American Troops Draw-down

Future of Flight

Maria, Cantiamo -- you got a mouse in your pocket?

[SOURCE]
George Herriman (1880 - 1944)
Lately I resumed my tease with graphics, and have posted some poli-toons ... I wondered myself 'Why now; why this genre?' Then I ran across this article from the LA Times last Sunday. Could I be semi-channeling Dead Cartoonists? ... although not in league, nor class, of those passed; no, no.

" ... [A]pparently the shy cartoonist was working under the delusion that he was appealing to children as well. Editors knew better, often complaining to Hearst: "they don't get it." ... "

The L A Times reports this weekend on the work of " ... George Joseph Herriman [who] was born in 1880 in New Orleans but grew up in a neighborhood south of downtown Los Angeles near Washington Boulevard and Main Street.
... It was Hearst alone who ensured Herriman's livelihood. The Chief, as he was called, had a good eye, and he liked what he liked. From 1913 to 1944, the strip appeared in a select handful of Hearst newspapers, often running in the arts and culture section."
... George was "self-depracating" and shy. Some say it is because he felt a bit disposed about his looks. He was heard saying once: ""Any fella with a face like that should keep it a secret from the public, and I can't see how you're going to get any circulation publishing mushes like that!" Not sure if it feigned modesty or just depicts the way of LA's recluse comic, but it effectively portrayed his life's work -- "Krazy Kat.""

Please read the article yourself; [Entire Article HERE] -- it is a study in the art form least understood by the public. Herriman's toon captured the eye of heavy weights in an era that saw two world wars and a Depression. The article concludes:
"Be not harsh with 'Krazy,' " Herriman once wrote. "He is but a shadow himself, caught in the web of this mortal skein." And almost a hundred years later, his equally mortal patron, "Citizen Hearst," will be remembered for protecting a bizarre comic strip that almost no one liked: burlesques of a lovesick cat, unknowingly tormented by a disagreeable, tiny, stick-legged mouse.

Issuing PINK Slips to Federal Government Employees

The FAX: " ... to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

YOU ARE BEING PUT ON NOTICE
 HERE IS YOUR PINK SLIP!
AFTER REVIEWING RECENT VOTING RECORDS, WE HAVE FOUND IT NECESSARY TO DOWNSIZE GOVERNMENT.
Your superiors have reviewed all the hired hands in the Senate and the House of Representatives. Our review discovered many of our elected employees operating outside of their job descriptions and without authorization.

During the interview throughout the last election all job candidates promised to perform in accordance with their employer’s written instructions, also known as the U.S. Constitution. However, it has become painfully apparent that your terms of employment were never followed and your job performance is at an all time low.

Furthermore, it has been brought to the attention of your employer that you have engaged in flagrant violations of the Peoples instructions (aka the U.S. Constitution). Reference employer’s handbook: Articles 1 through 7 and Amendments 1 through 27.

Upper management has little choice but to take appropriate actions by un-electing, otherwise known as termination of employment, of those who refused to follow the employer’s instructions in 2010 and 2012. LIST OF FLAGRANT VIOLATIONS  [X] - Voting for National Health-Care against the will of your employer. These actions alone could bankrupt your employer.

[X] - Voting for Cap and Trade against the expressed wishes and direct instructions of your employer.
[X] - Endorsing dangerous security practices by promoting unguarded and unprotected borders, thereby jeopardizing Employer's livelihood, personal security and the continuation of domestic tranquility.
[X] - Creating a dangerous American work environment by funding Wall Street Fat Cats and Mortgage Moguls while ignoring America's largest employer, small business.
[X] - Restricting firearm sales, thereby increasing the risk of loss by the employer. The employer has given explicit instructions regarding firearms, yet direct violation of the Second Amendment "Right To Bear Arms" have been witnessed.

For Violations - Please reference, employer’s handbook. (U.S.C. September 17th 1787)

If you have been involved in any of these violations of the employer’s handbook (U.S. Constitution) or willfully ignored the expressed wishes of your employer, the People, then your services are no longer needed and you will be unelected in 2010, and others in 2012.

Definition of terms: Un-Election means: "You can KISS WASHINGTON GOODBYE, and We The People will send you home to Mama."

