Researchers Link Earthquakes In Texas To Fracking Process | ThinkProgress: EXCERPT | "... The researchers examined the group of more than 50 earthquakes that hit the area of Cleburne, Texas in 2009 and 2010, and found that they could have happened because of waste-water injection wells associated with fracking operations.
"Before 2008, the Fort Worth Basin of Texas had never experienced an earthquake.
“Because there were no known previous earthquakes, and the located events were close to the two injection wells and near the injection depth, the possibility exists that earthquakes may be related to fluid injection,” the authors write in their report. ..."

TRANSCRIPT
0:01SCHINDLER: I would say the biggest thing people should have learned from the Japanese nuclear
0:10accident is that for rare events that are catastrophic the tendency of politicians to
0:22go to risk based management is folly. Risk based management works well if you're calculating
0:32car crashes and the probability of getting in one. Things where you have a big database
0:38and lots of events in a big variety of things. For things that happen very very rarely so
0:47that you can't really calculate the probability - just to give you a number astronomically
0:53low and that would be for a tsunami or a nuclear power plant failure. Well, how is it then,
1:01that when you think the probability on a risk-base is of a tsunami causing 6 nuclear plants to
1:09fail...and then if that doesn't blow your mind enough, the calculation of a risk of
1:16a deepwater oilspill is astronomically low. And that happened just a few months later.
1:23So the message is: There are things that are important enough that you don't tolerate any
1:31risk. You have to have data to work with to generate reliable risk estimates and it just
1:39doesn't work for rare or catastrophic events. And that's something that we as a society
1:46need to know because we have politicians who want to see these risk calculations on everything
1:52and if they're below a certain threshold, you know, go with the in doubt one. The precautionary
2:00principle has been lost.
2:02SUZUKI: We're always being told these technologies are foolproof but what is a foolproof technology?
2:08It's a technology free of fools. And who hasn't been at some point gone to a party and gotten
2:13hammered and you come in hungover the next day, or got a cold and didn't want to lose
2:18a days wages so you come in, or fallen in love and lost 50 IQ points. I mean, lots of
2:29things makes us fools and you can't anticipate the fool. How a real life fool -and
2:35technology. But, you know, I make a point of not accepting invitations to be on organizations
2:39- foreign organizations - because I'm focused just in Canada, but last year I did accept
2:44one international invitation to be part of: Japan's Renewable Energy Foundation. It was
2:49set up after Fukushima. Fukushima is the most terrifying situation I can imagine. You asked,
2:58"What can we do?" First of all you have got to get a government that isn't in total collusion
3:04with techno...the energy companies. They're lying through their teeth. 3 out of the 4
3:14plants were destroyed in the earthquake and in the tsunami. The 4th one has been so badly
3:22damaged that the fear is: if there's another earthquake of a 7 or above that thing then
3:31will go and then all hell breaks loose. And the probability of a 7 or above earthquake
3:36in the next 3 years is over 95%. Now what they've got in there is 1300 rods of spent
3:43fuel that have to be kept in water all the time. And they have no way of getting it out
3:49and, you know, they're pouring water in and that water's leaking out and now they've got
3:53this cockamamie scheme of trying to freeze the soil so the (unintelligible) flows in
3:58- well - they don't know what to do and the thing we need is to get an international group
4:04of experts to go in with complete freedom to do what they suggest and right now the
4:10Japanese government has too much pride to admit that. I have seen a paper which says
4:17that, if, in fact, the 4th plant goes under an earthquake and those rods are exposed it's
4:25bye bye Japan and everybody on the West Coast of North America should evacuate. If
4:34that isn't terrifying I don't know what is.
CONCLUSION
Collusion and misinformation of and by Japan [and possibly the rest of the world] has stymied work on the clean up of the Fukushima nuclear plants. From other sources we find the cleanup will take thirty years. If it is that long, when it's done this author will be 88 years old.

Japan Hit By 7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Off Fukushima Prefecture Coast, Tsunami Advisory Issued: "TOKYO -- TOKYO (AP) — An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 struck Saturday morning off Japan's east coast, near the crippled Fukushima nuclear site, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Japan's emergency agencies declared a tsunami warning for the area.
The quake hit at 3:10 a.m. Saturday Tokyo time (1310 GMT), the USGS said. The tremor was felt in Tokyo, some 300 miles (480 kilometers) away. Japan's Meteorological Agency raised the tsunami warning for the area of Honshu. But the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not post warnings for the rest of the Pacific."

