MooPig Education Department :: "A Plausible School of Villainry"

Education and the Arts
Mashed articles by Pat Darnell  |  Jan 22, 2014  |  Bryan TX

[Picture LINK] The Maurice Strong School of Strong Villains

To have a story line one needs a villain and a hero. It is true for any form of story telling. The referenced article mentions that believable villains do not exist in today's modern cinema. Depictions are not realistic, and tend to stereotype villain characters. Woe is me.

And I thought every villain is a master mind criminal, with a fortune hid away from his nemesis's. What the article suggests is that one needs an advanced psychology degree in order to characterize a realistic villain today.

This is why our editors in MooPig Education Department think it is a good time to start developing good villains in primary and secondary schools. "We should start our young thespians at an early age to make certain there are plenty of realistic villains available to cinema, Internet, and for what ever comes next," said R. B. Guiles, editor in chief of MooPig Education Department.

"Too many villains let their own ego's get involved in their characterizations," said Sarah P. Body, MooPig Disney Liaison. "With primary psychological research applied to youngsters at tender ages, we may see a shift to more plausible villains in the future."

Why psychopathic film villains are rarely realistic — and why it matters | MinnPost: "But just how clinically realistic are those portrayals? Not very — with a handful of exceptions, according to a paper published recently in the Journal of Forensic Sciences. This finding is of interest to more than just film buffs. Other research has shown that films exert a strong influence on people’s perceptions of mental illness."

'via Blog this'
"You’ll find an abstract of the study at the Journal of Forensic Sciences’ website, but, unfortunately, the study itself (with its list of 126 psychopathic villains) is behind a paywall."

CONCLUSION
We would like to call our new "School of Plausible Villainry" the Maurice Strong School of Strong Villains. In due course, as people get piled higher and deeper college degrees, some will become authors of better villains, to go along with their unstrung heroes.

MooPig 'Stuff No One Wants to Hear About' Department :: "Sumangali Workers"

In India the Untouchables are not the Thugs nor the G-Men

“We are hopeful that these suggestions by the advocates are helpful to us to get us back the money from the company which failed to pay even after the stipulated period,” said Mupidathi, an 18 year old girl who was cheated of nearly `50,000 after working for a period of 3 years in a cotton mill in Tirupattur.
EXCERPT  | " ... These girls work in a camp based setting where they are not allowed to go anywhere. They are made to work for more than 12 hours a day; some are sexually harassed, not paid even after end of the agreement. Almost 90 per cent of the workers employed in these industries are bonded laborers under Apprentice act. Legally we have not been able to do much things as the industries have strong political connections,” said Joseph Victor Raj, State Convener, CACL – TN and PY.

To address this issue legally and ensure protection of female children, many advocates from Chennai High court were invited to present their suggestions and ideas that could prevent such exploitation in future. (©2013 The New Indian Express. November 23, 2013 in Chennai. LINK) ... "

I Tried to See Where My T-Shirt Was Made, and the Factory Sent Thugs After Me | Mother Jones: "Indeed, some Western companies have taken measures to discourage their suppliers from using sumangali labor. Levi Strauss and Co. provides financial support to SAVE, while Gap helped establish the Tirupur Stakeholders Forum, which sets detailed ethical guidelines for factories. More than 80 companies, including Gap, H and M, and Walmart, have joined an industry group called the Ethical Trading Initiative, ETI, which works with NGOs, Non-governmental Organizations, to educate workers about recruiting schemes and is trying to reduce the sumangali contract terms from three years to six months. But Peter McAllister, the director of ETI, would not speak specifically about any of the Indian companies whose factories I investigated, nor their Western buyers, because the group is concerned about the delicate relationship it has with the companies." If you, dear reader, are looking for a time and place of origin for this batch of acronyms, we could offer this: "... The Department for International Development, DFID, is a United Kingdom government department with a Cabinet Minister in charge. It was separated from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1997. The goal of the department is "to promote sustainable development and eliminate world poverty (y ikki peed ya. LINK) ... "

In 2007 this report was made:

CONCLUSION
Somehow the story about indentured slavery of sumangali girls is getting out, but shameless fabric mills just get better at hiding their "internationally" illegal labor practices. As is the case for so many Transnational Manufacturing schemes, different stages of the fabric process are compartmentalized. "Just how bad is it?"... no one seems to be on top of this flesh empire who will speak about it. If you try to talk in person with would be spokespersons about the status of workers in fabric industries, you are shunned and threatened. It is quite difficult to find one whistle-blower in the whole supply chain of fabric manufacturing.