RECONSIDERATION: However, because of the great and gracious history of your Employer, We The People are willing to reconsider your previous actions if it is witnessed your attitude improves and you labor on behalf of your employer’ best interest, show an honest effort to reverse the damage done by yourself and fellow employees and not be in violation of the We The People’s Handbook, the U.S. Constitution.

Practical Compliance Strategies

All jobs today have stress; how do you know when stress has reached the level of a disability? How can you (and should you) accommodate a mental illness? And what do you dare say to an employee when you "think" there's a problem? (Warning: The first question your employes's attorney will ask is: "Are you a trained psychologist?")

Mental health and stress claims are on the rise nationally, and your workplace isn't immune. Mental impairments are tricky to spot and very difficult to manage. Can you even ask someone if they have a mental problem? Just by asking aren't you "regarding" them as a person with a disability?

The ADA complicates every situation, and the FMLA and workers' comp aren't far behind. And, by the way, neither are the lawyers.

Nearly 60 million Americans experience a mental health impairment annually, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health, and a lot of those people work. Just as one example, since the mid-1990s, the number of individuals seeking treatment annually for depression in the United States has doubled to 27 million.

And employers have paid out millions for discrimination claims based on depression-related conditions, alcoholism, anxiety disorders, and other psychological disorders.

Mental disabilities, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, aren't always easy to spot; thus, employers with 15 or more employees nationwide have an increased burden concerning the interactive process under the ADA. And, with the expansion of the definition of "disability" in 2009, even more individuals with mental disabilities are covered by the ADA. Should you engage in the interactive process when you're not even sure that a mental condition constitutes a protected disability under the new Act?

Join us on August 30 for an in-depth, 90-minute, interactive webinar all about how to manage stress and mental disability-related claims. Our expert-a seasoned labor and employment attorney-will use case studies, hypotheticals, and checklists to provide you with the tools you need to identify, assess, and manage these tricky situations.

You'll Learn:
  • The types of conditions that are currently leading to stress and mental disability claims
  • How to approach an employee who might be suffering from a mental condition
  • How to tell if a mental condition qualifies as a "serious health condition" under the FMLA
  • How to tell if a leave of absence is a reasonable accommodation, including sample medical questionnaire language you can put into practice
  • The difference between general stress and anxiety and an ADA-protected mental condition
  • How to evaluate whether stress or pressure is part of an employee's essential job functions
  • Practical steps you should take if stress appears to be the result of the work environment so you can minimize your organization's exposure to workers' comp claims
  • The key questions a workers' comp judge is likely to ask to determine whether a worker's stress is a compensable work-related injury

Remembering Katrina

Don't 'Sperse Me Bro!, by Tracie Washington [SOURCE]
[EXCERPT]   " ... Is it me, or does it seem like every time the people of Louisiana are imperiled by a disaster, the Feds’ “fix” is dispersants? I think we have a dispersants problem.

Hear me out. Remember Katrina?

The Feds sprayed charter school dispersants on and dismantled our public schools system, and expected that would make failing schools and undereducated kids disappear.

The Feds sprayed affordable housing dispersants on and demolished our public housing, and expected that would make dilapidated housing and concentrated poverty disappear.

The Feds sprayed private care dispersants on and shuttered our pubic hospital, and expected that would make indigent healthcare disappear.

Now, the Feds have sprayed chemical dispersants on and further contaminated our gulf waters, and expect that will make the oil spill disappear.

Hmmm...let’s see: We still have failed schools and undereducated kids and, because of the charter-school dispersants, we now have a juvenile crime crisis. We still have dilapidated housing and concentrated poverty and, because of the affordable housing dispersants, we now have a homeless population crisis. We still have second-rate healthcare and, because of your healthcare dispersants, we’ve lost our regional public hospital.

We still have an oil problem in the gulf and, because of the chemical dispersants, we now have a looming public health crisis.

Hey, Feds – NEWS FLASH: There is no magical elixir for the man-made problems that ail us. No matter how much you spray, these problems don’t disappear, they simply resurface, with unintended consequences.