MEANWHILE ...
More apparent tsunami debris washes up on U.S. shore - CBS News: "The dock was spotted Tuesday by the Coast Guard on Washington state's rugged Olympic Peninsula. The site is about five miles from the nearest road. On Thursday, a swollen stream blocked the debris team from reaching the dock.
The Washington dock is believed to be similar to the 165-ton concrete and steel dock that washed ashore at Newport. Looking like a railroad boxcar, it was 66 feet long, 19 feet wide and 7 feet high. A plaque identified it as one of four owned by Aomori Prefecture that broke loose from the port of Misawa during the tsunami." [Pictures LINK]

Organizations Helping Out
Don't be a Drive-By Rubber-necker
by Pat Darnell | Jan 13, 2013 | Bryan TX
If you can send the word out that yesterday was the three year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti, it is appreciated. Maybe folks who were able to donate in 2010 will ask the right questions of the leadership in Haiti and in the USA. MooPig has published numerous articles on Haiti disaster, and that is its contribution. We were shocked to realize there is still almost a 100,000 people living in squalor, in tent cities in Port au Prince, after three years.
Below you will find web sites of organizations that provide relief for disasters all over the world.

Haitian homeless feel abandoned years after quake | News24: ""We have been abandoned by the authorities. January 12 will be the anniversary of three years of suffering, misery and contempt ..."
'via Blog this'
January 12, 2013 will mark three years of misery, tragedy, and homelessness for 358,000 people in rough tent cities and camps around Port au Prince. During those three years refugee Haitians have been exposed to "crime wave, a cholera outbreak and - from time to time - hurricanes." Haitians wonder when there will be relief for them.
"We have been abandoned by the authorities. January 12 will be the anniversary of three years of suffering, misery and contempt," he spat.
For now the refugees get a wreath and rhetoric:

And, last but not least, Sean Penn has worked at organizing relief for Haiti:

During those three years refugee Haitians have been exposed to "crime wave, a cholera outbreak and - from time to time - hurricanes." Haitians wonder when there will be relief for them.
" ... The 2010 disaster triggered a global outpouring of sympathetic rhetoric and pledges of aid for the already impoverished Caribbean nation, but residents and aid agencies complain that rebuilding and re-development has been too slow. (SAPA. 2013-01-11 12:30. HERE) ... ""We are without support," complained Wisly Decimus, a former teacher who has given up trying to run classes in a tent in the Marassa camp, just outside the capital, where 5,000 people cling to life beside a dangerous river.
"We have been abandoned by the authorities. January 12 will be the anniversary of three years of suffering, misery and contempt," he spat.
Three years ago on January 13th, 2010 this story made the news:
" ... Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who previously traveled to Haiti to lend their star power to musician Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti Foundation, said they were “devastated” by the tragic news.
“We are devastated by the news from Haiti,” the duo said in a statement to The Agence France-Presse. “We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter.”(by NBC Universal, Jan 13, 2010. HERE) ... "
For now the refugees get a wreath and rhetoric:
" ... In the late morning, Clinton, the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, joined Martelly and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe in placing a wreath at a mass burial site north of the capital of Port-au-Prince. None of the three spoke at the event.Side note: " ... Foreign diplomats and Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova, earlier named by Martelly as one of Haiti's goodwill ambassadors, were also there. ... "
Clinton expressed hope about Haiti's future in brief comments to reporters after the ceremony.
"I think that you will see, particularly in the economic sphere, a lot more in the coming year, where Haiti is projected to have the highest growth rate in the Caribbean," he said. "Well, we hope to speed up some of the infrastructure. We have to repair the agriculture and ... build a lot more houses. We've got to get those people out of those tents."
Clinton, Martelly and Lamothe met privately in the afternoon. (TRENTON DANIEL
ASSOCIATED PRESS. Saturday, 01.12.13. HERE) ..."
[Picture LINK]
And, last but not least, Sean Penn has worked at organizing relief for Haiti:
" ... Sean Penn has spent the last two years helping the relief effort in Haiti, and he's got little time for those who have long abandoned the country.[Picture LINK]
"It's not only celebrities who went for a day," Penn said at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday when asked about the lack of support for the Haitian relief effort. "It's the whole f--king world. It's all of you."
Following the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in January of 2010, Penn headed to the country and helped set up J/P Haitian Relief Organization, an aid group that rebuilt homes, schools and hospitals. For his efforts, Penn was awarded with the 2012 Peace Summit Award by the Nobel Peace Prize laureates, and also became an ambassador-at-large for the country.
"He was not a drive-by celebrity," former President Bill Clinton said recently. "He went into those camps and he was actually solving their water problems, solving their sanitation problems." (Christopher Rosen. Posted: 05/18/2012 1:08 pm Updated: 05/18/2012 1:44 pm. HERE) ... "

MooPig Reconstruction Review :: "Haiti after Three Years"
The NYT won't like me snagging this Slide Show... but ...

