MooPig Parenting Trap Department :: "What I Say..."

In the Beginning there were no Creations called Parents ...
Retrieved articles by Pat Darnell  |  Dec 28, 2013  |  Bryan TX

[Picture LINK] Pelletier was taken to Boston Children’s Hospital when she got the flu in February. Her parents said doctors at the hospital accused them of medical child abuse – something they vehemently oppose.

The 7 Worst Things You Can Say To Your Child: "Parenting can be so damn stressful. Kids push boundaries and buttons, and it’s a parent’s job to stay calm and steady in the face of it all. But most of us don’t perform this job with absolute perfection. We sometimes and say things to our kids we wish we could stuff back inside our mouths. I’m sure most of us have some cringe-worthy moments to mull over and make up for" (REBECCA ODES | June 30th, 2011. LINK) ..."

Kind-patience, long-suffering, friendly-courtesy, calm-serenity, soft-skills, might not be part of a person's vocabulary before he or she becomes a parent.

The conditioning one receives from perilous parenting supplants all previous learned curricula. One cannot escape a child's adolescence, and the parent usually ends up unable to forgive oneself for all the battles that came out of that "special" time. Action speaks louder than words; at least that is what we thought. Our words are remembered, and remembered, and repeated, for generations.

This linked article gives us at least seven examples of things we say as we resort to incivility in our conversations with our children:
  1. "If you don't stop that I'm going to leave you here"
  2. "Why can't you be more like your sister or brother?"
  3. "You're the reason we got divorced."
  4. "Because I said so, that's why."
  5. "Here, let me do that for you."
  6. "You should be ashamed of yourself."
  7. "We never wanted you anyway."
I'm GUILTY of most of these. YIKES!

MooPig Report from the Middle :: "The Almost Dog"

Robert David Darnell
by Pat Darnell  |  Dec 27, 2013  |  Bryan TX

[Picture by Desiree Darnell] Christmas Day, Dad with our dog Foos, "Where's the new puppy, Grandpaw?"

It has been cool this month. That is how we describe the weather when it is 70 highs and 45 lows, in Houston.

"I don't think we are going to get any freeze this year," says Robert Darnell, my 91 year old Dad.

Since Mom passed away last April, Dad is alone much of the day. He has a home health care helper, Treena, come in from 1 PM to 6 PM every day to help him in his routine. We dropped in on him for Christmas Day. Dropped in as in brought the kids, the dog, and lots of food. Dad eats like a bird.
[Picture LINK]
He said he lost 20 pounds since his last year's physical, now weighing in at 145. He goes to the VA Hospital on 2002 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, in the Michael DeBakey VA Medical Center. Dad wears hearing aids in both ears since his hearing faltered. It was determined he lost much of his hearing ability during WWII when he was on a Destroyer in the Pacific. "Our guns pounding the Japanese during Okinawa, pop, pop, when Kamikazers were trying to sink us ..." Dad says.

Two days before Christmas Dad's home health helper drove him down to Pet Rescue. He thought he might try a small dog to keep him company. So he and Treena mulled over the group of pups in the shelter, and settled on a terrier. Another family thought they might like this pup too. But Dad did the paper work, and adoption process and took his new puppy home.

Treena and Dad showed her the back yard where she would do her business. They played with her in the house.

For the rest of the day the puppy sat calmly in his lap, and followed Dad around the house. Dad uses a rolling walker to get around. He has had a bum knee since he wrenched it a few years back. The VA told him it would take a knee replacement to fix it. But he decided after watching Mom go through that, that he would forego that surgery, "because he is too ole," and has settled for monthly shots that ease his knee.

"What kind of dog is she?" I asked Dad on the phone when I called to tell him we would be there
Christmas Day.

"She's a mixture Terrier," said Dad.

Everything went okay, Treena left for the day, leaving Dad with his new Pup. Around dusk the puppy followed her instincts, and got very riled and boisterous as she heard someone walking outside in the street. Dad puttered over to the front door and opened it. His new puppy tore out of the house and got on the heels of one of Dad's neighbors. It was a nightmare for Dad, because of his impaired hearing, and he has to go pretty slow with his walker on the uneven ground outside.

Dad had to go all the way out to in the street and try to get the puppy back in the house. With his neighbor's help some how they meticulously got the puppy to calm down and go back in Dad's house.

Dad continued his evening routine and eventually went to bed.

When he woke up he discovered several piles of doggy doo around the house. Things were looking bad for Dad's new companion. Dad of course, can't stoop like he used to, and he can't clean like he used to. So, when Treena returned in the afternoon, they took the puppy back to the shelter for the other family who also wanted her.

That's our Report from the Middle; where the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and the children are all above average.

A Eulogy for Mom

Some of you know Jerre Jean Hynds Darnell as your coworker. Others know her as your party planner. Some know her as their dance partner. The board of Directors knew her as that fastidious worker. You might have caught her style as she walked the runway at the Country Place style show. Maybe you see her in her yard. You might see her praying with her church circle. Many know her as your top secret confidante. Many, many know her as that ravishing beauty. I don't often use the word ravishing, but in Mom's case she is.