So don’t ‘sperse me, bro! Ask us folks directly affected by these problems how to solve them. Hell, we can’t do worse than DOE, HUD, DHH, or EPA/BP. Seriously. (POSTED BY JORDAN FLAHERTY AT 2:52 PM [Read Entire Article HERE]) ... "

Let's Play "Mosque -- No Mosque"

Jayne d'Arcy says:
August 26, 2010 at 2:13 pm
I just want to say that I’m tired of this Ground Zero Mosque nonsense. One – it’s NOT a mosque. It is a community center for the ENTIRE community, Muslims and non-Muslims. How many Mosques do you know have basketball courts, restaurants, and a swimming pool. If that’s how they are all built, I’m goin’! Two – the owners that want to build it are wish to improve inter-faith relations. Three – there will be a prayer center in the community center for Muslim members so that they may pray according to their religion. Three – it is being built two blocks from Ground Zero, NOT at Ground Zero.

Last I heard, this is America. Our Founding Fathers came here because their own religious freedoms were being trod upon. Just because some dumb nut targeted us doesn’t mean that ALL Muslims are terrorists.

Get a grip people.

The specter of Kennedy's lingers still on the wind of Democrat Presidents:
" ... President Barack Obama has been in hard-core "no drama" form. He and his family have eschewed the island's ritzy restaurants and its swirling social scene, instead mostly staying close to home at the 30-acre farm they're renting. ... "
" ... Still, this trip seems to be starting off on a lower key than last year's, when the president and first lady dined out on their third night in town. But it's a difficult comparison to make because outside events, especially the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., intervened last year. Plus, it was Obama's first vacation here as president. [SOURCE] ... "

Style of Prez BHO Vacationing
" ... Local papers have run stories on the lower level of buzz surrounding this year's visit, but there's still plenty of excitement on display. Signs welcoming Obama dot the island, including this good-natured warning from one local household: "Welcome Obama. Watch out for ticks."

Cafes and shops have named ice cream and drinks after the president. Patrons at Mocha Mott's coffee shop can enjoy a "Mocha/Bama" - mocha with milk and white chocolate.

But Vineyard residents have taken note of the president's low-key style. It stands in particular contrast to that of former President Bill Clinton, who was a fixture of the island's political and literary social scene in six summers here during his presidency. (AP Associated Press reporters Mark S. Smith and Glen Johnson contributed to this report from Vineyard Haven, Mass.) ... "

Announcing the Pakistan Relief Fund
Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State, Washington, DC, August 19, 2010

US State Department WebSite reports: [Excerpt SOURCE]
From a transcript ....
" ... “Currently more than 20 million Pakistanis have been affected by the worst natural disaster in Pakistan’s history. That is more than the population of New York State. The enormity of this crisis is hard to fathom, the rain continues to fall, and the extent of the devastation is still difficult to gauge.

" ... The United States has and continues to take swift action to help. But governments cannot be alone in helping the people of Pakistan.

“That is why the United States Government through the Department of State has established the Pakistan Relief Fund for all Americans to join in this tremendous relief, recovery and reconstruction effort.

“The pictures we see coming out of Pakistan are painful images of human suffering at its worst. In surveying the lives and landscape affected by this disaster, we see brothers and sisters; mothers and fathers; daughters and sons. We see 20 million members of the human family in desperate need of help. This is a defining moment – not only for Pakistan, but for all of us. ... "

Officials: U.S. drones kill 6 militants in Pakistan
Updated 6h 2m ago  [Excerpt SOURCE]
MIR ALI, Pakistan (AP) — Suspected U.S. missiles fired from an unmanned drone killed six militants Saturday in a Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border, officials said.
Missiles struck two vehicles in Anghar Kala village near Miran Shah in North Waziristan — the second such attack since massive floods hit Pakistan in late July. The officials said some of the dead militants may be foreigners.
The tribal region is a haven for various Islamist militant groups. The main organization operating there is the Haqqani network, which focuses on attacking U.S. and NATO troops across border in Afghanistan.

"It is divisive and disrespectful to build a mosque next to the site where 3,000 innocent people were murdered at the hands of Islamic extremism," said Florida GOP Senate candidate Marco Rubio.

September 11: Portraits of Grief
Three days after the September 11 attacks, reporters at The New York Times, armed with stacks of the homemade missing-persons fliers that were papering the city, began dialing the numbers on the fliers, interviewing friends and relatives of the missing and writing brief portraits, or sketches, of their lives.