I have seen both sides of human survival now. I have seen the Mitt Romney nouveau riche bunch, where nouveau riche describes rich people who acquired their wealth within their own generations ... the equivalent English term is the new rich; ... and I might have seen some of the worst poverty stricken masses.
Whenever I traveled I tried to at least see what is going on in the community I stayed. In Mexico I stayed with my family in a pretty nice hotel, but from the window I could see naked children running and playing soccer in the woods behind the building. If I opened the window they would run up and ask for money.
In Osaka, Japan, I saw no poverty. Associates there took me to the "bad parts" of town, and it looked like "One Mag Mile" of Chicago. In Chicago, I would walk on one side of a street, like Lake Shore Drive, and it was swank high-rise apartment/condo -- while just across the street was high urban density bric-a-brac ...
Here in Haiti, after so much western countries pledging billions to reconstruct post earthquake conditions, there are many projects not even started after three years.
Here in Bryan Texas, the Lutherans threw up a solid brick, buttressed hexagonal, 'cathedral' church in just a few months. Now it sits on a busy road, with its moving message sign flickering about its services. I am a skeptic, because a good builder a minister does not make. Maybe the wrong people are in charge over there in Haiti?
This, the Haiti earthquake aftermath, is a carbuncle on the face of humanity, that such boastful pledging goes without follow up. Eh? We don't like bombast, for an other-wise great cause, here at MooPig Enterprises. We scorn it.

Nearly three years after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, uncleared rubble and ruined buildings remain in downtown Port-au-Prince. Vegetable vendors worked amid the debris.
A vegetable vendor sold her goods on top of piles of earthquake rubble in downtown Port-au-Prince.
Agricultural crops like corn and millet are being grown and harvested in the vacant lots left behind after destroyed buildings were cleared away in the capital.

A woman used piles of earthquake rubble as a platform to sell toys in a market.
A man offered a knife-sharpening service amid the ruins and garbage of destroyed buildings in Port-au-Prince.
This thick tangle of iron rebar is all that remains of the shattered National Palace that was finally demolished earlier this year.
A boy rested on the edge of a construction site in Cabaret, outside Port-au-Prince. The American government had promised to complete 156 houses there, but earlier this month only about a dozen had been completed, and they lacked doors and windows.
Long rows of homes in the Zoranje development outside Port-au-Prince. It is the only big, new housing project completed and occupied, but the houses are still not connected to water.
Women bring buckets of water back to their homes in the new Zoranje development.
In the mountain town of Furcy, Haiti, some 480 students cram into two small, makeshift schools planted in the heart of a construction site for their new school. Construction was halted on this and 20 other school sites when inspectors discovered construction error and design flaws indicating they would not be safe during earthquakes.
While construction on their new school is stalled, students attended classes in a makeshift structure without electricity.
Sixth-graders in their temporary classroom, lighted only by the natural light that seeps through the gaps between partial walls and tin roofs.
A partly demolished section of the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince that is still being used as a holding area for patients being prepped for surgery. A $70 million reconstruction of the hospital by the American, French and Haitian governments, announced in September 2010, has yet to begin.
The emergency room of a newly finished teaching hospital in Mirebalais, outside the disaster zone. The hospital, built by the nonprofit Partners in Health, which plans to run it jointly with the Haitian government, has not yet secured its first-year operating budget.
Dieudonne Zidor, a local elected leader who represents the Campeche neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. “As you can see, conditions are calamitous,’’ she said.
Nadain Janvier, 29, repaired a leaking roof with tarp material on his makeshift home in the Campeche neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. Mr. Janvier has lived here since his home on this site was destroyed almost three years ago in the earthquake.
Charles Frantz, 46, and his family live in the Campeche neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, a jumble of tents, half-destroyed buildings and makeshift shacks. Campeche has been the focus of millions of dollars in reconstruction aid but has seen little progress.
Makeshift tents along the signature steep, red-dirt roadway of the Tapis Rouge (Red Carpet) camp in the Campeche neighborhood.

Quake Expert Says Dual Quakes In Colorado And East Coast Unrelated | FoxNews.com
Published August 23, 2011 | Associated Press
GOLDEN, Colo.-- The U.S. Geological Survey says the Virginia earthquake struck an area that historically is not seismically active -- and that there's no connection with another rare quake that struck Colorado.
USGS geophysicist Daniel McNamara in Golden, Colo., said Tuesday's magnitude-5.9 quake that rattled much of the East Coast cannot be traced to a specific fault.
McNamara said the same applies to a magnitude-5.3 quake that struck southern Colorado late Monday. That area, too, has seen little seismic activity on such a large scale.
Famous Last Words::
"McNamara stressed there is no connection between the two quakes."

