Philosophy and Philm: Federico Fellini - Amarcord

Jean-François Lyotard (1924 - 1998)
"Paganism rejects any universal criteria for judgement, yet Lyotard claims that we must judge, that justice demands this of us. So how do we judge, without criteria? Lyotard invokes both Kant and Nietzsche in his answer. In Kantian terms, we judge through the constitutive imagination. For Kant, this ability to judge, and to invent criteria, is mysterious, and there is little we can say about it. In Nietzschean terms, Lyotard says that judgement is an expression of the will to power. It is perhaps misleading of Lyotard to say that paganism is judgement without criteria; for it is judgement only without universal criteria. What he is denying is the possibility of a discourse that will give us adequate criteria for judgement in each and every case."

Instead, what we must do (as pagans) is meet every circumstance that requires judgement anew, and create criteria specific to that case by an affirmative act of the imaginative will. Thus we will get a plurality of criteria, a plurality of judgements, a plurality of justices. In this sense, paganism can be thought of as a plurality of rules of judgement (gods), as opposed to belief in just one rule or set of rules (God). Somewhat paradoxically, perhaps (as Lyotard himself admits), the justice of this pluralism is assured by a prescriptive of universal value - the prescriptive that the rules of individual language games be respected; that they are not subsumed under a single criterion of judgement.

I don't buy the god=rules assumption. My camera has fuzzy-logic, why can't my deity?

J:
So nice to see your friendly letter over here. I found that every attempt at universal truth starts with assumptions. Here the assumption is infallible God, thus universal rule.
I was reading this modern philosopher to find a sort of reasoning behind "why it is so hard for usually rational 20th century people to talk about, say, pollution... or music, or even love... as if these are subjects to avoid.
I stumbled right here as you have to the fuzzy-lens vignette... and that is why I cut and pasted it for later references.
Thanks for your very perfect comment. It makes my day less fuzzy. >>warmest regards, Patrick

Maybe my true problem lies within the genrefication of "infallible God"...maybe some pickles are too big to fit in a barrel.

Faith in food is like faith in the unseen God. Most food, pickles, won't hurt me; God won't hurt me. Let me see if I'm on track with you...

I stand-by waiting for friends to inspire me with revelation or, better yet, rid me of unfounded fright, all the while my children continue to grow and question, edify and come up with new questions...

So, guess what? God becomes infallible when I need it for straightening out my kids.

But when I am alone, wonderment takes lead, and I am no more positive than anyone else. I am less likely to initiate judgment as "affirmative act of the imaginative will."

Genrefication of God as "infallible" God is a limitation after all, isn't it? And I am bound by faith to seek eternal. So you are very wise to say some pickles are too big to fit in the barrel... is God the Pickle, or the barrel?

My fourteen year old daughter just two days ago asked me if we have any Pagans in our family: you see she gave me authority to establish this fact, or, no fact before her next growth spurt. The week before was a question about virginity.

I thought it over and told her "yes, there have been several pagans, along with many Methodists in the family."

You see, as reluctant authority, I always avoid confrontation, judgment, or dogma, unless it is that one perplexing criterion: infallibility. It is stumbling block added to my blindness, ..said the blind carpenter as he picked up the hammer and saw.

I think now I might tell her the Pagan relatives are the pickles outside our barrel of regular family activities. Not good or bad, just not fitting in the barrel.

That's all I have for now.