The portraits were never meant to be obituaries in any traditional sense. They were brief, informal and impressionistic, often centered on a single story or idiosyncratic detail. They were not intended to recount a person's résumé, but rather to give a snapshot of each victim's personality, of a life lived. And they were democratic; executive vice presidents and battalion chiefs appeared alongside food handlers and janitors. Each profile was roughly 200 words. In the weeks that followed the attacks, amid nonstop news coverage of the disaster and the war, reading "Portraits of Grief" became a ritual for people nationwide.

Dec. 31, 2001 brought the final daily edition of Portraits of Grief, but additional profiles will be published from time to time. All profiles will remain on NYTimes.com indefinitely. Read more about the project.

Excerpt from Foreword in the book edition PORTRAITS: 9/11/01 -- "Portraits of Grief"
" ... I [Howell Raines speaking] have seen reporters crying at their telephones, even as they summoned the professional discipline to keep reporting, keep writing until the task was done. They were inspired and sometimes driven by awareness of what these pieces had come to mean to the grieving families and friends and to that larger community of Americans who mourned for all the World Trade Center victims, strangers to them or not, just as in an earlier day their parents mourned for the dead of Pearl Harbor. We received thousands of letters and emails from our readers. ... "

MooPig Site Review :: "PC Magazine Tells All -- Only Four Big PLayers, Y'all!"

Retrieved for Ed Porpoises by Pat Darnell

Unless the government steps in, we'll see what the wireless carriers want us to see.
Google's deal with Verizon to give up on wireless net neutrality shows that the phone carriers want to have an absolute lock over the way the mobile Internet will run. And unless the government steps in, they'll run it for their benefit, not yours.
There's a ton of commentary on the Net about the Google/Verizon position on net neutrality, but let's just focus on wireless: basically, the two companies said that the wireless Internet is what carriers say it is. Carriers should be free to speed up, slow down or block any traffic they want. Implied in that, floating in its penumbra, is the desired right to lock phones, block applications, or install un-deletable bloatware on your phone.
This is a far cry from the utopian dream Google's Erick Tseng described to me back in January. The Google Nexus One Android phone, he said, was the beginning of a new era for U.S. wireless. You'd soon be able to get a Nexus One from any carrier, he said, and even switch them between carriers. Google would provide a retail channel to challenge the carriers. (For more on this see my column, "Nexus One: Google's First Step?") Android was freedom!

Google Acknowledges That Verizon Owns Your Internet

By: Sascha Segan
  • 08.11.2010
That was nonsense. Google realized it was more profitable to play along with the wireless carriers than annoy them, so they never really marketed the Nexus One and only sold a handful of phones. The announced Sprint and Verizon versions of the phones never appeared, and Google killed the whole project after less than a year. Meanwhile, Android is becoming every wireless carrier's operating system of choice for smartphones, largely because of its flexibility in creating completely carrier-customized phones. Tseng has left the company, and there will be no Nexus Two.
The wireless industry likes to say there's plenty of competition out there, and the four big players are cutthroat on some things - for instance, they're building 3G and 4G networks like maniacs. Problems arise when they start agreeing on things that aren't customer-friendly and acting like a cartel. As a consumer, I see that danger in fees for "preferential access" to their networks.

The Myth of the Unlocked iPhone
Yes, the Copyright Office recently said that you can unlock or jailbreak your phone, but that's a smokescreen, because the Copyright Office didn't say carriers have to support those phones. You could find yourself with a happily unlocked phone that no carrier will activate.

Once again, the specter of the iPhone floats in the air here, but in a slightly different way than it did in December 2009 when I said that "Google is not the messiah." Way back in 2007 when Apple introduced the iPhone, pundits speculated that Apple might start their own wireless carrier to show the industry how things should be done. They didn't - they signed a perfectly conventional contract with ATandT.

Yeah, yeah, sure, Google (or Apple) could have entered into a wholesale contract with a 3G provider to offer service under their own name, but don't fault them for not doing that. No wireless reseller has made money in U.S., because the spectrum-owning carriers structure the contracts to prevent wholesale customers from skimming off their most profitable users.