MooPig Home School Department :: "John Taylor Gatto"

The Fourth Purpose
Mashed by Pat Darnell  |  July 18, 2013  |  Bryan TX

[Picture LINK]

While experts carry on about the "enigma of compulsory education" in the USA, John Taylor Gatto is making a documentary about it. Our education drama is a spoiler because Education is paid for by public funds, and free to all the children. If it were not "free," believe me, parents and children would fight in the streets for the chance to go to school.

Deciding on how to spend the mountain of money that is our public education system has become an accountant's trick. Our politicians who pose as school administrators parlay all day long on "problems of our school system in terms of engineering solutions—longer school days, Phonics vs. Whole Word, merit pay for teachers, metal detectors, bigger districts, smaller class size."

The article suggests that we have lost any real purpose of education: "if the first three purposes are to create good people, good citizens, and good lives, as history suggests, then why have we allowed the Managerial Fourth Purpose to dominate what is really occurring in our 100,000 school buildings?. (2000-2003 The Odysseus Group. LINK) ..." Sometimes it seems the purpose of education is to produce non-voting taxpayers, and that's all.

In 1991, Mr. Gatto resigned from teaching in New York because "He didn't want to harm children anymore." We think that those who have fought the good fight of American education, and lost battles, usually tend to their wounds by writing an expose on the system. One of these whistle-blowers should have by now produced the definitive rebuttal to our Public Education debacle.
(2000-2003 The Odysseus Group. LINK)
" ... The Fourth Purpose, a 3-part, 6-hour documentary series will be the first film to ask this fundamental question. The series will tackle the American school system: present, past, and future—its anomalies, its history, and the alternatives. The idea is to throw a bucket of ice-cold water in the faces of pundits, experts, and bureaucrats. The intention is to radically shift the context within which people view schooling by offering a ‘unified field theory’ of how and why our school system is so deeply dysfunctional. And then, once we have everyone’s attention, to show what people might do about it. ... "
John Taylor Gatto Biography: "Gatto's office is in New York City, his home in Oxford, New York, where he is currently at work on a documentary film about the nature of modern schooling entitled The Fourth Purpose, with his friend and former student, Roland Legiardi-Laura. For more information about this film, visit The Fourth Purpose.

Gatto has been married for forty years to the same woman, and has two grown children and a cat. He hopes to build a rural retreat and library for the use of families pondering local and personal issues of school reform. John is available as a speaker. "

MooPig Home School Department :: "Universities" PART ONE

Treatment by Pat Darnell | Apr 12, 2013 | Bryan TX

[Picture LINK]

The Practical University - NYTimes.com:
"What is a university for?

Are universities mostly sorting devices to separate smart and hard-working high school students from their less-able fellows so that employers can more easily identify them? Are universities factories for the dissemination of job skills? Are universities mostly boot camps for adulthood, where young people learn how to drink moderately, fornicate meaningfully and hand things in on time? (DAVID BROOKS. Published: April 4, 2013. LINK) ... "

'via Blog this'
" ... A recent article in the Washington Post began with the statement that today’s college students “may be part of the last generation for which ‘going to college’ means packing up, getting a dorm room and listening to tenured professors.” By using these three aspects of college life – packing up, dorm rooms, and tenured professors – the writer was able to clearly illustrate the ritualized process of traditional university education, setting the stage for major changes coming in the very near future.
In 2007 I released a paper on the future of education, culminating an 18 month effort to probe the likely evolution of a system that has become emotionally linked with many of our country’s and the world’s deficiencies. (By Futurist Thomas Frey. no date. LINK) ... "
Thomas Frey describes in his article deficiencies that come with dominant world powers. He relates dominant world power with a kind of tunnel vision mentality. The Romans, while in power, did not add much to mathematics because of their numbering system, Roman numerals. Because each Roman numeral was more of a "formula" than a "place holder" number. As a deficient numbering system, Roman numerals did not "promote" higher math.
" ... [What] made Roman numerals so inferior was that each number lacked specific numeric positioning, making each number more of an equation than a single integer. The added layer of complexity prevented people from doing higher math. (ibid. Frey, Thomas) ... "
Unfortunately, in our cataloging society, we are today, like the Romans, too deeply immersed in our systems:
" ... Most of these systems we take for granted – systems for weights and measurement, accounting, banking, procurement, traffic management, and food labeling. With each of these systems we are much like the Romans, immersed in the use of these systems to a point where we seldom step back and question the reasoning and logic behind them. ... "
Universities traditionally are the "conveyors of wisdom and culture from generation to generation." Human intelligence, still not fully understood, might be genetically passed on from parent to child -- but memory of how we became intelligent must be relearned by each child. Memory is not passed on genetically in humans.