WHoop whoop whoopp :: "Earthquake Warning"
Why do I Keep Hearing "Experts" say This:
by Pat Darnell
by Pat Darnell
As this report concludes, that as of yet, "no firmly reliable" method for predicting earthquakes has been scientifically recognized, it is well worth noting the too many to be ignored anomalous coincidences leading up to catastrophic mega-quakes are breaking out all over the World and should only be ignored at ones peril. In other words, it is always best to be prepared should disaster strike, wherever the warning comes from.

Haiti, Six Months After the Earthquake
July 12 marked the six-month anniversary of the devastating earthquake here in Haiti that killed as many as 300,000 people and left much of the country in ruins. Up to 1.8 million people are living in squalid tent cities, with inadequate sanitation, if any, no electricity and little security, or any respite from the intense heat and the worsening rains.
" ... AMY GOODMAN: This is Democracy Now!, democracynow.org, The War and Peace Report. I’m Amy Goodman. We’re broadcasting from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Six months ago today, one of the worst natural catastrophes in the world took place, the earthquake here in Haiti. We go now to Camp Corail right near a killing field, a dumping ground for bodies years ago during the coup, but now, right next to Camp Corail, one of the refugee camps. We’ll hear from Haitians in the camps. ... "Wednesday, July 14, 2010

The Haitian camps are congested beyond imagination, with ramshackle tents standing edge to edge in every square foot of available space. With the rainy season now beginning, the crowded conditions and overtaxed public toilets have raised very real concerns about a cholera epidemic.
The tents themselves are a hodgepodge. Families' first attempts at fashioning shelters have been augmented with plastic sheeting supplied by international agencies. But the makeshift housing certainly won't withstand a hurricane. If one were to hit Port-au-Prince, the death toll can only be guessed at. There would be nowhere for displaced families to take refuge in a city where most of the hotels, public buildings, schools and churches still lie in massive heaps of rubble.
It's to be expected that cleaning up the rubble will take time. But what is shocking is that it hasn't really started. In four days of driving through this sprawling, heavily populated city recently, I saw only one backhoe in operation. It was repairing a sewer line. The other handful of modest cleanup efforts I saw were being done by teams of a dozen people with shovels and wheelbarrows, tools pitifully inadequate to the task.
Massive, aggressive intervention is required. It will take a convoy of construction equipment, such as that possessed by the U.S. military camped on the edge of the city, to remove the rubble and clear streets that are clogged with piles of concrete and iron. But the cleanup is just not happening.
Why has so little been accomplished? Why hasn't heavy equipment been brought in? Why hasn't the government depopulated at least some of the worst camps, moving residents to safer locations on the outskirts of the city where proper settlements can be planned, and proper shelters constructed?

" ... MIAMI - The first Atlantic hurricane of the year has strengthened to a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of near 100 mph as it plows ahead toward a collision with the Mexican Gulf coast and south Texas.
The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Alex will make landfall in northeastern Mexico sometime Wednesday night.
The storm is far from the Gulf oil spill, but cleanup vessels were sidelined by the hurricane's ripple effects. Six-foot waves churned up by the hurricane splattered beaches in Louisiana, Alabama and Florida with oil and tar balls.
Hurricane Alex flooded roads and forced thousands of people to evacuate fishing villages.
The eye was about 55 miles northeast of La Pesca, Mexico, and about 105 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. ..." (ap, 2010.06.30, hurricane alex)

Why NOT name Earthquakes like we do Hurricanes?
[SOURCE] | " ... An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck southern Mexico early Wednesday, the US seismological authority USGS reported on its website.
A 49-year-old man from San Andres Hauxpaltepec was killed when the ceiling of his house fell onto him, a civil defence official told The German Press Agency dpa.
The quake, which struck the Oaxaca region some 350 kilometres south of Mexico City at about 2:20 am (0720 GMT), had little other effect, local officials said.
Numerous buildings were evacuated in the wake of the 30-second quake. Power was lost in some regions, but communication networks remained intact - in contrast to earlier earthquakes in Mexico.
The epicentre of Wednesday's quake was located at a depth of 20 kilometres, according to the USGS. ... " (Wed, 30 Jun 2010 20:43:51 GMT. By : dpa. Category : Nature Environment) ... "