Because there are no requirements for reasonably-priced 3G roaming or wholesale contracts, companies like Apple, Google, and my "10 Small Carriers With Great Phones" can't jump into the national scene and challenge the big boys, and the big boys like it that way.

The biggest threat to the major wireless carriers' business models comes from mid-sized spectrum owners like Cricket, who last week declared a $55/month smartphone service plan. Since Cricket owns their own network, they're not beholden to the bigger guys. But even Cricket is now potentially in danger; to go national, they signed a wholesale agreement with Sprint that could potentially let Sprint turn the screws on them down the road.

Starting to Feel Marginalized?
Cricket is a renegade on pricing, but they stick with the party line in terms of freedom. They control your access to the Internet. Like all wireless carriers, they say they're doing that to protect their network from predatory users who might download more than Cricket is comfortable with. I don't want to single out Cricket, of course - everyone does this.

There are reasonable traffic concerns involved. Carriers seem to be spreading the idea that their networks are horribly fragile, gossamer things ready to collapse at any minute under the load of desperate Internet users. That's why Verizon overpriced the Microsoft Kin into oblivion and why ATandT has been lowering their data caps.

I think that after six years I can tell the difference between greed and fear, and the whole data-cap thing looks like fear. They're not price-gouging as much as they're just trying to keep their pathetically overburdened networks from collapsing. It's a sad statement about the inability of these companies to provide the Internet capacity Americans demand.

Epilogue
But there's a world of differences between purely traffic-related restrictions and content or hardware-related ones. The Google/Verizon proposal reserves to Verizon the right to define what gets to be seen on the Internet, who we can see it through, and for how much. If we want any kind of wireless freedom, we can't look to the carriers; the FCC has to step in.

In humans, parasites called sporozoites travel to the liver, where they mature and release another form, merozoites. These enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells. [SOURCE]
A majority of symptoms are caused by massive release of merozoites into the bloodstream ... anemia result[s] from destruction of red blood cells, and problems caused by large amounts of free hemoglobin released into circulation after red blood cells rupture.

[Malaria] is a major health problem in much of tropics and subtropics. CDC estimates that there are 300-500 million cases of malaria each year, and more than 1 million people die. It presents a major disease hazard for travelers to warm climates.
Most people living in areas where malaria is common have acquired some immunity to malaria disease. Symptoms are High fevers, shaking chills, flu-like symptoms, and anemia.

Visitors will not have immunity, and should take preventive medications. It is important to see your health care provider well before your trip, because treatment may begin 2 weeks before travel to prone to malaria areas, and continue for a month after you leave the areas. The types of anti-malarial medications prescribed will depend on the area you visit.

According to the CDC, travelers to South America, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Asia, and the South Pacific should take one of the following drugs: mefloquine, doxycycline, choroquine, hydroxychoroquine, or Malarone.

Falciparum malaria is becoming increasingly resistant to anti-malarial medications.

Persons are urged to " ... Call your health care provider if you develop fever and headache after visiting the tropics.  ..."

The Gates Foundation has poured about $1.2 billion into malaria research since 2000. In the late 1990s, as little as $84 million a year was spent - largely by the U.S. military and health institutes, along with European governments and foundations. Drug makers had largely abandoned the field. China was developing a drug, artemisinin, that is now the cornerstone of treatment. [SOURCE]

The WHO, World Health Organization, is a United Nations agency with a $4 billion budget. [Source: Atlas Editions; Civil War Cards] Surgeons from both sides of the Civil War called malaria "ague","shakes", or "intermittent fever", the illness accounted for 20 percent of all sickness during the war. A typical case of malaria started with shivers down the spine, then fluctuating fevers for days. According to clinical records, doctors used a variety of treatments for malaria, but whiskey and quinine were standard treatment.

Some Yankee patients were given so much quinine that their teeth became loose and they were not able to eat.

When drugs became scarce in the South, doctors substituted tonics made from whiskey mixed with barks of dogwood, tulip and willow trees.

During the Civil War people believed malaria was caused by poisonous vapors emanating from ponds and swamps. While many men noted in their diaries swarms of mosquitoes that attacked during warmer months, and ensuing sickness that enveloped the camp, they never put the two together.