However, Universities are "about to find out" that our digital revolution with its "counterparts in education" will outdistance the pedantic task of passing on wisdom and culture.
" ... College 2.0 will witness a massive peeling apart process. Learning will become separated from the classroom. Courses will be created organically and formed around an on-demand, any-time, any-place delivery models. Professors will declare their independence and work for multiple institutions rather than just one specific college. Accreditation will shift from the Institution to the course and to the individual. And textbooks, the ink-on-paper version that we know today, will all but disappear. (Frey, thomas. ibid.) ... "
What MooPig Wisdom wants to pass on to its reader is that you don't have to wait for this to be perfected. Stay at home higher learning is here already, and effective as a source of educational advancement. It doesn't hurt to go ahead and enjoy the cost advantages of digital learning today; especially since it is how things are going to be. Just like libraries, music, newspapers, and broadcasters, Universities adapt to the digital era.
" ... An August 2009 study released by SRI International for the U.S. Dept of Education concluded that “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.” (ibid. Frey Thomas. [NY Times]) ... "
Meeting in classrooms, instead of driving to and from a location while supporting oneself, can be done online virtually. Room and board is no longer an added cost factor in educational pursuits.
" ... For colleges to survive and thrive, the coming years will find them searching for higher ground. Their struggle will be to transition themselves beyond regional objectives, political boundaries, and short-term thinking. ... "
" ... Cultural shifts: The perceived value is a core component of a college’s reputation, and that reputation is being continually re-defined in online communities.

  • 81% of Americans age 18 and over use the Internet. (Harris Poll)
  • On average, 245 million word-of-mouth conversations occur in the U.S. daily via e-mail, IM/text messaging or chat rooms/blogs, and 35% of advice givers in online conversations fall within the 13 to 17 age bracket. (Keller Fay Group)
  • 64% of college student Internet users consider word of mouth the most useful type of advertising. (Alloy Media + Marketing)
  • Many of the top attributes that teenagers value in a brand — community, collaboration, co-creation, empathy, real story and meaning — relate to authenticity. (ibid. Frey T. [Ypulse]) ... "
SUMMARY
" ... The problem is that as online education becomes more pervasive, universities can no longer primarily be in the business of transmitting technical knowledge. Online offerings from distant, star professors will just be too efficient. As Ben Nelson of Minerva University points out, a school cannot charge students $40,000 and then turn around and offer them online courses that they can get free or nearly free. That business model simply does not work. (DAVID BROOKS. Published: April 4, 2013. LINK) ... "

MooPig's Home School :: "The Alternatives"

Working Stiffs At Age 15 | Blogs | Industrial Maintenance and Plant Operations:

'via Blog this'

Here's my deal about this education conundrum. The bottle neck is the workforce. Without a prepared and capable workforce there is no industry. And, 300 million Americans in the Service or Entertainment Industries is afoul of everything we as a nation stand for.
EXCERPT | " ... The issue here is the lack of knowledge and experience of a high school student. Students are not equipped to choose a career at age 15. Just 7 years earlier, they probably wanted to be a doctor, teacher, firefighter, mail man, and astronaut all at once, while becoming a rockstar in their free time. My interests have had many different ebbs and flows since my days in high school, and I’m sure yours have too. A broad exposure to subject areas and the challenges within them is incredibly important in both high school and college, so why pick a profession at 15? ... "
I suggest you get rid of Middle Schools as they are organized today, and make them all into farms. You put a 14 year old on a farm and he or she will get the most liberal arts schooling known to this earth. Then you implement apprenticeships in those schools so that by the time the student is in decision mode later in high school, he has some experience in industry. SCREW the system, it sucks so bad it resembles a Hoover.

Besides how is anyone going to afford all those Services and Entertainments that a leisure-tronic society so desperately holds on to? We need workers who are unafraid, and privy to what it takes to "work." Education is the key to an internal lock mechanism in each boy and girl. If not properly turned, that key can lock up a person for his entire life.