But you see, Jerre Jean Hynds Darnell is my Mother!

She bore me, she named me with her heart of hearts husband, and she raised me.

My brother and sisters know of what I speak.

Most important to me is that Mom always speaks the truth. Jerre Darnell always tells the truth. That is her way. The truth isn't always the most popular thing we want to hear. Sometimes when she said those truths, it would make me want to run and hide. And she always stuck to her guns. If you fidgeted, she tells you to sit tight. If you tried to pull her away from her important task, she tells you to hold your horses.

When conversations become nonsensical, Mom relies on her maternal wisdom. Her truth statements have become pearls in her children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's lives. Mom's wisdom, you see, comes back to her.

Mom and her steadfast friend, Robert, are blessed with long lives, 67 years of which they have been husband and wife.

What is Mother --
what is Mother,
without her house
and her child?

Her babies are born
and grown in her domicile

Many houses
Mom has known
Many seeds she has sown,

Where she settled
she made it her own.

As years gathered numbers
some ideals are put to rest
her children, now with children,
are wiser, never alone, at best,
for Mother journeys with us ...

See all their bright little faces
Hear their falsetto voices,
... full of trust, truth, and whim,
Creating such a din.

Thank you all for coming.

MooPig Trend Spotter :: "Triple Threat Fashion"

Victoria's Secret, Orlando Bloom, Miranda Kerr all in one Post
Names dropped by Pat Darnell  |  Apr 11, 2013  |  Bryan TX

1. Miranda Kerr

Miranda Kerr Leaving Victoria's Secret - Business Insider: "It's possible that Kerr, 30, simply became too hot for Victoria's Secret. The brand goes out of its way to hire models whom its customers can relate to, and the stunning wife of actor Orlando Bloom might not fit the bill."

2. Orlando Bloom and Miranda ...
'via Blog this'

" ... Once Orlie' met Ma and Pa Kerr, Bloom perked up, and, as they were leaving, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor was seen giving Kerr's mum a big hug. Awww. Wonder if Orly will be in L.A. with Miranda next week? She's doing promotional appearances for Victoria's Secret, including the launch of a fragrance, Heavenly Kiss, at Eva Longoria's new restaurant, Beso, on May 6, 2008 (Elizabeth Snead April 28, 2008 LINK) ... "

  3. Victoria's Secret ...Shhhhhh

MooPig's Dry, Moist, Liquor-by-the-Drink County Report :: "Zeeland's Vitale's Pizza"

Retrieved by Pat Darnell | July 9, 2011 | Bryan TX

Zeeland approves expansion plans for Vitale's Pizza | MLive.com

"... Said Ryan Snyder, who co-owns the pizzeria with his wife, Maria... "Business has grown since Vitale’s began serving alcohol in November 2007, one year after voters rescinded a long-standing ban on such sales within the city limits. While it has contributed to the growth, alcohol sales account for no more than 30 percent of the pizzeria’s sales, he said." Vitale's is in the Batts Plaza, 59 W. Washington Ave, in Zeeland, MI -- formerly a dry township.
In Michigan -- " ... Hudsonville voted to allow alcohol sales on November 6, 2007, ending its run as the last dry city in Michigan. Hudsonville's vote follows the precedent of voters in both Zeeland, and Allendale Charter Township, choosing to overturn their bans on alcohol sales to adults age 21 and older in recent years. ("City chooses booze to spark growth". Muskegon Chronicle (Muskegon, MI). November 7, 2007. Retrieved July 9, 2011) ...."
What does it mean a dry county where there is a ban on alcohol?
[...LISTS...]

EXCERPT  |  " ... A dry county is one whose government forbids the sale of alcoholic beverages in some form. There are hundreds of dry counties across the United States. About 18,000,000 people live in the 10% of the area of the US that is dry. (Hanson, David J, PhD. 1997 - 2007. [LINK] Dry Counties)

" ... Following the repeal of national Prohibition in 1933, a large proportion of the population continued to support prohibition. Some states chose to maintain their own prohibition and others permitted local jurisdictions (especially counties) to decide whether or not to continue prohibition within their borders. The latter is called local option. (ibid. LINK)
For instance:
" ... Of Texas' 254 counties, 74 are completely dry and many of the rest are moist. The patchwork of laws can be confusing, even to residents. In some counties, only 4 percent beer is legal. In others, beverages that are 14 percent or less alcohol are legal. In some "dry" areas, you can get a mixed drink by paying to join a "private club," and in some "wet" areas you still need a club membership to get liquor-by-the-drink, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. (ibid) ... "
SUMMARY
Liquor licence to sell to aged 21 adults or over boosts sales in small Mom2Pop business in Zeeland, Michigan.

One Year AGO :: Labor Day '08 at Mom and Dad's

Labor Day 2009 is on Monday, the 7th of September. In the United States, Labor Day is always celebrated on the first Monday in September.

This is a collage made possible using Picasa 3. Try it. If you have a Google Blogger going, Picasa picks up all your published photos, art and graphics. It stores all of them and makes them available for future review, edit or deletion. What a deal for a total cost of ... zero.

The only cost is in obsessive compulsion of going back all the time and spending hours playing with Picasa 3.
