a total of 44.5 times as many bites. The "900" figure is all over the Internet, despite being utterly wrong. Even with extensive searching, I was not able to find this factoid in the brochures or reports of any other reputable organization, including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the Humane Society of the Uniited States. It appears to be the invention of the USPS.

EPILOGUE:
Also in the same newspaper, the new Indian restaurant on Baltimore avenue was advertising that they "specialize in vegetarian and non-vegetarian food". It's just a cornucopia of stupidity today, isn't it?

(Universe of Discourse, the. 22.May.2009. Article Links and words, Retrieved entirely from source today by Pat Darnell for the purpose of celebrating plausibility and the number 900)

Epilogue:
Pit Bull Attacks | "Occur when pets lack PACK STRUCTURE"
Pit Bulls and Rots account for 67% of fatal dog attacks ...

Oh, No; here we go again... 67% of what? [the END ??]
